Guys please !! Like Brian Jones or not like Brian Jones !!! This is damm good guitarplaying. I know what I'm talking about. It's already hard enough to produce good sound out of a guitar, believe me. My congratulations.
Hi - Brian plays it thus: Slide up to 9th on D hit 7th on G. Then 9th on D, 9th on G (BJ uses his little finger, I prefer a bar). Then (the magic bit which makes this riff so great): Open D, hammer 9th on D, 7th G. Finally: Open A hammer 7th on A then 6th on G. WHAT A GREAT RIFFFF!
average guitar and amp..WTF? This sounds great there's nothing diminished in the overall effect of the piece..you're in music for the wrong reasons if you start talking about the 'right way' even still when the 'wrong way' sounds jsut as good. You'd be as well sitting in a padded room reading the serial numbers of microphones...bedtime for you
I do it this way too.Heck even the Stones themselves have changed things up over the years on their own songs. If it sounds good then it is good end of story
I can't fault your playing, whether the Stones play it on higher frets. It sounds great to me. A good job. Groups sometimes vary their styles on stage anyway - different to their recordings.
Excellent version - yeah, it looks as if Brian was playing it in a different neck position - but this sounds really good. The solo is nailed, my friend. Great job.
well yeah, brian DID play it higher up the neck / on lower strings... but I think with your average guitar and amp, the sound is much closer to the original when you play it like this guy. it all depends on what you're after. maybe there's a guy playing it on the "right" strings... and then kids will go "brian used the index finger, not the middle..." or "he used a fender pick" or "his volume-knob was at 8.34" ;-)
there IS a difference in where you play the notes. The tone of D and G strings (as Brian opens the phrase) is much different than the open E1st and D chord arpeggio. You play different positions on the neck, not just for the notes but for the tone. (An open E vs a fretted E is a simple illustration of a difference even when the string guage is the same.
If you've watched the vintage Stones tapes of this song played live, it's usually, like a lot of Stones live stuff, in a faster tempo than the original studio recording. For all we know, Jones could be playing an economy version of the same notes, but on a different part of the fretboard, for easier/smoother playing for the fast version.
yes, he did do the same notes--this is not to take anything away from you. However, I have yet to find anyone, including on the standard tab sites, who can accurately duplicate what Brian Jones did; not just the notes, but the fingerings as well.
That is NOT how Brian Jones did it. There is a vintage video on YouTube of how it's done, but the quality is not good. I'd be very grateful to anyone who can properly represent how Brian Jones did it.
@629pyxi I am not very smart so could someone please explain to me why it makes a difference where the notes are played if the notes are the same. I see people posting all over youtube complaining that someone did not do something EXACTLY like someone else. I don't get it. Could someone please explain why I should not enjoy this video. Thanking you in advance.
@lafreeway Truth be told, there really is no difference. But I can understand how some people would want to play it with the identical fingerings to the recorded versions. I get fanatical about playing some songs exactly correct, but for other songs I couldn't care less.
thank you for covering the stones. most of the tabs suck. and its easier to learn from watching you : D please cover more stones. you help me alot. and i love your tone
They seem to be different to yours and I thought this may be hepful if you figured this song by ear and haven't seen i played. I am a complete guitar beginner so forgive me if I misunderstand.
@weczq4 These days, it comes down to whichever guitar has strings that aren't caked in rust and crud! Otherwise, I try to use something that's a bit similar to what's on the recording.

This guy plays damn good! If I had been able to play a guitar this good, I sure as hell wouldn't have been an air conditioning repairman.

And I imagine that MrJohnnyVolume isn't a professional musician, either--seems a bit too anxious to show off what he knows.

If you search on here for 'The Rolling Stones (NME-1965)' and check that video (I couldn't put the link in this comment)
The song starts at 6:43.
The main riff can be seen near 7:30.
The chorus chords can be seen near 7:52.
They seem to be different to yours and I thought this may be hepful if you figured this song by ear and haven't seen i played. I am a complete guitar beginner so forgive me if I misunderstand.

@EzaBlade1 Same notes, different hand position.
privettricker 1 year ago
@EzaBlade1 The way Brian Jones played it (Hammer Ons) is hard to pull off without significant amplification.
Makes me think of the All Right Now riff. Several ways to play it, but no-one does it the way as Kossoff originally recorded .

I've never seen a tab or demo of the basic riff that wasn't missing at least a couple of notes. You got 'em all - congrats.
