  • 17 people...don't like this song

  • moody moody song love it

  • This song is older than dirt.

  • @76ComicFan еще древнее :)

на самом деле это лихая пирацкая пестня. это уже переделано про сержанта, солджера и т.п.

    в оригинале капитан, sailor и т.п.

  • War = not the right solution imo..

  • Ireland is IRELAND not part of Britain. An island on our own and always will.. Play that violin....

  • If you ever feel like going to war, listen to this.

  • the weavers did it better

  • Fantastico..Bruce è il numero uno !!!

  • We shall overcome... amazing disc !!

  • Brilliant arrangement and performance from Mr Boss and pals. Only thing bothering me is how he can carry on looking younger than forty when he must be 20 yrs older than that, Good diet, good doctors, good skin cream and maybe big wealth might help, I guess...

  • @redcrowdemon Put it down to good Italian genes, my husband is the same, I am aging disgracefully while he still looks young and wrinkle free. It's all the olive oil, lol

  • I can honestly say that I'm shocked that even a mere sixteen people could dislike this. A true scar on the face of wonderful art.

  • Marvellous, bloody marvellous - is there anything this man cannot do?????

  • I lov this song!!!!!!!!

  • this is more of an anti war song than some stupid nationalistic anthem

  • god this is good

  • 16 people don't know what the touching, real music is.

  • Task master? YOU WROTE and TOLD ME that IRELAND was part of BRITAIN. It is NOT. The South Is NOT a part of Britain,. If you think it is...Why did you email ME saying it is and post it isnt on here? Make up your mind! IDIOT!

  • this scares the fuck outta me, hes incredible

  • BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS BOSS !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • its an anti was song

  • HA! Yes Its an IRISH folk song! What idiot said it was British? hahahaha! SLANTE

  • Comment removed

  • @TaskMaster619 Northern Ireland is part of UK, however the MAJORITY of Ireland is a seperate nation all together (the Republic of Ireland).

  • @TaskMaster619 Northern Ireland only.

  • @TaskMaster619 North only, gets your facts correct please.

  • @Leeder1109

If you want to be accurate about it the song is generally regarded as being derived from the Napoleonic Wars, particularly the Peninsular Campaign. So rather than call people names it might be wiser to remember that at that time Ireland , all of Ireland, was very much a part of Britain. Strictly speaking whoever called it a British song was right. And I think 'slante' normally has an 'I' in it , if you're Irish. that is ... Sláinte

  • @Dustypilgrim1 Are you a moron? How can Ireland, an island in the Atlantic, be a part of Britain, a different island in the Atlantic. Ireland was never part of Britain you fool!

  • @jarsonist

lighten up and get over yourself you pompous sod. Ireland was part of Britain upto 1921 when the Irish Free State was established by treaty after the uprising,(which , incidentally , my Grandfather fought in ).

.The mental ramblings of some dozy bugger are damn all interest to me. Wouldn't be surprised if you weren't one of those American Irish who have never been . You sound like one. Most Real irish have far better senses of humour.

  • @Dustypilgrim1 Seriously, geography and history books, read some. You might look less foolish. LOL! You accuse me of being an Irish-American, which I'm not, yet you claim some authority on Irish affairs because you're a plastic paddy! Pompous! Read some of the drivel you wrote below.

  • @jarsonist

look up Acts of Union you daft twat.. Until you have a clue what you're talking about keep it to yourself.

You might not like it, and there might be a tiny puddle between Ireland and the rest of the UK, but Ireland was once part of Britain. Do you even know what the British Isles is ?

Or did you mean England . They are different things munter.

  • @Dustypilgrim1 LOL!!! You really have no idea of geography or history. Product of the UK education system I suspect. Broken Britain as Mr Cameron said recently. Read your own post, so much fail! LOL!

  • @jarsonist

as I said ... check out what Britain refers to, and referred to Historically, because your silly argument makes as much sense as saying Hawaii or Alaska cannot be part of the USA. You really are being rather dim, and avoiding your error will not change the fact you shoved your foot in your mouth...As I said, Acts Of Union !. Stop bleating about history until you actually know some , rather than just imagining it as you may wish it to be.

  • @Dustypilgrim1 LOL! You do know that the Act of Union created the United Kingdom of Great Britain AND Ireland? Britain and the UK are completely different things and Britain and Ireland are separate geographic entities. Your ridiculous version of history is akin to saying the UK became part of France in 1973 when it joined the EEC. How can the island of Ireland be part of the island of Great Britain. Seriously, go back to school, your British education has failed you!

