  • Astroworld was not Houston's only theme park as stated in the video description. Who remembers Busch Gardens?

  • So you are claiming that Reliant wanted the Astroworld/Waterworld land?! Lol, a single person owns the Astroworld land and uses it for parking for the Reliant. Astroworld/Waterworld was a failure for failing to update or upgrade any rides that weren't 6-flags required.

  • The title of this video is "A brief history of Astroworld." Yet you failed to mention what it was that drove Astroworld into the ground. Parents began leaving their kids in record numbers during the summer, so that they would not have to pay for daycare, because the season tickets were much cheaper. After a couple of weeks of this the kids got bored and formed gangs. It became unsafe to visit the park. Six flags should have eliminated the season tickets and the problems would have been solved.

  • @TexasPediatrics exactly

  • @TexasPediatrics very true, the season pass is the worst thing to happen to theme parks. I went to Six Flags Arlington last year and it was just horrible.

  • When you close amusement parks, the terrorists win. Have you seen any roller coasters in the middle east? I didn't think so. To ever closed Astroworld, your new name is bin Laden.

  • @DrDupe A new theme park "Earthquest" is being built in New Caney, TX! Google it.

  • @CelestialWoodway

Thanks for the tip. Looks like a very ambitious project. Hopefully, it can overcome its obstacles and be built.

  • In LA I still remembered when Knotts Berrys Farm was close to being demolished before Cedar Fair saved it. I'm thinking if the city had bought back Astroworld from Six Flags maybe Astroworld would still be running and better than before.

  • and now where astroworld used to stand is just a big patch of mud :l yeah like mud is going to make Houston any better.

  • it sux cuz i visited texas for my cuzin's college graduation when i was 9 and i was supposed to go to astroworld but my mom took me the day after it closed... it also sux cuz they scrapped the majority of their rides.... damn bastards.... jus tryna make a quick buck....

  • kudos for the vid, made me wanna cry :( I can't believe it's been 5 years already, damn jerks. Coulda left our Astroworld alone, but noooo gotta try to get more money out of the property. Nevermind all of us for whom it was a tradition, every single year. *sigh* if I was rich i'd of bought it and made them stay!

  • Closed thanks to all the gangs!

  • I am a houstonian and I miss astroworld! I was only a kid when I went but it was sooo fun!!!

  • oh and i dont live in houston but my whole family except me is from there and i used to go a lot i live in san antonio

  • aww i loved astroworld my mom got stuck at the top of a rollercoaster in the 80's and i won a giant spongebob

  • astro world wsas what made houston fun. now houston is just an oil tycoon area, because obama shut down nasa. i swear to god if they plan to destroy the dome, im gonna riot

  • They should've renovated it,hired more security and had everyone go through metal detectors before they could go in. It was nothing but a bunch of animals toward the end. Thug, gang bangin punks who would be better off on some remote island that was quickly sinking into the ocean.

  • In 2006 I was so happy about moving to Houston from out West for school because of AstroWorld, and then I was so disappointed to learn that they tore it down just the previous year. Now, as I pass by the land, it's hard to believe that an amusement park used to be there. It's nothing but a barren wasteland. Bring Astro World back.

  • i think you're wrong. i-pods have been around since 1956. you must've been thinking of an automobile.

  • Heres some truth , tho , the ceo and all 32and everyone that had anything to do with the closing of Astro World were fired the very next day , And I say GOOD...Yeah the lasd was to Valuable thats why its a parking lot now, for the houston rodeo. I'm glad that they scraped Astro World so we can have more parking for the Texans and the Rodeo

  • I got married at Astroworld in 2000, so it holds a special place in my heart. I miss it so much

  • I grew up going to Astroworld and loved it but in it's last few years it turned very ghetto.

  • it's much more profitable now that its AN EMPTY LOT. 5 years later and absolutely NOTHIONG has changed. They definatly screwed us over. They tore down more than an amusement park. they tore memories that i'llk never experience again.

    thanks alot.

  • I'm going to Six Flags Fiesta Texas tomorrow. I wish I didn't have to travel that much to go to a theme park. :( I miss AstroWorld Sooo much.

  • man i fricking loved that place it was awesome i still have my member ship card

  • damm . had good times

  • I swear to you that if i ever win the lotto of an exagerating amount, i will build another theme park in houston with the same blueprint as astroworld. As God is my witness, I will.

  • Thank You man

If only every houstonian would promise that.

And i will be your first visitor

  • I speak the truth. I miss that place. I am not going to lie to you, I get kinda emotional everytime i pass through there and all i see is grass. I think thats BULL!!

  • I want to cry now :( Astrowold was my favorite place to go when I was a kid.

  • astroworld i had evrey summer since i was 2 and im literaly crying now all over my computer you dont know how many memories i have there...............

  • i hate the people who took down astroworld. i grew up in houston, going to astroworld every summer and a few weekends during the school year. viper was my first roller coaster. it had my first everything. they didnt tear down a park, they tore down lengendary childhood memories.

  • Keeping it rich. Keep Houston Rich.

  • That was the only thing I wanted to do as a kid....go to Astroworld.

  • i live in austin. i went to astroworld every year. it is SAD that this had to happen. at least i had the dome/world to enjoy for evey summer. i dont know what is comparable to missing this place other than taking all electronic devices away from you....because we NEVER had any. unless you were there, you will never truly know how much fun it was. RIP

  • I was 5 in '68 and my mom and dad took me and my little brother there. What a great time!

We went there many times after and I had a season pass in '79 that cost only $37.

