I only clicked this video to see her dress XP I'd had enough opera for around half-one in the morning, but it turns out I kept it on then used it as background music, listening to the whole thing! I never thought Anna would be used like that, haha!
Towards the end, I realised I know this song - The Doctor (EMH) in Star Trek: Voyager sung the aria as part of his opera performance xD

@Sapphire848 It is pretty cause she has a beautiful voice, but here she´s out of tune many times, flat, at the beginning there´s a problem with tempo, the voice sounds a little too open sometimes, too airy, and finally, it seems to me she isn´t sincere. @skitzo429 WIth the exception of "sempre libera" Violetta is not a coloratura role. Lyric sopranos have struggled with this one aria, and coloratura sopranos struggle with the rest of the role. I don't think you give her enough credit, buddy.
@dougbalt "lyric" and "coloratura" are not mutually exclusive, many women are both, as the ideal violetta should be, the same type of voice best suited to rigoletto, Verdis other flagship lighter (relatively) soprano role. my problem with Netrebko is that the majority of her repertoire are bel canto coloratura roles, shes a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice, but her technical agility is never clean in this repertoire.
@skitzo429 - Totally agreed. Ms. Netrebko has a beautiful voice nd wonderful stage presence but, as you call ie "technical agility" is no there. This, I guess is why I hated her "Casta Diva." I think she'd be an outstanding Pucinni soprano.