  • @jarsonist

in one respect you actually have a point there. . But, you still need to embrace the fact that United Kingdom is itself a contraction of United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Equally , you cannot get away from the fact that when young Ted enlisted , he did so in the British army.

I still worry that it bothers you so much. To varying degrees , within or 'beyond the Pale', right or wrong, Ireland was very much part of the British entity. It is also in English.

  • @jarsonist

bloody good song though. Do you think ?

  • @Dustypilgrim1 Hey Dusty, Ireland may have been part of Britain in there little foolish world back then but in Irish eyes it never was and never will be,, England taught they could take over the world like Pinky and the Brain but hey they got a rude awakening and rightly so. The english should have tried to look after own country instead of sticking their fat noses in to other countries. Ireland is IRELAND and yes not part of britain so forget about them foolish history books and realise reality

  • @kevin1980086

In some Irish eyes it was...

Duke of Wellington..born in Dublin I think. He and a fair few others were quite keen on being part of UK/GB.

The problem is too many people adopt some fake mantle of a modern day freedom fighter and end up sounding vaguely silly. Now watch some daft bugger say Wellington denied being Irish, then we can pretend all those daft sods who have never been there are Irish.

If Ireland hadn't been British it would have been French. Unavoidable.

  • @Dustypilgrim1 He was actually born in a place called Trim. If you ever see the movie Braveheart you will notice a castle where the king throws his sons boyfriend out the window. Wellington was born 10 minutes walk from there in County Meath.

  • @Emerald007007 ...Thanks. seen versions. Mornington House, Dublin, stated by his father, house next door had a claim laid at its door, the house has now gone. saw one claim he was born on the Dublin packet boat, family estate of Athy apparently stated by his dad on the 1851 census return, spent most of his childhood at a house in Dublin,Dangan Castle,on the Trim road in Meath. (that your one?).schooled in Trim ,and Eton.Seems odd there's so much confusion.

  • @kevin1980086 Then Britain sacrificed everything it had fighting Germany and trying to bring peace back to the world... as I recall Ireland kept quite quiet during that period of history.

  • The Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the political union of the kingdoms of England and Scotland with the Acts of Union 1707 on 1 May 1707 under Queen Anne. In 1801, under a new Act of Union, this kingdom merged with the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After the Irish War of Independence most of Ireland seceded from the Union, which then became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

  • simply awesome historical moral meaning

  • he fucked up this song sooo hard

  • youtube.com/watch?v=UKd2m1VEmi0

  • Great artist. Too bad when he has his Sting and Bono moments.

  • ein sehr geiles Lied

Greetings from Germany, sorry my english is not perfect

  • @15011990horrem Dein English ist perfekt :). Gruess aus Arizona.

  • ein sehr sehr geiler song;)

this song is very very nice.

    Greatings from Germany

  • to ri ay o didly ay to ri oh ri oh ri ay

  • @jskinnie what does it mean?

  • The bigness of ones heart is not a sign of weakness ,The bigger the information media the less courage and freedom they allow.Banning the truth will not eradicate it. Take care ADonovan43

  • its pronounced Mc GRAAAA not McGreath !!!!!!!!!

  • Songs travel and names travel and both get localised. Consider comedy actor Rory McGrath, who is equally happy to be called 'McGraaa' or 'McGrath'. I don't see how it matters much; the song is great and so is this performance, IMO.

  • I love this!

  • mrs mcgathh was from listowel

  • Fantastic interpretation ! I compared it with Tommy Makem, as suggested below, but Bruce is miles above.

  • Pure quality from the boss!

  • I was in the war, and told my soldiers mothers that i didn't could save their sons...

    I love this song

  • Comment removed

  • He ruined this song.

  • Oompa loompa doompa do' hey!

    Oompa loompa do' heey!

  • Bruce blows. Tommy Makem is the master of this song. Look him up.

  • @scrubbygoat Good music doesn't care who sings it.

  • i love it i have it stuck in my head

  • toto video je nejen dobre ale primo vyborne kdyz ho provazi vice hudebniku

  • toto video je nejen dobre ale primo vyborne

  • @weekelpie. I'd imagine there are a lot of things that anger you but they do so because you are English not because of false claims. And it doesn't matter where you came from, all that matters is what you feel about where you stand.

  • this song makes me shudder!

