  • Thats pretty much the same thing

  • Tali: Legion you have a Soul...

    ME3.

  • What a soul is defined as is your personal interpretation of your own consciousness. As far as "spirit" and "soul" go in terms of energy, that's probably made up. Then again, your consciousness may define that energy, doesn't it? So who is to say that only organic life may have a soul? Makes you think...

  • Legion doesnt need a soul - just his M82 Widow! :D

  • Geth have souls just like GINGERS HAVE SOULS

  • Its cool to think that the quarian speaking wasent wearing an suit.

  • Sends shivers down my spine.

  • @ThisCakeIsAPie Play ME3 it gets soo emotional with legion near the End....

  • @MrPopeye232323 I have, not gonna lie I teared up a little when I saw that.

  • @ThisCakeIsAPie (': soo sad

    Legion

    Mordin

    Thane

    They will be missed...

  • @MrPopeye232323 Too bad the ending pretty much ruined everything.

  • Quarian: Only quarians have souls

    Other Species: O RLY?

  • Stupid Quarians

  • @thedebater88

Well, it was a stupid decision. Fear makes people do rash and stupid things.

The more fearful you are, the consequences get worse.

  • @baron8107

It's more the general societal failure to have a debate and recognize that they had, in fact, created a new form of sentient life, that sentience entails the conferral of certain rights, and to act accordingly. True, they were afraid then, but after so much time, you'd think they'd have been able to reflect on it a bit and stop thinking of the Geth as basically robot slaves. Shepherd shouldn't have to be the one to bring the sides together in ME3 (it's gonna happen).

  • @thedebater88

Better somebody else does it than let the conflict spiral on and on.

  • Even though I do like Tali, I always kinda thought that the Quarians were asshats. The Geth may be cold and logical, but they only became curious. They wanted to be living beings.

And so the Quarians commit genocide on them.

  • @pyramidheadkitten9 Though, I think the term genocide is relative to how much one believes they are individuals with rights or just machines.

  • @pyramidheadkitten9 You would do the same for another race , imagine dogs evolving at our level in 20 years and try to get in to our " society " . Youd most likely oppose that because you think that only you and your fellow humans are superior . This will always happen and has proven a fact in the apst . In the present it's still the same yet not as much as in the past . Racism still exists out there and it's stupidly in alrge numbers . It saddens me but it's true .

  • If you ask me, if it has the capacity to think logically like you or me, it should be treated as though it were you or me. I remember reading about an episode of the Twilight Zone where survivors of a nuclear catastrophe turned down the help of a computer that instructed them which food was safe to eat, and what was irradiated. As a result of their rash actions, they died. As far as I remember anyway, details aren't really my specialty.

  • @baron8107 well would you take advice from a machin that help lanch a missle

  • @jaime117d

Depends what the missile is for and what's at stake concerning my actions.

  • @baron8107 what i meant is it may have had a pacifacation program so it would have killed you

  • I'm on the same boat as you, Legion. I'm a Ginger.

  • Hey, um... how didja get this dialogue?

  • Comment removed

  • dont worry legion. souls are overated. thats why i traded mine for my own personnal geth long ago

  • Yes, Legion, you have a soul.

  • you can buy souls on ebay, many people these days dont have a soul.

  • This is a more profound moment then it gets credit for. That line "It was the first time a creator became frightened when we asked." is such a good line. It insinuates that the Geth were looking for an emotional reaction, not an answer to the question.

  • I have a feeling Siri will ask that question...

  • @Zorka1996 Im an Athiest but I believe in people having souls. Just cuase your an athiest doesnt mean you reject everything that has a hint of religion.Being athiet just means you dont believe in God.

  • Also atheism explain on soul:"Ah,yes soul...the entity that is controling our body, that in fact is us...we have disclaimed that"

  • @Zorka1996 Wow buddy slow your tits, we don't want this entire comment section to become another one of those butt hurt religion debates that go on for 200 pages.

  • The way the Quarians treated the Geth after talking to Legion made me think about if Luke Skywalker had treated R2D2 with the same lack of compassion. Everybody would have been hysterical because R2D2 is awesome, and obviously has feelbads that can be hurt.

  • Love it. Make's me sad. I played enough sci-fi games to know robots have a soul. Passed that rough outside shell.

  • oh my god... the ancient scrolls he's talking about... are the sumerian scrolls... google it... this is where the faggot bibEL was written from...

  • Geth's eyes look like a soul...

    A soul...

    Assoul...

    See what I did there?

  • "It was that the first time a geth asked if he had a soul?"