Hello again shawDAMAN and thank you for your response to my comments on Anna Netrebko, it appears we agree to disagree. Opinions are what makes you tube interesting. I confess I am not an expert on the singing voice and different techniquesand qualities required to perform different arias in the way the composer wished them to be sung I only base my opinion on what I see and hear if that makes any sense. Who is your favourite soprano past and present? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again.
I love Netrebko, granted her voice sounds rather tired but are singers not given any grace these days? Unbelievable voice, looks, figure, acting ability, totally charismatic, what more is there to say,the finest and most beautiful soprano I have ever heard or seen. IKnow from reading the many thousands of comments on You Tube that she has her critics, I am sorry I cannot understand why. There have been many fine sopranos both past and present but this young lady surpasses them all by a million miles.
@lanzanut She is surely pretty and has a basically nice voice. But I have heard many off pitch notes, her florid singing leaves much to be desired, and the high note here was thin and a teensy bit hoarse. Your claim that she surpasses all other sopranos past and present by a million miles is absolutely ridiculous to me, sorry.
@lanzanut I agree with you. I think these critics think that the only reason she's been popular is because she's so attractive. Now that she's had her baby, she's gained a lot of weight and isn't as attractive, but she's still selling out crowds at the Met. She does so because she can really sing.
why she takes Opera for athletics, she has to sing not to shout...
ad80ad said:
To whom did you refer? Are you listening to these post-war Traviatas (so beloved by hooligans in the "loggione"), before Anna Netrebko arrived abolishing forever the circus freaks who made "italo-opera" a never-laughing-joke?
In this case, I agree with you: they have to stop shouting, but you are late. Anna already shut up them forever.
Pregnant women always look their best. Anna is no exception. Yes she is Russian, but in classical music and ballet, Russia always was and is tops. Spasibo Anna za vsjo.
@gustavojoris You could probably do it better... :) Singing isn't about one note. It's about musicality, beauty of the voice, interpretation... Bad moments hapen to everybody. Callas had moments when she tourned entire orchestra back because she slipped a note, and still she is one of the greatest. And Anna Netrebko IS one of the greatest today, in every way... NO OFFENCE :)
@zzp1 dude, you're right there, she has no "metallic" characteristic in her voice, but I must tell you, there is a certain feature thats ome people have (Maria Callas was a soprano that was said to have such a metallic voice...is nothing wrong, is nothing but a simple characteristic of the voice)...I've been told to have metallic voice too, so I must say, please if you don't understand a certain concept in singing, don't say it is stupid, things tend to turn against ignorance...
She's very beautiful, but her voice is far too metallic-sounding for my ear. She can make an excruciatingly ugly sound followed by a beautiful one. Her vibrato is too wide at the top for such a young singer, and her coloratura is labored. This is not a great performance. If she didn't look like she does I don't think she'd be so popular.
If you want to hear an exquisite version of this great aria listen to any of Sutherland's from the 60's; there's no comparison.
@Eiswirth1 Wow! "Excuciatingly ugly sound followed by a beautiful one"! Perhaps you just have a headache which distorts your hearing and can't appreciate what is really BEAUTIFUL! I guess you should just have a good rest instead of writing this nonsense! And also check your ears. Of course, AN can just be not "your" voice, but in this case it's more honest just to admit it than to make up all this stuff: vibrato, etc! AN is beautiful, but she is a GREAT SINGER! Really ugly sound is BARTOLI's!
@serenaluce You're the one who should have their ears checked. I was never impressed by her singing from day one, and that rendition of "Sempre Libera" is not pretty. This is my honest opinion. She certainly doesn't belong on the same level as Callas or Sutherland.
@Eiswirth1 I only mentioned that your ears should be checked as you (NOT me!) use TOO strong words for the occasion - "EXCRUCIATINGLY UGLY SOUND"! OK, you don't like Netrebko's interpretation. It's not the end of the world! Tastes differ. It's impossible that EVERYBODY likes a particulare, even the greastest of artists! But what's so UGLY here? Nobody sounds so hysterical as you do! Perhaps your ears are TOO sensitive to ANY sound at all and need medical attention? Bartoli is less EXCRUCIATING?!
@Eiswirth1 Also, yes, Sutherland is great as e.g. Callas, Tebaldi, Moffo, Caballe.. So what? They are giants of the PAST! Times change and voices change with them. Nobody sings like them anymore! You can't find anything beautiful in the PRESENT? Should opera die if Sutherland doesn't sing? Of course, no comparison! Can you compare Gregory Peck with Brad Pitt? Whom can you compare with Charlie Chaplin? You prefer to live in the past and not to listen to new stars? Then don't say they are all bad!
@serenaluce What difference does it make if a singer is retired or currently singing? It's the voice that matters, and the body of work they produced over the course of a career. And frankly yes, one could compare Gregory Peck to Brad Pitt if they wanted to, because there's a recorded history of their work. I love many current, young singers; why would I not want someone to sing at a very high level of skill and beauty? Your argument makes no sense.
@Eiswirth1 It makes huge difference as different times cause different singing! What about modern composers of serious music? They can't write in the same style of music as in the time of e.g. baroque! Schnitke can't be like Handel. Is he much worse? He is just different, and not everybody can understand this kind of music! OK, it's the same repertoire, but Netrebko is just Netrebko and not Callas or Sutherland! She is a NEW STAR! Compare her with singers of OUR time. Any names whom you love?
@madlucia What are you talking about? Everything is changing and singing technique as well! It's impossible to sing the same way as 60 years ago! Think about it. You can not like Netrebko. It's your right. Also, that Netrebko is not able to hold the standard is only YOUR opinion. There are so many of her fans all over the world who won't agree with you to say the least! Actually, Netrebko is a salvation for the deplorable state in which we find opera now! So, who are those mysterious superstars?
@Eiswirth1 Metallic voice? You must be kidding buddy...or you just wanna leave a trace of arrogant shit on her sites? Prefer "golden age sopranos"?! Ok, you are welcome but please leave Netrebko alone, she's obviously not for your level...
@madlucia I 'm not offended with impudent and stupid ones who interfere with no argumentation, I try not to talk to them. So, so long mad lucia, so much for that!