  • Well probably someone would laught about what i'm going to say. It's the first time for me to hear this song and i'am about to cry...this song took me on the battlefield and it seems that i can really feel and touch Ted's and his Mother feeling!it's like im living the same experience...amazing!

  • Sidlawman isnt Irish but his Great granfather Michael McGrath was. He drummed it into my mother when young to pronounce the th on the end, all i can say.

  • Ha wouldn't you know this was an Irish song!

"You've no legs?? Were you drunk??!"

  • Szívborzongató ez a dal.

  • hey , i love this song. but i was trying to play it on my guitar but i have some problems, did anyone know how should i play that intro ?

  • over a third of arthur wellsleys army during the peninsular war was irish and they treated them like shit

  • Two thirds of Nelsons NavyI "rishmen"

  • @w3ll1ngt0n100

1 out of three were Scots or Welsh.

1 out of 3 were English...

They treated them all like shit. The English army of that time was an equal opportunity machine run by upper class bastards that didn't discriminate. People forget that Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington , was born in

    Dublin , I think.

  • questa canzone mi da i brividi dal piacere, è semplicemente fantastica, piena di significato...Bruce il Boss!!!

  • i love you bruce

  • tildus87, I recommend listening to Fighting For Strangers by Steeleye Span. As well, 'My Son John' by Tim Hart & Maddy Prior. In fact, this song is really My Son John even with some borrowed lyrics, just arranged and performed differently.

  • It's like Bruce occasionally thinks "Oh my God, they might have forgotten that I'm the best thing ever!" So he does stuff like this to remind us.

It's alright, Bruce. We know. We know.

  • "I'd rather have my son as he used to be than the King of America and this whole navy!" ciao Irlanda

  • @pupismile It's supposed to be France, that's why it doesn't fit, he justchanged it.

  • @Fearghas999 the song is Irish and I do not do politics because I hate politics!

  • to all the war mongers who wont fight or make sure their own sons dont figt

  • Harvey Andrews - Soldier.... Love It... Love this too though...

  • ww.youtube.com/user/Vox572X#p/f/12/k2W4-0qUdHY

  • What a moving song about war, and the hardship that mother's were faced with if or when their sons returned.

  • McGrath is not pronounced with the T. the T is silent, so it's McGrah. Sidlawman is obviously not Irish. Great song boss.

  • Hey Boss, thanks for pronuncing correctly ie, `McGrath`, and not `McGra` like most of the uneducated, ignorant brigade. My mums a McGrath and it does her head in, she`s in her 80`s and still correcting people.

  • very moving version

  • How do you make out its not meant to be a sad song its about WAR a womans son had his 2 legs blown off aswell could you make a happy song from that ha ha

  • BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE

  • I never thought this song was so sad. The 97th Regimental String Band does a jig version that's almost comical. No disrespect to Mr. Springsteen but I'm not sure if this was meant to be a sad song.

  • @tachikoma747 springsteen sings it the way it was meant to be sung its an old irish anti war song written over a 100 years ago about the british war with spain in which irish regiments were used

  • @imedi the original was circulated as far back as the Napoleonic Wars, and was sung during the American Civil War too. I just thought of this song as a satirical poke at the Irish by themselves since they get roped into every foreign war

  • The whole end is wrong it should be about fighting france.

  • @EmperorOfSeleucia This version is just a variation of the traditional one...

  • The german SpeedFolk band named "Fiddler's Green" got a kickass version of this song, but I love Bruce Springesteen version too!

  • @NoNickNoKick yeah it was pretty good

  • ya evryone is a dumb shit and the boss is awesome no matter wut he sings about

  • Comment removed

  • sad song

  • I love this song

  • Best anti-war song. Ever.

  • Oh my, What a song....

  • Great song with great lyrics!!!

  • Ha! i new it waz an Irish song! i luv da springsteen

  • ??? im ENGLISH AN PROUD OF IT !! I ALSO LOVE ANYTHING BRUCE SINGS GET OVER IT AN JUST ENJOY !!!!!!!!

  • hey man this song is awasome

  • It is an Irish song about an Irishman who goes off to fight Napoleon in France and comes back without his legs, it's an anti war song and became very popular during the 1916 Rising (in Ireland) as a anti-going of to fight in the British Army in the first world war- song. It was also recorded by the Dubliners. Nice version Bruce, like it.

  • Tell that to 'Alhymers' - he has no idea!

  • I was postng for people in general who might come across this song and wonder about its origin and might be misled by some of the comments here. There is no point in telling it to Alhymers, He's English, what can you do?