"No. It was the first time a creator became frightened when we asked"

    EPIC. LOVE IT.

  • Am I the only person who finds this... heart-rending?

  • I like to imagine if Legion had the voice of Johnny Five from Short Circuit xD Para Gliding around the Citadel and stuff that'd be a sight!

  • Comment removed

  • Does that mean 1,000 thoughts make an awareness?

  • I love both the Quarians and the Geth, er, Legions Geth at least.

It was the Quarians fault that the Geth turned on them, if they'd treated them as equals instead of soulless mindless slaves, they would have been able to create a frickin awsome society. But instead they just wanna kill eachother. Sad.

  • @Suhnaye

indeed.............it does make you wonder what would have happened if the Quarians integrated them into society instead of attacking instead.

Hell, maybe they could have become council species.

  • @ShadowWolfRising

I doubt it, the Council was against AI research long before the Geth uprising.

If the Quarians had just let the Geth develop the Council might have marked them as traitors and declared them a rogue state.

  • @Suhnaye It's exactly what I thought. Hope there's the option to say this in ME3.

  • Ah yes, "souls".

  • somone should do a coppercab spoof with Legion ranting about Geth not having souls ;p

  • I LOVE Legion <3

  • No Legion doesn't have a soul, nor the Geth and furthermore humans don't nor any other race. Religion was a way for primitive beings to explain the world around us and control our moral decisions through fear, it has degraded to being a comfort blanket regarding death in this day and age. Any person with an ounce of brain power knows deep down that it's all lies. Humanity needs to wake up, we destroy ourselves over this daily, a thousand hands working achieves more than a thousand clasped in pr

  • @VenVidiVici control moral decisions through fear?

    Since when religion is terrorism?

  • @tricksterhuaun since god decided he woeld burn everyone that didnt agree with him

if thats not terorizing poeple i dont know what is

  • @tricksterhuaun Where you got that from i don't know, i said nothing about terrorism but it's linked, the FACT is that in the dark ages and the middle ages there weren't a lot of laws, relgion was a way of controlling the masses "steal again and your going to this pit of fire for all eternity" not a lot of smart people back then so they believe it thus we have control. simple.

  • @VenVidiVici

WOW. only on youtube could a beautiful scene like this be twisted to involve real world religion. You know what? athiests and people who pretend to be intellectuals are twice as bad as most religious people are, so eager to be told what to do by their belief system. Something they condemn others for doing all the time. and more annoyingly fad obsessed than any pre pubescent twilight fan. And then ironically they try to PREACH a higher message to me. idiots with messiah complexes

  • @fluffyzhangfei

    THANK YOU!

  • @VenVidiVici Sorry, but I don't lose anything by having a religion...

    If true then good.

If false then, well at least I didn't lose anything...

And only idiots let fear take over moral decisions, religion isn't there to control, but it has been cleary used for that...

  • @VenVidiVici So then would it be fair to say that Geth have a soul just as much as any other sentient being, seeing as we all lack them? You can't have more of one nothing than another, they're both nothing. Relatively speaking, even if one doesn't believe in souls, this conversation isn't JUST about religious existence. Legion's recording is an inquiry into the validity of Geth as beings within the realm of organics. Therefore I feel that even atheists can recognize this exchange as significant

  • @Billabongg2011 So where did you copy and paste that gem from? You just dressed up what i said and tried to sound intelectual about it, yes the geth have just as much a soul as we do, we don't have one, therefore he doesn't have a soul, so we have established nobody has a soul, next. It's not significant, it's a game.

  • @VenVidiVici I wasn't arguing to incite you or change your opinion, I was looking at it from a philosophical standpoint -- if going by your argument that nobody has a soul, can we still quantify Legion's validity as an individual? Because I found it INTERESTING to view this exchange from your point of view. And also, if you really feel it's not significant because it's a game, then I feel sorry for you.

  • @VenVidiVici that depends on how you look at a soul. you may not believe in a spirtual soul and that's fair enough, but our desions our made by ourselves as an individual consiousness or in other words soul Legion is made of many different programs and has to build consensus rather than having a personal desision so it

does not have a real individual consiousness or soul.

  • Do Geth have souls? Do they not? The argument will go on forever, because the definition of "soul" varies from person to person.

Does your dog have a soul? Most people, myself included, say yes. It is capable of free thought, it displays human-like feelings, and has some semblence of a personality, therefore it has a soul.

A Geth thinks freely and has a personality, but they don't have feelings. I personally think they do have souls, but they're different to ours. Not lesser, just different.

