As far as I'm concerned, I would have much preferred they sacrificed some extremity for an actually theme to the levels.. Any type of area, ANY type of area can be made to look this 'extreme', just play a Sonic game and you'll see what I mean.

The story mode isn't the entire game. With ranked speed runs and 30-something Time Trial maps, the game really has a lot of content, at least for more dedicated players.
