Ben was kind of the guy who was always playing the cards in his own favor and doesn't care about many others. He is always planning and knows everything. I think Ben may have been claimed in the temple whe'n Richard took him, so that's why he is so calm and kills people a lot. Also when he says, "You're the one who got to stay after school with Ms. Hawking," shows that he is jealous of Jack who got to talk to someone important, like Locke could see Jacob.