  • a theme park that all houstonians will forever remember

  • R.I.P arstoworld they should make a disney world here disney should be able to pay for the park

    forget sixflags!!!!!!

  • r.i.p astroworld never forgotten, never you are the best park in the world rest in peace

    :((((

  • my childhood is gone. i'm from inner-loop houston, live out of state now.. used to be able to take the city bus to astroworld. i had hoped to take my kids there when they were old enough, another year or so...

i've only just now heard it's gone. XLR-8 was my favorite, although i enjoyed the Viper and Sky Screamer too...it seemed like every time i was there there was a train stuck upside-down on the loop of the Viper, a good memories. i'll always remember the sights and sensations. :)

  • houston is boring ugh astro world was the only thing i use todo now is just borig houston is gay >=(

  • Living in the Beaumont area, Astroworld was the only option for a good rollercoaster without driving 4 hours to San Antonio or Dallas. Now that's our ONLY option. I drove past the Astroworld site a couple weeks ago. Very depressing. Houston is effectively dead to me now.

  • I was born in Houston and used to go there when I was a kid. Greezed Lightnin' was my first roller coaster. I was five.

  • i miss astroworld sooo much! we used to go 4 or 5 times every summer and then on weekends during the fall. And I have been going there since I was 3 years old...poor Atroworld. Now its just a big lot with grass on it leading to a parking lot. They closed it because one yard of the land right next to the highway cost over 8 million dollars, and they were costing more to run the park that it was making. DDDD=

  • A Six Flags Park Is Going To Tear Down GREAT RIDES!For real.

  • A Six Flags Park Is Going To Tear Down GREAT RIDES!For real.

  • damn man!! seriously houston deserves a huge theme park I mean were bigger and better than san antonio or dallas...and we are in texas by the way!! so yes everything here in texas should be bigger and better!!

  • That big white roller coaster at the end looks like a heart attack thriller

  • That coaster my friend is the Texas Cyclone. Houston's best wooden coaster made! I never got a chance to ride it but passing it was what made me feel at home. Now there is nothing. 20 years from now I will tell my kids the story of Astroworld and Splashtown. Six Flags if you are reading I hope you are happy that you broke so many Houston hearts.

  • I went to Six Flags Mid America outside of St. Louis 3 times in the 70s.

"Mo-Mo The Monster" a glorified Merry Mixer on steroids was my favorite thing.

I NEVER would've messed with any of that upsidedown stuff, damn.

I think it was 1984 they dropped 1 of their cable Sky Tram cars and 8 people got killed.

If they didn't close Astro World there was gonna be corners cut and catastrophes happen.

I'm told the St Louis' roller coaster was lame, and I'd not go on another unless a woman was involved.

  • I just returned from Texas, what a beautiful place!! Yes, I agree, Six Flags has effectively ruined the American roller coaster experience.

  • I passed the 610 loop this past weekend. I hope they do something good to the land soon. I could still smell the funnel cakes and hear the sounds of people screaming.

  • That was the Texas Cyclone. It was a wooden coaster and it was bad ass and bone jarring! I rode it many times...you had to be 5 ft tall just to ride in the back car of the coaster because it was such a rough ride....it was known as one of the best wooden coasters in the world and some say the best!

  • Six Flags is a monster that doesn't care about environments or families. Long live roller coasters!

  • = ( im sad

  • this made me cry...

    RIP Astroworld...

    :'(

  • So has the area where AstroWorld was once at, been rebuilt with new development?

  • Nope, it's just empty land :(

  • thats all we had to do in houston, it was a retarded decision to take it down

  • There is a huge plan in the works to build a new amusement park north of the city new New Caney on hwy 59. It will be called "EarthQuest". Its in the begining stages right now, so its about 5 years away.

  • ASTROWORLD WHY YOU?

  • I agree with all of ya'll. They shouldn't have closed down THE BEST AMUSMENT PARK EVER. Now the only park we have is Splashtown.

  • i say hell ya to every single one of you who hate those people who closed down astroworld

  • I miss the Cyclone!! :'(

  • They are building a new wooden roller coaster in Kemah. I know its not the same, but is closer than Dallas or San Antonio.

  • Awesome! Haven't been to Kemah in a while...

  • Clearly one of the dumbest business mistakes in Houston history, oh wait!! ENRON!!

  • yeah :)

  • Kieran Burke should die.

He did this for personal gain, and took away the main tourist attraction in Houston.

    Now we have nothing. NOTHING!

  • Not just people from Houston, but plenty of us from Louisiana don't have a theme park to go to now either!

  • Reminds me of the Oilers, at least houston has the texans but it is not the same. The same if houston gets another park, astroworld will always be part of the city.

  • When I found out astro world was closing i was pretty pissed off. Houston is a great city and it deserves an amusement park. Fuck those asshjole at six flags. I hope houston gets another park soon.

  • F---- Kieran Burke and the other cold heartless former Sux Flags managment! They closed Astroworld for no reason!

  • f*** ya! they already got like 900 billion $s without selling the land right? its fuckin sick

  • that bulll shit that all america is gonna be is fucking condos and buildings i went there before lots of fun i went last summer for vacation

  • Ok this is bullshit..property isnt expensive off loop610...the fault remains with piss poor city managemet and they are passing the buck...4th largest city in america cant keep an amusement part open and saying it's because the land is more vaulable is bullshit

  • I Hate Six Flags for closeing Astro World

  • That sucks...selling fun for living...serious bull.

  • Nope, just more apartments.

  • Sigh. RIP AstroWorld. I wonder if there is gonna be a new park in place of this?