@madlucia I wonder who wants to be on your LOWEST level if you call a person who doesn't agree with you an IDIOT right away? Is it your MUSICAL ARGUMENT why you don't like Netrebko? What exactly in her exquisite, warm singing doesn't convince you? Does it show your "high" musical level if you like Eiswirth1 only say that the other contemporary singers are better than Netrebko but can't give a single name to support your point of view?
@madlucia If you choose a user's name "mad lucia" you think that normal people will take you seriously? LOL You call idiots people who don't agree with you and interfere just for fun! Congratulations! Get a life, crazy Lucia di Lammermour! LOL You think that YOU give MUSICAL ARGUMENTS?! Can't you read mine? I'm talking about AN's VOICE, compare her SINGING and SINGING TECHNIQUE with Bartoli's. You hear metallic sound in AN's rendition. I give you and example of trully METALLIC and UGLY singing!.
@madlucia Again you are not objective. I only mentioned Bartoli's singing as MY example of trully METALLIC and UGLY sound! If you compare Netrebko with her and think that Netrebko sounds uglier it's YOUR opinion. But you don't say it. You prefer to call people idiots right away or having monopoly on something.. Also, in my comments I only highlighten SEVERAL important words to make my statement clearer to which points I reply. Show me where I WRITE ALMOST EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS as you say
@spqrmor Yes, metallic. That's what I hear. "She's not for my level?" What does that mean? Because I have standards? I liked her when she first became popular, and bought several of her CDs, but the more i listened to her the less I liked what I heard. And she's done nothing to improve her technique. I'll say it again: if she didn't look like a movie star (who sells tickets) she wouldn't be singing at the Met. Buddy.
@Eiswirth1 Well, different people hear in a different way. I can't hear anything metallic in this rendition. Honestly! It's very pleasant to ME! Great sound! Actually, it happens, sometimes we like a somewhat singer and later he or she isn't that impressive to us anymore. Well, I never liked Cecilia Bartoli, but the more I listened to her, the more I hated her. She is THE ONE who actually even worsened her technique and operatic skills! How about her? Not AN! Her looks only helped in beginning..
You miss the point, this wonderful Soprano is unique, her phrasing and her ability to enact the words and music are a treasure. Sarah Brightman? Not. She is more a pop singer and Lyrical singer. Kathleen Battles is a totally different tone. But, do not mistake me. They are all beautiful women songstresses with a true God given talent, unique unto themselves. We should be happy to have them in our time.
I know her sempre libera album, but listen for example Souvenirs ( 2008 ) album. :) Her voice is more getting darker. Sometimes more lyrical but most of the time not.
@bpetii1 mmmm i'm pretty sure she is lyric, i don't think she has what it takes to be a dramatic one, though i think it's kind of hard to put a label on her voice cuz she has pretty much sing everything! (except for Wagner which i'm still waiting for her to do it,i know it's harder but she could do it if she want to) no matter what i love her :D
But her voice is not so for example Sarah Brigthman, Rost Andrea, Kathleen Battlee, etc... but never mind. She's a very good artist, i think. Is she lyric, or dramatic... it doesn't matter. I think, not really lyric, but never mind. She's a very good opera singer. :)
@Maggielicious21 i think she's beetween lyric and dramatic. Her voice is not exactly lyrics one, much more darker , in my opinion she can sing lyrical and dramatical, too. My sing-teacher who was an opera singer told me the same, she's between lyric and dramatic, and an other sing-teacher said it, too :) But it doesn't matter, she's very good. It does matter.
and she's not a coloratura soprano. She has very good high voice. I know a bariton who can sing out the high C. Anna Netrebko is soprano, but she has very good capability and she's very-very skillful , her technique is very good.
I think, she's not coloratura-soprano, her voice is far darker and not so "light", but Anna has very beautiful voice with very good high voice ( in end of the aria is a high ESZ /high C plus/ ), and she's very very good artist. Mein opinion is, she's not absolutely coloratura-soprano, I think, she's dramatic s. But she has coloratur soprano's high.
@bpetii1 the fact that the vioce is dark doesn't mean it can't have coloratura, but indeed she isn't a coloratura soprano XD she is actually a lyric one, still she did a pretty good job on her sempre libera album :)
I think, she isn't a lyric soprano, she's a dramatic one. ( I learn singing) . She can have coloratura but sometimes she can't not as a coloratura soprano, not so easily :)
But I like her very much, her voice, her diction, her personality.. She's my favourite opera singer. :)
has anyone listen to her E strano-follie follie-sempre libera from her Sempre Libera recording?? . . . i hadn't really payed attention to that record up until yesterday and i was totally amazed. . . i'm a fan of her and i have almost all of her CD's but i'm still objective and Sempre Libera is awsome
@MrGarywinner I ALSO DISLIKED MUCH OF WHAT HAMMER SAID, PARTICULARY ABOUT NETREBKO SON HOWEVER THIS FILAREDO GUY HAS MUCH A COURT CASE WITH HIS LIBEL OF CALLAS.
Hi folks, I'm still around!!! There is good news! I send every bad comment at management of Anna Netrebko since 4 weeks. The lawyers from Anna bring in an action against HAMMER/HATENETTEBKO and all the faked IDs. Let him write against Anna and her son Tiago! :-)) It will come expensive and the damages action too. Please send copies from bad comments at the management from Anna Netrebko. The contact is: worldwideweb-annanetrebko-com-contact
@belmanotre THANKS FOR ADMITTING WHAT CALLAS FANS HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN, YOU CANNOT ELEVATE NETREBKO BY INSULTING CALLAS. CALLAS WILL CONTINUE TO DOMINATE OPERA FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER CENTURY.
Please, someone stop the spread of Annoushka's ASS ODOR!!! This girl is just so bad, it's disgusting. On her latest review of Traviata they said she did poorly, plus there was a " noxious plume " of sulphur gas emanating from her derriere!! Poor Anna , she needs help with her singing and her " odor " problem.
I call upon the community of listeners who enjoy good music of any opera singer female, Mark with a thumbs up if we want hammer55292 go out , and he get out this pages and cancel his account you tube, so this way let them know You Tube Administration and can it cancel and close the accounts Hammer55292 & Co.
@belledenuit21 Please tell it to hammer=HateNetrebko=Dessayfanatic=striker! It's difficult to concentrate only on this gorgeous singing when you see his nasty comments everywhere in Netrebko's and Callas's videos.
You re more stupid than what I thought. BOLLOCKS it's an English word. Even words in English you don't understand. Also it's a pity I have to mention Callas' name talking about this slut AN. And accacciatura it has to do with the technique. Go and check on internet. I didn't write an word in Greek silly.
I am not going to answer an message from you. I can't stand people like you.
@Kalegoropoulos Now I see just one miserable brasil monkey who ate too bananas and drank recently a lot of banana liquor.Your stupid nick tells for youself. You're moronic stupid monkey- arshole with no argumentations.

