The Velvet Underground and Lou's attempt at capturing the happy top 40 pop sound of the times, for what ever reason. It sort of flies in the face of his other music. Contrast this with "HEROIN" or "Waiting for my man", 'ol spooky Lou is trying to pull a fast one on you! ...but it IS a nice song.
@DeeDuckShin Well, knowing the body of work that he put out and the dark, edgy stuff that he usually incorporated, it would make sense they would try a crack at a "pop" sounding tune, especially if managers and producers wanted them to get more commercial exposure. They were never well known widely in the greater public, although he had a strong hard-core following and is considered a break-out kind of guy. "Take a walk on the wild side" is probably his best known tune, contrast that with this.
@ForbiddenVegetable Hey thanks for seeing my point of view! I knew there was something to it. I was beginning to think that there were nothing but a bunch of pissed off people out there. Yeah..the way record companies were in those days, many of them just pimped the groups to put out the latest trend that could turn a buck! Sure Lou and the Underground were creative, but they had to pay the bills too, and not just cater to the darkly brooding bohos down in the Village, hence, this upbeat tune.
What I love about the Velvet Underground is that you're never sure what you're going to hear whenever you listen to an album of theirs. When I played Loaded for the first time and I heard this song, I knew that the album would be great. From that short guitar intro to that random switch in rhythm near the ending of the song, I knew that I was in for a hearing of pure awesomeness.
OMG. I've had this song stuck in my head for like 9 years. Just getting re-aquainted with it now.

Doug Yule is singing. He sung on several tracks because Lou's voice was shot during most of the recording sessions from singing on tour.

@TheEldoradoKid Who are you to say what Lou Reed was doing thinking or feeling with this song?

@TheEldoradoKid I'm pretty sure Lou was under pressure from the record company to produce hit singles so the album was more commercially inclined.

@TheEldoradoKid I dunno. I concede this sounds NOTHING like VU, but it not only sounds like Beach Boys, it sounds great.
