I recall these in the 70's as a child. Remember the engines were loud and the smoke from the engine would fog out the entire intersection! I think the EPA had a word with them!
@artistmac There's a rail museum in Portola, CA, in the High Sierras that's quite nice. Visitors can go up into the cab of the Burlington Zephyr and ride in the cupola of a caboose.
@7927jackpark For us railfans, it's truly the happiest place on earth. This train brought back a lot of happy memories of taking this train up to Ft. Sheridan, where my mom worked, to have lunch with her.
My Dad used to work for the C&NW from 1968-1971, his office was in the old Northwestern Station, Used to ride this train into town with hum on some weekends. I too lived in Arlington Heights. Fun days!
@pianomanmaestro Union Pacific bought the C&NW in 1995. I lived in Park Ridge in the 70's and used to watch them come into town on Friday evenings after school.
I miss Chicago.....well not the winter but now i could go for a deep dish pizza or a beef . I lived in union Il for 3 years next to that museum. thanks for the video
I grew up in Arlington Heights in the 70's. I remember these trains! Cool. I can't bring myself to say "Ogilvie Transportation Center." It's the North Western station dammit!
I loved those old green-and-yellow cars and locomotives. And they never should have torn down the old North Western Station. It and Union Station were beautiful bookends on Canal St.
My grandfather worked for Chicago and Northwestern back in the 30's and 40's. this was in Clinton,Iowa. He was killed by one of the trains unfortuneately. He tried to hop on to one of the trains to get lights as the pwer went out at his home, and his foot slipped on the ice and he fell under the train and it cut his legs off. He died not long after that. he was 52 at the time.
wat happen to that train that goes 300 mph or that other one that pulls on some kind of energy i 4got but still they have to upgrade them time's are changing so is architicture.
i guess you never heard of a rail road museum, huh...... you cant really be leave that they still use that train in the video do you? boy, id like to see your comments on a video of the UP big boy steam engine that is still running the rails all over the country.

This looks like the Illinois Railway Museum in Union. Always makes for a nice visit, especially on a sunny summer day.

I wish I could have been born a few years earlier!
If they only still had their 400 service!
Walk 3 blocks from my house to the train. And take the Flambeau 400 up to Mercer for a fishing trip. What a ride that must have been!

I recall them growing up in Park Ridge.
Those F-7'S E-8'S AND E'9 CRADAL CABS were pretty loud compared to the moden day Metra engines.
Some of those remained even after the RTA?metra takeover.
Also if someone knows where to hear the old radio spots please direct me to them.
MIKECNW 4 years ago
The BN E9s weren't retired until 1990 and the CNW F7s were given to New Jersey Transit in 1983 or scrapped.
hfkjehgufihgiufewi 4 years ago
the F7's were also sold off to metra.