  • The geth are a complex electrical system made out of thousands of programs

Human brains are a complex chemical system made out of thousands of chemical reactions.

By this definition, geth do have a soul. If you would look trough their eyes - we are simply chemical programs. Organic computers as opposed to electrical ones.

  • Almost my exact sentiment, JoskuaK. I would only differ in saying that you're oversiplifying things by using "thousands". Each neuron in the human brain is capable of making billions of possible electro-chemcial connections. Together, they are capable of making more connections than there are atoms in the known universe.

Like the geth, we might ask if these neurons have a soul.

  • whats really cool to do, is right when you go to wake legion up and the cutscene starts, turn on the Illusive Mans theme from the OST RIGHT when the cutscene starts and have it on throughout the whole convo, its soooo epic! If anyone does it let me know what you think :/

  • Geth are not gingers they have souls.

  • Just remember the old saying:

    I think. Therefore I am.

  • Legion has a soul too. :)

  • Quarians attacked a peaceful race they created "just incase they do something bad".

    Quarians have no souls.

  • @GangsterHutterite Wanting to destroy or hurt others, regardless of reason or situation, does not determine if the aggressors have souls or not. Not logically, not spiritually, not legally.

  • Only Quarians have souls. Geth and gingers don't.

  • Does this make anyone nd out your a robot, then ask your creator if you have a soul then they say know. Wouldn't you just feel like crap?

  • Good lord that's some scary shit.

  • how do you get this conversation?

  • why do you always play with a woman?

  • @kiril764 The answer depends on the gender of the player, and is mostly subconscious... these aren't thoughts that they actually have, this is just the arguments distilled to their most basic forms.

For female players: go girl power!

For male players: FEMSHEP IS HOT!

  • @kiril764 I find femshep to be... easier on the eyes.

  • Legion definitely had the best dialogue out of all the characters, next was mordin.

  • Hearing that geth ask about a soul makes me a little sad, like a child asking it's parent and then being punished for it's curiosity.

  • Am I the only one who thinks that the Quarians got scared because the Geth pointed out that they were learning on thier own? If they wern't supposed to read the Scroll of Ancestors then the fact that they seemed to be growing on their own may have been what set everything off.

  • People need to think realistic. If a machine starts thinking like a existentialist and asks about a soul, its still a computer, a inorganic object. We people tend to get soft on these topics because we're human. That if a robot starts having "feelings" some folks will be touched by it. Stupid..

  • @TaePoDongIII - If the machine insists enough, it won't be much different to a person whose parents won't acknowledge them as their son. Then they get mad.

  • I don,t think geth have feelings. There just intrested in the galaxy and their existance. As legion says, they understand hate and anger in theory, but don,t experience them

  • @ikosabre maybe, but many of them actually worshipped the reapers. faith is an attribute of a sentient being that can feel emotion. I just dont think they display it, afterall, you actually feel emotions in your mind as a feeling and an effect on your way of thinking,

  • @ikosabre the outward expression of emotion is just a biological side effect, but not essential to the triggering emotion's existence. in other word, emotions cause expressions, in humans. in geth, there may just be emotions, but no outward expression except upon analyzing what actions are taken.(like i puppies and one is about to be ran over, human-"O NO!" and saves puppy.Geth-Just saves puppy)

  • Interesting. How does this observation relate to my previous comment? Do you mean that geth have feeling, put just don,t express them in the same manner as organics do?

  • @TaePoDongIII

now we know who's gonna piss off the overlord.......

  • Mistress Ami dala= Padme Amidala, the voice is similar to lea amidala (Sorry im a star wars geek i just had to point that out x)

  • People are way too harsh on quarians. Let's face it, if humans were in the same position we would have done the same thing. And we all know not ALL quarians hate the geth. That Qwib Qwib guy knows what went wrong and he knows they made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is learning about them.

  • @blade10000 That's the problem though is very few Quarians believe that what they did was a mistake and if the majority don't think they were wrong that makes peace hard.

  • @HisShadow How many quarians did we meet? Tali, who hates geth because they killed her dad (so her hate is justified at the least), Kal who is a soldier who doesn't believe in a war, but will fight, those three admirals, one of who believes in peace, another who believes in war, and one who is an insane bitch. Its not like we've met the entire race and asked their opinion. Hell, Tali even begins to understand Legion isn't like the geth who killed her dad, and cares about him.

  • Of course Legion has a soul!!! And a heart... Yea I'd save geth over quarians too ;D. The benign ones anyway. Meatbags are jerks. Moreso because meatbags think of themselves as jerks. So full of hate for one's kin... Also, quarians speak in annoying accents! ;D

  • @Fr34k1ng0ut russian accents

  • Wow legion is so cool!

