  • I can see alot of 50 cents from PRC posting propaganda messages here.

  • so sad

  • just friggin sad. never ever pleasant to know the young and innocent taken advantage of. Seek a higher power and trust in no government-- Bless you brothers and sisters. Sad...just sad.

  • of course poor construction problem happens everywhere, not only in china, but in china, schools are the places where ppl could make a fortune if ur well-connected to the government,if u know what i mean.about sealing off the school,i just have to say,it's so typical chinese, the all openness to foreign media is all bullshit, who are we fooling?i am chinese,i know better.

  • well atleast they got 2 die with their friends and mi teacher told us about this today cause we were readin this book about earthquakes and i was like OMG!!

  • All the fault of the CCP Chinazi corruption and their negligence.

  • The mighty CCP is the most perfect government compared to the thuggish "Democracy" under USA and its allies.

CCP is the least corrupt when compared to Western demcracy

  • its very tragic. most parents lost their only child whom they placed all their hopes n dreams on 4 da future. now whos gona look after da parents when they are old...

  • Correction: 7,000 classrooms, not schools.

  • I am so sorry. The children are in Gods hands.

  • It's hard to describe in English, but it's not 7000 schools collapsed.

Actually it's 7000 "room space" collapsed. "Room space" is the unit word used in China to measure the area of a room. It's the number of spaces separated by beams overhead. For example if a room has 2 beams overhead, then it's 3 "room space".

A classroom may be as large as more than 10 "room space"

  • Is david Hawkins a prefoessional civil structure engineer or a journalist who also has highly technical knowledge on building for commenting on the use thin wire and brittle concrete in school construction???? What's funny - he was testing the materials with his bare hand (very scientific testing method apllied here).I would rather hear from a qualified engineer with proven data.

  • I'm not a construction expert. But you don't have to be to see that school collapsed while the buildings around it didn't. Or that the concrete turned into dust. But it's the parents who think the schools were badly built, as I say in the story. I'd like to know too what a civil engineer or architect would say about the quality of construction. Didn't have one handy at the time. Wanted to bring one back later, but by then the schools had been sealed off by the authorities.

  • For the quake victim's parents, they desert answers on why a life is lost? poor building design, poor quality by builder? Victim parents face many challenge:8.0 scale quake, lose child; Their action is understandable. Yet, in mid of disaster, is it professional to make political attack by quoting crying of unstable parents to attack Chinese Gov.for hiding bad news? evident? Isn't it the time, ASAP, to offer consoling, comfort, financial help, for the affected parents? Investigate come soon after

  • Hi CAviewer123,

I made no political attack against the Chinese government. And the woman quoted didn't either. She simply said she loved her daughter and told us how distraught she was about her loss. As for professionalism, it's not my job as a journalist to console, comfort or provide financial assistance -- though I have often done that too. It is to tell their story as honestly and accurately as I can.

  • Dear David, really appreciate for your reply and your clarification on this report. I agree and respect your goal, as professional journalist, to tell their story as honestly and accurately as one can. For that we thank you for your great work. Your words and your work will be meaningful to the victim's families, to the future young Chinese students who can enjoy studying in a better and save school buildings. Wish that you and all the people in the earthquake zone be well and be recovery soon.

  • The woman was crying: "Child Ah Child Ah..." (accurate translation)

Would any mother call her kid like this?

Just one mother in this video clip?

The buildings in England are weaker than Japanese architecture, why?

Please do use good actors to convince people good buildings CAN survive in earthquake 8.0, not 0.8...

  • Well, a good building can do, but I have to agree that this is not an exclusive problem of china, Japan started to develop new technologies after they suffered disasters like this, so I'm positive that the chinesse government will change their building policies in the future.

  • oh those mothers, it's heart breaking...

  • Wow, this is interesting, Mercedesci, can you have the same observation when it comes down to the United States, and Britain and pretty much Europe in there own forriegn policies.

  • What is probably going to happen is that some middle ranking officials will be scapegoated and imprisoned or executed.

What should happen is that steps are taken to ensure there is adequate enforcement of regulations so this doesn't happen again.

My thoughts are with the grieving parents.

  • a child cannot even have a decent building for a school, now that is sick beyond words.

  • chinese authority tries to hide the truth even to thier own people. Is this the kind of government you have to be proud of? Hipocrites!

  • This kind of government will be a thousand times better than yours so-called democrocy, causing wars, famine, and terrorising your own people with non-existant WMD. You brainwashed idiots.

  • Yeah, Chinese communist party is best in creating wars, famine, and terror among people.

  • Cheap materials? woa, "made in china" is everwhere I look. Should us gov consider about china's products taking over us?

  • wow, AlJazeera is gold. I wouldnt agree with the censorship part completely though. There's plenty of reporting on the shoddy school construction work on Chinese newspapers and websites, just they havent been given enough focus...and the gov't has yet to do more than just lip-service.

  • Love this video. MORE great news from Al Jazeera. Thanks so much. A HUGE breath of fresh air from the US media!!!

    PLEASE KEEP IT UP

  • exactly my emtions, where is fox or cnn's man in china?

  • eye cant view because of the beginning cry.

    I am not this strong.

plain and simple, I bury my heart.

  • heartbreak all around the world.

  • this is sad

  • we should stop talking about government corruption here and seriously help them .. they need help..Even a single penny can be helpfull..We have given our weeks salary for the China Quake relief.. but that is nothing so I urge u ppl to please donate.!!!! Please help them..

  • Wrong Dashingzeb, this kind of corruption has caused many deaths around the world in similar tragedies, here in Mexico in 1985 thousands died because they were buried in poor construction buildings. That tragedy make people think different about government and originated several powerfull people movements three years after that (Why do you think the chinese govt censored this info???), this tragedy will bring democracy to china sooner or later.

  • China's Communist government will fall if they allow CORRUPTION to keep roaming.

Do something about it! Let the media uncover corruption cases!

  • Those poor children, you can live the fairy tale that it was the mythical haarp or you can accept the reality that earthquakes are part of nature and that poor construction of their school played the next largest part in their loss

  • My heart goes out to all the ppl who lost their loved ones and homes. They are the ones who are suffering the most.

  • I think after the Beijing Olympics. Those currupted chinese officials and contractors will be brought to justice Chinese style. That means death penalty if found guilty.

  • Bullet in the back of the head. That is the way to do it.

  • Its not going to be the Western world that is going to bring down the Chinese regime but rather its own people.

They are more assertive then they have ever been, economically they now have clout.

  • That poor woman, and my heart goes out to all the souls lost. I really hope it wasent HAARP, but all the signs point to it sadly.

  • It did happen the USA caused the quake with the HARRP look it up I kid you not, I hope this opens peoples eyes this has to stop we have to regain control of our Government

  • My God...my God...that poor woman....i can't believe there are concerned with a FUCKING PASSPORT when parents are grieving for their one and only child....just sick sick sick. oh, those poor parents.....

  • CORRUPTION may destroy China rather than the buildings alone.

  • Well there back to the old ways....that was a short policy change.