One can admire, breathless, the beauty of say the Mona Lisa,
or bring one's magnifying glass to study the signs of its deterioration.
Those who think that analysing opera, works of art is the right focus,
have forgotten how to enjoy opera and other art.
Opera, other art forms, are to immerse oneself in and experience the ecstasy.
If you do not like one, jump straight out try one you can enjoy.
While you argue, I continue to bathe in the delight, exhilaration of performances of Anna and others!

@lanzanut I agree with you. I think these critics think that the only reason she's been popular is because she's so attractive. Now that she's had her baby, she's gained a lot of weight and isn't as attractive, but she's still selling out crowds at the Met. She does so because she can really sing.

Anna already shut up them forever.
ad80ad 1 year ago
@numetutelare

Metallic? How crazy you want to be? There is no metallic in Anna's voice, plus you refer to the soundsystem of your pc. Stupid mistake.
Anna Netrebko undoubtly is one of the best performers of this moment!
zzp1 1 year ago 26
@zzp1 dude, you're right there, she has no "metallic" characteristic in her voice, but I must tell you, there is a certain feature thats ome people have (Maria Callas was a soprano that was said to have such a metallic voice...is nothing wrong, is nothing but a simple characteristic of the voice)...I've been told to have metallic voice too, so I must say, please if you don't understand a certain concept in singing, don't say it is stupid, things tend to turn against ignorance...
lateralex90 8 months ago
She's very beautiful, but her voice is far too metallic-sounding for my ear. She can make an excruciatingly ugly sound followed by a beautiful one. Her vibrato is too wide at the top for such a young singer, and her coloratura is labored. This is not a great performance. If she didn't look like she does I don't think she'd be so popular.
If you want to hear an exquisite version of this great aria listen to any of Sutherland's from the 60's; there's no comparison.
Eiswirth1 1 year ago
@Eiswirth1 Wow! "Excuciatingly ugly sound followed by a beautiful one"! Perhaps you just have a headache which distorts your hearing and can't appreciate what is really BEAUTIFUL! I guess you should just have a good rest instead of writing this nonsense! And also check your ears. Of course, AN can just be not "your" voice, but in this case it's more honest just to admit it than to make up all this stuff: vibrato, etc! AN is beautiful, but she is a GREAT SINGER! Really ugly sound is BARTOLI's!
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce You're the one who should have their ears checked. I was never impressed by her singing from day one, and that rendition of "Sempre Libera" is not pretty. This is my honest opinion. She certainly doesn't belong on the same level as Callas or Sutherland.
Eiswirth1 1 year ago
@Eiswirth1 I only mentioned that your ears should be checked as you (NOT me!) use TOO strong words for the occasion - "EXCRUCIATINGLY UGLY SOUND"! OK, you don't like Netrebko's interpretation. It's not the end of the world! Tastes differ. It's impossible that EVERYBODY likes a particulare, even the greastest of artists! But what's so UGLY here? Nobody sounds so hysterical as you do! Perhaps your ears are TOO sensitive to ANY sound at all and need medical attention? Bartoli is less EXCRUCIATING?!
serenaluce 1 year ago
@Eiswirth1 Also, yes, Sutherland is great as e.g. Callas, Tebaldi, Moffo, Caballe.. So what? They are giants of the PAST! Times change and voices change with them. Nobody sings like them anymore! You can't find anything beautiful in the PRESENT? Should opera die if Sutherland doesn't sing? Of course, no comparison! Can you compare Gregory Peck with Brad Pitt? Whom can you compare with Charlie Chaplin? You prefer to live in the past and not to listen to new stars? Then don't say they are all bad!
serenaluce 1 year ago
@serenaluce What difference does it make if a singer is retired or currently singing? It's the voice that matters, and the body of work they produced over the course of a career. And frankly yes, one could compare Gregory Peck to Brad Pitt if they wanted to, because there's a recorded history of their work. I love many current, young singers; why would I not want someone to sing at a very high level of skill and beauty? Your argument makes no sense.
Eiswirth1 1 year ago
@Eiswirth1 It makes huge difference as different times cause different singing! What about modern composers of serious music? They can't write in the same style of music as in the time of e.g. baroque! Schnitke can't be like Handel. Is he much worse? He is just different, and not everybody can understand this kind of music! OK, it's the same repertoire, but Netrebko is just Netrebko and not Callas or Sutherland! She is a NEW STAR! Compare her with singers of OUR time. Any names whom you love?