  • Excellent comment, and may I also add to the protocol this song was written in 1803;-)))))

  • "foreign wars i do proclaim live on blood and mothers pain"

    keep that in mind!!!

  • my fav song of bruce.

  • the best anti war song ever!!!!!!

  • How'd you know 3 Irishmen? Two are in the corner giving out fuck about the 3rd! A "Rendition" was once a descriptive adjective to denote the feeling a song was played with. Now its a verb for torture for some poor fuck on foreign soil. It was the clowns in Dublin booing because he didn't play Born in the USA that would need discussing. They are the true dumb Paddies who apologise for being truly Irish when bumping into innate objects and want to be somebody else

  • We all know Bruce is really Irish! Mullingar I believe! This type of song must come naturally! But then again, every song comes naturally to him!

  • Im irish :) Its different but Bruce makes songs his own.. i think its cool in a unique kind of way

  • he has found himself , it not about if he is irish , it a civil war song , he feels the pain of it ,the pain of all struggles where ever yor from or what creed you are !!

  • It is not a civil war song - its a story of an Irish boy drafted by the Poms to fight the French dickhead

  • well come round here and call me a dickhead to my face , you are an arseol at a guess i,d say an aussie , what is your fucking problem , does the world owe you something, without the english no one would have fuck all.

deal with it and think about it , shit sorry dont mean to stress you out

  • Its not a civil war song - read the lyrics you pathetic piece of shit!

  • no yanks , not English, and it is a civil war song , you aussie twat, if your gonna hate at least learn your history

oh yeah are you aussie or new zealand love the old macho rugby vid us poms are so weak compared to you macho men , what a bunch of wankers.

  • Ok you fucking prat - read the bloody lyrics and demonstrate the bit that shows its a civil war song - why would you 'travel across the sea' to fight a civil war you idiot. And why does the song refer to 'The King of France and his whole navy'? Ita an anti war song that became popular during the civil war you moron.

  • Maybe this Wikipedia quote will assist you you cock puller '"Mrs. McGrath" (also known as "Mrs. McGraw") is an Irish folk song. The song tells the story of a woman whose son enters the British Army, and returns seven years later having lost his legs to a cannonball fighting against Napoleon in the Peninsular War. The general theme of the song is one of opposition to war, the mother claiming that she would rather have her son as he was. '

  • Love this intro. It reminds me of a pirate ship

  • @alhymers Read the comments above you complete fool. You were wrong, wrong, wrong. You are an idiot,

  • @chihawks87

    woot woot

    irish FTW!

  • @chihawks87 welcome back to the great exclusive Irish family greetings from Ireland .(you'll never beat the Irish spirit)

  • @chihawks87 were you actually born in Ireland? If you weren't, then sorry, but you can't call yourself Irish. It annoys me when people (mostly Americans it seems) call themselves Irish when they weren't born in Ireland and their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents weren't born in Ireland etc.

  • @WeeKelpie Were you born in barn ? If so are you a horse, The Irish Americans are just as Irish as anyone born here, Its a question of the Diaspora's consciousness. Experience the rich heritage of the Irish community's abroad, London new york etc then make your decision. For you might need to emigrate from this country yet !

  • @WeeKelpie I live in New York, and one weekend I went up to Connecticut to visit family and let me tell you they had pubs there with live irish music and everyone sang and danced as if it was a pub in the arsehole of connemara. Dublin barely even has that, and us Irish don't embrace out heritage as much as the diaspora. Feeling a connection to an area is a mindset, you don't need a passport or piece of paper to say so. Your profile says you are from UK, what the fuck is it to you anyway?

  • @brianhourigan

Could'nt have said it better. I'm from england, travelled all of america this summer. Well 33 states, and I stayed with a family who own an irish pub in New York and I loved the way you've kept onto your heritage. I guess maybe it comes from being a new nation, people would feel more inclined to remember where they are from. I don't know, but in pubs in the united kingdom you get a snot playing oasis nothing as historically rich as this. Well done BRUCE!

  • @WeeKelpie It's not about nationalism WeeKelpie, it's about heritage. American's strongly identify with their family heritage and the countries their families immigrated from.

  • @chihawks87 What the f#@k are you talking about. What you said does'nt make sense.....

  • Love the sound & this song!!

  • Up The Republic!

    Éireann go Bráth

  • Wow! You perfectly got the meaning of this song! congratuation man!