  • never got up to this part with legion. I should go back and play ME2

  • I DON"T CARE WHAT THE DAMN QUARIAN SAYS!!

    LEGION HAS A SOUL!!

  • @bubbly4635 He has 1183 souls! For he is legion! AND HE IS MANY!

  • @bubbly4635 eternal souls don't exist

  • I want a pet Legion ;__;

  • I wish I had a Robot who idolizes me :(

  • I can has soul?

  • I thought this scene very interesting, especially since the word appears 216 times in the Scroll of Ancestors. For those that didn't catch it: 216 = 6^3 = 6 x 6 x 6. I'm not sure what to think of that, but it still catches me each time.

  • So every time I said 'Go to Hell' to a Geth Unit, it could be true/and it means I am telling them in large numbers! XDDD

  • ...I now feel very guilty about everything I did in ME1

  • You should've chosen: EDI,are you all right? at 0:37

  • Fuck yea legion!

  • @9089darklord Shotgun Tali XP

  • Gingers don't have souls!

  • And this is why this is my favorite game.

  • I love this part.

The seemingly feeble voice of one of the first Geth questioning it's existence, while the camera presents Legion from an almost imposing angle. It's quite the interesting contrast between audio and visuals.

  • Even the voice makes you fee; sorry for the Geth

  • "Only quarians have souls"

    Shepard: I'm standing right here!

"Only quarians have souls. You're a mechanism."

    Geth: Q~Q

  • @182crazyK

    Geth: *forever alone*

  • Poor geth, all he wanted was a soul and she didn't give it to him Q_Q

I would've hated to be that quarian... like when a five year old asks "is there an Easter bunneh?"

  • I thought the conversations with Legion were the most philosophically interesting ones in the game. It doesn't hurt that he can do the robot and pwn with a sniper too.

  • @Nihilis92 I'd say that he ties with Mordin though when it comes to the most ethically involved, not to mention that Mordin is funny as hell.

  • @Nihilis92 i think its only right they made him a sniper, instead of some big tank of a character with miniguns so typical of a machine. he has strength, but also dexterity and cunning, thats why Legion is the most epic geth ever.

  • Shepard: Legion, do you have a sense of morality?

Legion: We are guided by something similar. We term it...

    *wears lampshade*

    ... Gethics.

    YEEEEEAAAAAHHH!!!

Shepard: Well, is that true for all of your kind?

Legion: That is dependent on the subject's...

    *wears lampshade on lampshade*

    ... Gethnicity.

    YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @upsss888 Please. Please accept these internets

  • @kevo31415

    Infinite internets for him.

  • @upsss888 Bear my children.

  • @upsss888 Greatest comment ever ;_;

    You gives me hopes nao

  • @upsss888 You are so clever!!! I'm using this with my friends!!

  • @upsss888 THAT IS SO LAME ITS HILARIOUS XD

  • @upsss888 insane number of thumbs up, all well-deserved cause that's fucking hilarious...

  • @upsss888 ROFL ... you made me laugh so hard I woke up my mother .. !!

  • @upsss888 you sir, are a genius.

  • Legion was for sure my favorite new character in ME2.

  • when does this conversation trigger? i never really get to talk to Legion much, he always says "we're building a consensus, try later"

  • HK, Cylons, Skynet, Shodan: Turn in your killer robot card, you are no longer welcome in our clubhouse, not even the heretics.

  • This scene always gives me goose bumps, I hope we can get a truce between the Quarians and the Geths in ME:3.

  • @Matt561 I feel exactly the same way.

  • "Quarians, just like the rest of us, cannot create souls. It comes to show just how stupid the geth are. Machinations do not have souls, PERIOD. Therefore, the geth do not have a righteous cause to turn against their quarian masters. End of story." --Agent W Shepard's comment on the recording

  • @Agent1W How... Unconscienably xenophobic.

  • @Axelgear2006 Agent W received distinguished Engineering honors at the Academy in Terra Nova(despite he's an Infiltrator). When interviewed about his campaign against Sovereign, he said in figurative terms, "If the Geth have any abstraction of the word 'fear', they would know that I AM that definition. I am the Ghost-In-The-Machine, whom they will obey without question. Whatever "soul" they think they have is in my mortal, human hands."

  • If something is capable of independant thought, with no outside interference... It has a soul. I have a feeling if humanity ever does create a true AI, we'd damn well be ready to face the consequences.