@madlucia Again you are not objective. I only mentioned Bartoli's singing as MY example of trully METALLIC and UGLY sound! If you compare Netrebko with her and think that Netrebko sounds uglier it's YOUR opinion. But you don't say it. You prefer to call people idiots right away or having monopoly on something.. Also, in my comments I only highlighten SEVERAL important words to make my statement clearer to which points I reply. Show me where I WRITE ALMOST EVERYTHING IN CAPITAL LETTERS as you say
serenaluce 1 year ago
@spqrmor Yes, metallic. That's what I hear. "She's not for my level?" What does that mean? Because I have standards? I liked her when she first became popular, and bought several of her CDs, but the more i listened to her the less I liked what I heard. And she's done nothing to improve her technique. I'll say it again: if she didn't look like a movie star (who sells tickets) she wouldn't be singing at the Met. Buddy.
Eiswirth1 1 year ago
@Eiswirth1 Well, different people hear in a different way. I can't hear anything metallic in this rendition. Honestly! It's very pleasant to ME! Great sound! Actually, it happens, sometimes we like a somewhat singer and later he or she isn't that impressive to us anymore. Well, I never liked Cecilia Bartoli, but the more I listened to her, the more I hated her. She is THE ONE who actually even worsened her technique and operatic skills! How about her? Not AN! Her looks only helped in beginning..

To bpetii1:
You miss the point, this wonderful Soprano is unique, her phrasing and her ability to enact the words and music are a treasure. Sarah Brightman? Not. She is more a pop singer and Lyrical singer. Kathleen Battles is a totally different tone. But, do not mistake me. They are all beautiful women songstresses with a true God given talent, unique unto themselves. We should be happy to have them in our time.

I know her sempre libera album, but listen for example Souvenirs ( 2008 ) album. :) Her voice is more getting darker. Sometimes more lyrical but most of the time not.
Never mind. She's a very-very good artist!:D
bpetii1 1 year ago
@bpetii1 mmmm i'm pretty sure she is lyric, i don't think she has what it takes to be a dramatic one, though i think it's kind of hard to put a label on her voice cuz she has pretty much sing everything! (except for Wagner which i'm still waiting for her to do it,i know it's harder but she could do it if she want to) no matter what i love her :D
oh by the way i'm learning singing too :)
Maggielicious21 1 year ago
@Maggielicious21
bpetii1 1 year ago
@Maggielicious21 i think she's beetween lyric and dramatic. Her voice is not exactly lyrics one, much more darker , in my opinion she can sing lyrical and dramatical, too. My sing-teacher who was an opera singer told me the same, she's between lyric and dramatic, and an other sing-teacher said it, too :) But it doesn't matter, she's very good. It does matter.
bpetii1 7 months ago
and she's not a coloratura soprano. She has very good high voice. I know a bariton who can sing out the high C. Anna Netrebko is soprano, but she has very good capability and she's very-very skillful , her technique is very good.
bpetii1 7 months ago
I think, she's not coloratura-soprano, her voice is far darker and not so "light", but Anna has very beautiful voice with very good high voice ( in end of the aria is a high ESZ /high C plus/ ), and she's very very good artist. Mein opinion is, she's not absolutely coloratura-soprano, I think, she's dramatic s. But she has coloratur soprano's high.
bpetii1 1 year ago
@bpetii1 the fact that the vioce is dark doesn't mean it can't have coloratura, but indeed she isn't a coloratura soprano XD she is actually a lyric one, still she did a pretty good job on her sempre libera album :)
Maggielicious21 1 year ago
@Maggielicious21
I think, she isn't a lyric soprano, she's a dramatic one. ( I learn singing) . She can have coloratura but sometimes she can't not as a coloratura soprano, not so easily :)
But I like her very much, her voice, her diction, her personality.. She's my favourite opera singer. :)
