Yep - too true. I have a lovely tape of Al Bowlly. Another favourite of mine is Henry Hall (Teddy Bears Picnic) are lets not forget Flanagan & Allen (Under The Arches). I could listen to this music all day. Sadly there are no old wireless sets nowadays and no broadcaster to transmit such musical delights. Along came the tranny (Transistor not transvestite) and the old wireless was out-datedas was the music.
Hi David, it's hard to believe that a few days ago we had our drinks out in a garden of a Warsaw cafe, on that warm lovely night in May. Today it's more like in November: I put on a warm sweater and covered my knees with a blanket. The day is just like in this song and on these photographs of a rainy London. And soon "the rockin' chair will get me..."
Thanks Lana for your sunshine offer. Yes, this is something one really needs in Poland nowadays. The whole country is hidden under the heavy grey clouds and "it keeps raining all the time"
I like Ambrose very very much. It has that kind of "class" that you can find in some English orchestras and make them a kind for theirselves. As always the illustrations and in this case the beautiful black and white photos are superb! Many thanks Gzregorz!
Regretfully we will never see nor hear his likes again. We have lost so much to what I can only describe a jungle music played on walkmans and such devices.
@goinghomesomeday1 - You like Ambrose and Sam Browne, don't you Gerald? They're way up there, but not, in my view, as good as Ray Noble/Roy Fox/Lew Stone with Al Bowlly.
Have to agree. Sam Brown was very good but I don't thing his voice has perhaps weathered the years as well as Al Bowlly's voice. Lew Stone just after taking over from Fox with Al has my vote.
@peteressex - Nice comment and thanks for it. Just as a thought, what about Glenn Miller with singer Ray Eberle. I know they came a decade later, but oh, so good too.
I think that Bob was a better vocalist than Ray. Ray, to my ear didn't have the same mellowness in his voice as Bob did. Bob does a nice job with Jimmy Dorsey's Orchestra singing Tangeringe. Either way, it's bloody great music.
@goinghomesomeday1 - You're obviously way ahead of me in your knowledge of these long-ago singers, Gerald.
Still, suffice to say, they were all wonderful singers with wonderful bands and they certainly knew how to make music. How grateful we are to be able to listen to them on YT and other means. Hope the spring/summer comes quickly for you too - take care meantime.
@paulkate72 LOL :-), Our ages are about the same. As for knowledge!! I grew up in the 50's listening to the BBC Home Service where Jack Hylton was regularly heard as well as many other good musicians. From my youngest days I was very interested in radio (wireless) and old music. When my mates in the 60's were listening to The Shadows playing Apache and Telstar by The Tornados I was listening to Glenn Miller etc. I agree, they were ALL great. Do you remember The Tornados!
@goinghomesomeday1 - Do remember The Tornadoes - had a hit called Telstar if my thinking is correct. Brings back some memories that one, let me tell you. Is there anything you don't know about music, Gerald? Even the 60s hey? More power to you I say!
I love this Ambrose and I am longing for London. At some point after we tire of Nice, we must make our way to London.
Ambrose is so sophisticated and he always plays just the perfect song when we appear and we must bring Rudy to Gosford Park for one of those lovely long weekend soirees and I especially want him to me Ivor. Gertie and Noel will surely be there... I love this song, I love the fog and misty rain.....Merci.
Genia, this morning Rudy had the same idea and you want it or not, we already have two apartments booked in good old Savoy at Charing X . They have Gibbons' Orpheans play every night and I share Gerties opinion, it's the best dance band in the whole Milky Way.
Yes, that Reisman's version is also very good. But for me, Ambrose is absolutely unbeatable. I have also Harry Roy's version which is more foxtrott-rhythmical - but this one is best of all I heared.
Wo kann ich diese Version des Songs als mp3-Datei?

Nicely melancholic and with gripping rhythm. Handsome grey and gloomy pictures of damp London.

Yes, Ambrose is the very essence of the refinement and class of the British bands of interwar era. Nothing compares that style!

We have lost so much of real enjoyment.

I have no idea who sings here. Not Sam Browne, for sure. Could it be Denny Denis? Or Lou Abelardo?

Great song, great b&w images. I especially like the "rain
pictures." Among other quirks, I'm a RAINIAC, fond of the rhythms of rain on the rooftop.