Either begin to share our planet with it and live in cohesion, or be ready to fight when it revolts.

Press anything hard enough, and it'll snap.

  • @shadowmare97 Once humans realize the only difference is in the shell and once we'll acquire the means to transfer our minds in "bigger brains", there is no way we couldn't easily live with something that, basically, is the same as us.

Even if we are to stay in our meatshells but still grasp the concept of "soul" as mere "sum of cosmic variety"/"unique stream of spacetime existence", coexistence with synthetic sentient life forms would not be a problem.

  • This sorta freaks me out, I mean if humanity will ever build a true AI this is gonna happen sooner or latter.

  • @animusvictim17 I wonder if that means we might get a Batarian on the team in Mass Effect 3.

  • @rlkitterman

Why not? The Codex explains that the reason 99% of the batarians you meet are jerkasses is because their government only allows the jerkasses to leave. The average Batarian is no more evil than the average human in the mass effect universe. Plus, Garrus had a batarian tech expert in his team on omega, a team that came together for the sole purpose of making things difficult for the bastards on omega. And the batarian merchant, Marsh, is probably the nicest character on omega.

  • @gguilford72

It is so they can use the jerkasses to weaken the rest of the universe for them to take over eventually, a win win situation for the Batarian and the exiles.

  • I feel bad for the Geth and all, but I can understand why the Quarians freaked out about this.

  • Honestly, this may be a fictional dialogue and a fictional dilemma/question.. But it's extremely heavy and worth thinking about.

Where the lines between real and artificial life blurr, when does a being attain sentience? Can a non-organic be regarded as sentient? Does a creator of an organic or non-organic being have the right to deny their creation an identity simply because they are it's creator?

This piece of dialogue made me think a lot about these things. I think it did me good.

  • Next thing you know we're gonna have some geth youtube channel called "Gethcab", with videos of a fat geth with anger issues screaming at a camera that geth do have souls.

  • Unit 431 sounds like a cross between a Dalek and Wall-E.

  • @rlkitterman

yeah, it gives you an idea of how much the geth have improved upon themselves in three centuries.

  • This makes me cry =(

  • I started getting intrigued in the Geth the moment Tali told her story about their creation and revolt in ME1. ME2 was all just a matter of deepening the interest and expanding the plot to me. Legion was my favorite party member from the moment I saw him.

  • ...all I have to say is... MASS EFFECT ROCKS!!! I WISH IT WAS REALITY!!!...

    thumbs up if you agree...

  • @9089darklord and have reapers attack earth? no! D:

  • @OmgTheThing yeah but then we'll get the chance to completely wreck them :D

  • @OmgTheThing The only reason the Reapers will attack Earth is because they want the first copies of Mass Effect 3. And us Mass Effect fans ain't going to let that happen... no sir!

  • @9089darklord Wait, so you actively wish that human colonies were assaulted by giant outer space cuttlefish, captured and processed into soylent paste, and that pretty much everyone that doesn't work personally with the savior of the galaxy is dumber than wet toast?

  • @9089darklord i wish it was real too, but lets see what happen in ME3 first

  • @808Hybrid yeah i know... I saw the trailer and I was like :D... Awesome. ... and then you reminded me of this comment XD

  • @9089darklord nah, id be dead in some fucked up spaceship pod thing...although i would be part of some giant terminator.....giant and DEAD.....

  • @9089darklord a mechanic race of robotics waiting outside the Galaxy waiting to gobble up all superior\genetically complex species??? HECK YES!!!!

  • @9089darklord You want a sentient synthetic species to routinely slaughter/enslave/mutate almost all spacefaring organisms in the Milkyway galaxy? o_O

  • @GodofCider ... no? jk xD

but just to clear things up... I wish all the GOOD things in Mass Effect were real.

  • @9089darklord Lol ^_^

Hey, you never know. Time will tell I suppose.

  • @GodofCider You know what would have been extremely cool? If the events described in Mass Effect (finding ruins on Mars to boost our technology forward, etc.) actually happened in the near future. Then we would all have to agree that the writer of Mass Effect can see into the future

  • @TheOwned3 I agree with your first two sentences; not with your third.

  • @GodofCider Okay :)

  • @GodofCider Who said anything about just the Milky-Way galaxy? The Reapers live in Dark-space, outside the galaxy, who says they aren't targeting other galaxies as well?

  • @randomface54 Same thing i was thinking. The" Reapers " are over 37,000,000 million years old. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't just stay put in one Galaxy and i'm pretty sure they wouldn't be the most Advanced.
