OH, I had a wonderful time! The many shades of our Black Women and Black Men was just so aspiring, and seeing the fashion was great. The dancing and energy most amazing
@mingusman84: It's a huge project, isn't it? It's fantastic, but not entirely thorough.......Femi and Seun sure should be proud (ofcourse yes) because FELA's gone on broadway.......But Fela is not represented properly in this play- and this is unprofessional.......this same guy representing Fela can act as a Ugandan, Rwandan, Ghanaian and still speak with the same accent. I rest my case

OMG! Too disappointed in this musical...why not consult people first? this guy's not like FELA at all...I mean that's not how Fela talks...the problem with these American filmmakers is that they always think all Africans talk in the same way...come on world! even the dance (look at that)....well I'm writing a new play titled KALAKUTA REPUBLIC and VISTA REPUBLIC will follow that....I get so disappointed when stuffs like these are misinterpreted or rendered wrongly
@jacobson00 Should I? well why not? But FELA is such a huge project and I don't think it's thorough. The concept is nice but interpretation is foul. It makes me kinda wonder if the players even referred to Fela's tapes which is everywhere on youtube....My pain is that of unprofessional ism and misinterpretation. And this is where I am alone with other Nigerians.
Great, great show. Saw it a few days after it opened and was really shocked by how good it was. Music is great, of course, but the performers are extraordinary -- they absolutely tear down the house. So glad it was nominated for the Tony.
because nobody cares. Because that is the broadway sistem... And is hard to find out that the management knows about all but doesn't do anything... May be she is cheap supervisor, or only she will not follow the UNION Laws.... Sorry for the show
I saw this a few days ago. If the guy who plays Fela doesn't get a Tony, then there's something seriously rotten with that award. He's what Broadway should be about, not movie stars grasping for stage cred (like Ms. Johansen).
Have you actually seen her in A View from a Bridge? I wen in with the mentality that she was going to be the worst part of the show, I came out thinking she was one of the best performers in the show if not the best! Sure, movie stars aren't always the best option and producers will have them cast so there show gets RP, but this role was amazing for her and I wouldn't mind at all if she won a Tony Award. Most movie stars got their start in theatre by the way!
Fela! is the best show I've ever seen on Broadway! It's just that good. Anyone interested must see it. You will not be disappointed. This show better be nominated for some Tony awards. It will be a travesty of justice if it is not.
I want this broadway play or whatever it is on DVD so i can watch it on my widescreen tv, this is so interesting and different than all that other stuff they show on these tv shows, I am glad I found this stuff, thanks
will be better if management change the wardrobe supervisor there, The dancers struggle because of her... All the show goes crazy because of it. I love that show, did a lot of work on the costumes, but Sue Stepnik CAN'T be supervisor, when she even cam told me what is the problem withthe costume, which I need to fix - 5 min before the show...
@GeorgiTashev You sure do have an ax to to grind. You got your virtual slap. Why don't you got to the folks who have control and complain about the wardrobe.
believe or not the management knows about all of that, but the broadway sistem works by other way. she is cheap as supervisor, she doesn't follow the TWU laws, always have exuses for all and she change her mood as man without brain.
I saw them perform on Jimmy Fallon and they are AMAZING!!!! I tried my best to figure out their name and finally got it right, he would not show a close up of the name of this group and its really a great performance, wow, where can i buy this on DVD????
yesterday wed December 9 2009 i went on Broadway and saw that show it was amaziiing amazing. If anyone have the chance go see it you wont regret it. The show will leave you to want more.
Saw this show right after it opened on Broadway and it totally exceeded my expectations -- and with music by Fela Kuti and choreography by Bill T. Jones, my expectations were already pretty high. The whole takes the form of a kind of simulated night at Kuti's "Shrine," so the emphasis is definitely on the music and dance -- but along the way you get a view of Kuti's life and a crash-course in colonialism in Africa, in a TOTALLY non-preachy way. Moving and energizing and brilliantly performed.
Sub-Saharan Africa is more heavily affected by HIV and AIDS than any other region of the world. An estimated 22.4 million people are living with HIV in the region - around two thirds of the global total. In 2008 around 1.4 million people died from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and 1.9 million people became infected with HIV. Since the beginning of the epidemic more than 14 million children have lost one or both parents to AIDS.1.
FELA! My people, go, No, a run fi de African Shrine (The Eugene O'Neil Theatre on Broadway, that is!) and see FELA! THE BEST SHOW I HAVE SEEN IN ALONG TIME! This was an experience, and a great tribute to one of our great African warriors. Ashe!
@sk8rtuti THATS AWESOME Congratz and i just saw the show like 2weeks ago my Friend Shakira did soo good.. aswell as the rest of da cast ..i am very proud of em...n thinkin about auditioning 4 dis show!... we shuud go see it 2getha 1day.. cool
"Upside Down" is one of my favorite Fela Kuti songs. A video of the Fela! cast performing "Kere Kay" needs to be uploaded onto this page.

@uteme12345 - Femi Kuti saw the musical last week and found it to be fantastic. Seun is also on the record as greatly enjoying it.
No, it's not a perfect representation but it's a bold step for Fela and Broadway. Perhaps you need to change your perspective.

But who cares. This show is marketed to an English Speaking, generally American audience. It all sounds the same to us.
