the australian crews coach has coached me a few times... he said sally always went out too hard.... nothing else to it apparently she did it all the time and wouldnt listen to coaching advice
I am A rower and from experiance I can tell you that it is hard and you need alot of strength to make it through and Unfortuantly Sally didn't have it and that is why she collapsed , No strength or determination ....
they dropped back because everyone else surged forward. The Australians rated very high in the first 1000. Use up all your energy in the first half of the race ,and you've got nothing in the tank for the 2nd half. No different than race car drivers who run out of gas 200m before the finish line.
Fly and die - that was their race strategy, Sally didn't have enough to finish, she went too hard, too early. Sally didn't quit, she just didn't hold enough back for the sprint. Most of the posters on here are 13 year old idiots who have no clue about racing at the elite level. I blame the coach for a crap race strategy, the aussies were rating so high they couldn't help but collapse at 1300.
let's focus on facts, not on what journalists *say* happened. First - watch Sally's rowing throughout the race, she's locking and loading that oar all the way to the 1800m mark. She didn't give up with 2/3 to go. Second, look at stroke rating. The Aussies went out way, way too high, they started to fade at 1000m because they couldn't hold it. In the overhead shot at 7;02 you can see all 8 oars of the AUS boat still going.
Hehehe, "Lay Down Sally" - you have to see it to believe it. What gets me is that she'd done this at least twice before in competition events and still they let her row. You can definately feel it when someone drops their output, they think they can get away with it, but the coach can see it (puddle size/body language/etc.) If only there was an ejector seat on that boat!
she quit. the only thing australians are good at or care about is sport, and she made herself the scapegoat of a nation by throwing in the towel less than 2/3 of the way down the course. she lay down way before australia was out of the running, but the way those dutch girls came hammering home its debatable whether the canary yellows would have had a decent crack at a medal in any case. nevertheless, quitting is gay and more befitting an english or american.
Read all the comments so far- they did have chance of winning a medal but with that mental bitch how could they ever. They all know she had mental problems so their (the team) are all to blame. Even the coach and boss knew. Anyway Sally Robbins in my humble opinion should be shot in the head. You don't get in trouble for putting down dog that is already fucked up.LOL. Also how on earth could she laugh and smile at the press conference afterwards when the other team mates hadto apologize to her.
Just shut the fuck up about the whole aus needing someone to blame. Sure Aus wasnt coming anywhere near gold but everyone in the crew weren't blaming her for the loss but blaming her for the lack of commitment and loyalty to the crew to just give up. this is coming from a fellow rower,
You've obviously never actually rowed in a boat. The other girls have said that Sally dropped all her pressure in the water between the 1000 and 1500m mark. Now when someone stops pulling in a boat everyone else can feel it and the boat starts to move a lot slower. That's what pushed them back down the feild. Laying down was the straw that broke the camels back. Bronze was still a strong possibility if she'd put in for 2000m
Octuple wtf? There is no such boat as an "Octuple". Regardless of "putting pressure on as a team" you can still tell when someone slacks off by the size of their "puddle" and cause their leg drive slacks so does the timing which fucks up everyones rythym. There is a reason Sally couldn't find anyone good to row with her in a pair last year in Tas and didn't get picked.
I know what your talking about they use them to teach people how to row. Oh and cleaver is a SHAPE of an oar specifically the shape of the blade, what you refer to I think is sculling oars (like a quad, double or single scull). Whats the point of rowing in a "Octopule"? They aren't raced officially. Btw I know a bit about rowing, but for a broken foot I would've raced at Henley.
earth to gierwmcg - if Australia was in bronze medal position, why didn't they medal in the world championships in the 3 years leading up to Athens? Watch the video, you can see her pulling just as hard as the rest right up to the 8;20 mark. The Aussie race plan was fly & die, and they faded at 1300 because they went out too hard too early. It happens often in rowing. The mature crews hold something back for the end - the US, Romanians and Dutch, as examples.
I've competed at HRR and I've not seen 8X as a competition boat. I have crewed an MB8X+ at HRR but just as a exhibition race. It is a very fast boat, I used to think of it as two 4X+ rather than a scull version of an 8+ it helped me, dunno how the other guys who were from a variety of disciplines thought of the mechanics of the 8X+.
Wow. I read all the furore about Sally Robbins in this race and had imagined the Aussies were on for Gold before she collapsed. Looking at this, though, they had already dropped well back between the 1000m and 1500m marks.
its because she apparently stopped putting pressure on in the strokes. she may have still been moving but she stopped trying. everyone else could feel it and shes crazzzyyyy. NEVER let her represent Aust. again!

Yeah, even if she didnt stop rowing, Australia still would've come a pathetic last!
In traditional Aussie fashion the rest of the team needed someone else to blame for the loss!

Are you kidding? Australia is five times tougher than wherever you come from. We don't blame each other.

Im from Australia dumbfuck, so id know more than you about the subject!
We always blame something or someone other than ourselves! is sooo pathetic!

is the whole laydown sally thing caused by her lying down at the finishing line??????
theblackone2006 3 years ago
Yeah apparently so! if you look at 7:02 when everyone is still rowing Australia are in last place.
Sally lays down just before the finish line at 8:20

Yes I have actually, was in a men's 8 octuple!
(if ur talking to me)
They were way out of 3rd place contention, obviously they weren't putting the pressure on as a team!
But hey its better if you have someone to blame right?

Octuple scull!!
you obviously dont know much about rowing!
using 2 cleaver oars instead of just single oars!
Octuple means there are 8 rowers in the boat, you know like "an eight"!
And yes, she wasnt "keeping stroke", thats why the timing collapsed, but only at the end did she lay down
best just stick to your beach rowing! :)
shaggz20022002 3 years ago

Not sure what your point is, your just emphasising mine! :)
They are officially raced though, have raced at Putney, Henly regattas, and Bedford head of the rivers. As well as racing 8 single sculls
