I'm just curious. I think it is very strange that all the clarinets player hold their instruments at the same angle. The video shows us the clarinets are on line, like soldiers march. Is it very common for the German orchestra or Karajan's style? I can find that the flutes are the same fashion.
The music is very beautiful, so I don't care what I mentioned. But, I was just feel strange.
@ikeday Those shots are not taken during the performances. They are taken during playbacks and during playbacks so that the players can stay on the same line.
Check : Karajan - Beauty as I see it / Die Schönheit wie ich sie sehe (Part 6) [1.30] &
Karajan - Maestro for the Screen / Filmstar Karajan, (Part 4) especially is important but I recommend you to watch the whole doc. anyway.
@ikeday Let me add that in his videos for Unitel and Telemondial all, I mean all, wind and percussion parts and some string parts are re-shots. Exceptions are those New Year or All Souls Day concerts. Rest is, how to say, a kind of fabricated images.
What about von Karajan? We are listening to Tchaikovsky, right? So please, leave all the negative out of this section and spoil the music all together, please.
A child of St. Petersburg, my dear Tchaikovsky being, please let him be all honour, will you, please?
@gustopheles I didn't watch the whole perfomance... the ending of the 3rd mvt. Only speaking about the 3rd mvt., the problem started at 3:25 and it went downhill from there. I don't know if it was an actualy mistake on his part, or just poor interpretation of his pattern by the orchestra. Believe me, Karajan was a great conductor, however there were many times in other performances that I've seen where the orchestra had trouble interpreting his conducting. This was not uncommon
@lajtinga Maybe if he actually led his orchestra better, he wouldn't have had problems like those. And no, this was not the only occasion that he messed up. I have nothing against him, for he was great at telling the orchestra exactly what he wanted, but he butchered that 3rd mvt. He disserviced Tchaikovsky.
@conductorforlife95 hey, at what time in the video did he mess up? I like Karajan very much, and I'm wondering what to watch out for in this performance.
The CHANNEL Berlin Philarmonic notices sent ywo in my account letting my channel in bad condition for i have posted a symphony 7 and 9 COMPLETE with Karajan conduction ,
if they do not have this material not cet others because i´m puttig you send this to say they blocked me and that's how they return the love from fans
it did not money but by the love of music , THEYDID THIS WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE
@isaachill87 Yes he's not like Leonard Bernstein when it comes to showing emotion on stage. But his genius lies in his rehearsal time - just listen to his recordings, & its obvious that there's something different about his style. His sound primarily, is probably the silkiest and thickect you'll ever hear. There's a video on YouTube of him in a rehearsal of Schumann's 4th Symphony - have a look at it - it's brilliant. :)
@isaachill87 Wow. This comment as absolutely floored me. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth my time to explain as to why what you just said is probably one of the most incorrect and blatantly wrong things in the world of orchestral music.
You might find it 'boring', but most people who actually know what they're talking about with music like this find it the opposite.
That being said, this concert was at a time when Karajan was in his decline. Old age and health problems tend to do that.
As an individual who has a Masters' degree in music and first heard this symphony as an undergraduate over 30+ years ago it has always been my favorite orchestral work of all-time. The sheer passion and emotion as composed by maestro Tchaikovsky has always taken my breath away. Thank you for this exquisite performance by probably the greatest orchestra on planet Earth - the Vienna Philharmonic!
I once saw a performance of this symphony where the conductor played the 4th movement attacca to the end of the 3rd - almost like that opening B minor 6 chord was an immediate chastening of the triumphant ending G major chord. It was devastatingly effective.
This is a gorgeous performance - keep in mind that many of the close-ups were done after the show as re-takes, then edited in. This explains the strange case of the timpani being next to the trumpets in one shot, then the trombones in another, or the flutes disappearing from the winds when the bassoons are playing, and vice-versa. However they did it, it's very well done.
This movement can power a sizable city. And it's not even finished.People still clap thinking it's the finale.Mr Tchaikovsky always kept us on our feet.
Ingres never heard Tchaikovsky. If he had ,the man may have scrapped Mozart.I suspect he would have gave the master a portrait..or two.Peter you the man!
Art is a nexus. When one approaches Peter that person must be prepared for critique.Herb knows his Tchaikovski.Just think a German orchestra giving us Russian music?? These are great times to be alive.
What is that very reedy/buzzing instrument near the end of the symphony? Bass clarinet? Bassoon? It sounds so beautiful.
