  • Thank you for not explaining how to connect the cables.

  • What is the first fader for? Turning the lamps on / off?

  • @19Simpsons93 the function of the first fader wil depend entirely on how the channels on your lights are assigned.

  • @groovindj Okay, thx for the fast answer! I ordered some LED lights and a DMX board three days ago, and ur tutorial is made very well for beginners like me. :-)

    Greetings from Switzerland

  • Finally a good address setting video thanks

  • great video. It does explain very well the basics. Thank you

  • Very well explained mate. Excellent tutorial.

  • Wow. Programming the switches is sort of like doing binary applications. :D

  • I'm new to lighting and these videos were very informative, thank you!

  • Thank you

  • prosklep.com/dmxn/dmx.php

  • excellent tutorial, i am new to intelligent lighting so this was very helpful. thank you.

  • K I got it, stop saying the same thing over and over lol I understand that people are dumb but they can just replay the video if they dont get it

  • I liked this

  • Great Information! I learned a lot about how to use the dip switches instead of the LED display. Thanks!

  • Is there a way that I can set up a scene using the method you described, and then set my lights so each fader matches the channel?

For example, say I want all red lights, so I create a scene where my 10 LED Lights are red. Then, can I set up the board so that I can use each of my faders just to dim the corresponding light, as opposed to controlling all of the colors, etc?

  • What controller are you useing please tell me

  • @Superbenjem click the link to the first video.....

  • my light controller doesnt, hold is light ON when i disable my fixure, is this normal or just my Stupid Showtec SM 8/2 controller?

  • @BIGGABANGZ Ik begrijp het niet

  • Thank you for taking the time to share this info it was a really big help!

  • Hallo.

if got 4 Showtec par 56 short led and did not know hou to set the dipswitches untill i saw your video thank's it was a BIG help for me.

Im working with a Showtec led commander and 4 par 56 short led for about four days and is great.....

    Thanks again

  • @Streetwave18 The dipswitch answer to these lights are as follows:

KEY: Light Number, Dip Switch Combination

    1 = 1

    2 = 1 & 5

    3 = 1 & 6

    4 = 1,5 & 6

  • Hi again for got to add in the booklet it said to set dipswitch 10 11 12 to off theunit is in dmx mode .Also the dmx channels may be set by dipswitches 1 to 9, in the range of DMX channel 1 to 507 .Dipswitch 1 is the first channel , dipswitch 9 is channel 256

  • @Streetwave18, did you watch the first video?

If you still don't understand, there are lots of web sites with DIP switch calculators that show you exactly how to set them.

  • HI groovindj hope you can hep ? i have a stairville DMX master I and 4 par 64s LED with 12 switches on the back ,these are stairville as well, I have read the booklet and watched your vid and i am lost big time can you help kind regards Darren

  • simple binary

  • can i use a dmx controller on a fog machine?

  • @TheEd500, if the fog machine has a DMX input.

  • Awesome, thank you! I watched both parts and as a novice in your field, I feel extremely informed.

  • I'm glad they brought out LED Displays replacing most of the dip switch technique haha :P

  • thnx for this video that realy help me out keet it up

  • rhnx dude ur video realy help me out to seperate my two phar led 64 from my dmx keep it up

  • what you say right on the beginning is binary, so if you don't know how to convert decimal to binary, just google for some website that does that ;)

  • aaah im lost!!

i need some hands on experience!!

  • you show the first two par but you did not show the other two: please show the hole set thank you

  • What make is the mixer??

  • @Ugrillo93, there is no mixer in this video, it's a lighting controller.

  • What is this controller called?

  • @iamCamCodrummer, watch the first video! You'll see the name of the controller on the front of the manual...

  • If I enable dip switches 1 + 4 is that Chanel 9?, It works as fixture 2 on my controller but just making sure I've got it!

Good Vid by the way, spot on cheers.

  • great work mate your number 1

  • what kind of lights are you using

  • @01Carmaster, they're called LED PAR cans. A traditional PAR can, as used in theater, stage and TV, would have a large glass high wattage lamp called a parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR). The new LED based ones replace that lamp with LEDS but in the same housing, so they're still called PAR cans although the PAR is gone. :-)

  • This helped me heaps, thanks for the vids mate, cheers.

  • I hope you are a professional teacher because you just made an incredibly difficult subject........actually quite understandable! Your place in heaven is now secure!! THANK -YOU VERY MUCH!!!! cheers to you my friend!!!

  • very useful information for beginners .Thanks lot

  • perfect introduction thanks a lot for it

  • if you turn off the dmx, scenes will be deleted?

  • @videoboygeorge, it works like a computer - if you create something, you have to save it.

  • @groovindj well, i already program all my lights on scenes, what do i do? just turn it off? or do i need to save it? how? thanks for answering.

  • @videoboygeorge, you need to read the manual that came with your controller. That will tell you how your controller works.

I do not know which controller you have, so I cannot instruct you.

  • Very nice video.

    And I have a question.

Can you only use the red, green and blue colors? Or does fader 1 for example also give a color.

  • @FlightSimPro5, most LED PAR cans like these will have a mixture of red green and blue LEDs, each controlled by a fader. To create other colours, you simply mix the three levels. So having all three up creates white and so on.

Some lights use RGB tri-colour LEDs, which have all three colours inside one LED housing, but they tend to be more expensive.

  • @groovindj Ok thanks for your reaction.

  • Awesome. Very thorough. Next vid - How to control via midi so that a keyboard can trigger a whole song light program. Is this possible? Thanks anyhow groovindj.

    J

  • @jaymcinney, it depends on the controller but yes - on some you can trigger a sequence from a MIDI note.

  • Awesome videos. Very useful and extremeley thorough. Cheers. Would love you ti bring out a part 3 to show how a midi device ie - keyboard can operate a dmx controller so a midi signal can trigger a song light program... Is this possible anyway?

    Thanks again

    J

  • thnx this vid realy learnt me stuff

  • Basicaly binary adressing your using?

  • Yes

  • Nice, i'm 13 and i started learning about a year ago, But now i run LX and design LX for show's at school

  • I have two different lights from different manufactures with different color slider mapping. Do I create a scene for each light? And, when I turn off the channel 1 button, light 1 goes off. Is this a function of the controller or do I have a dip switch wrong?

  • Replied by mail.

  • what happens if you don't use 4 of the sequence buttons

  • You have 4 scenes instead of 8! If you put those into a chase, the chase will repeat quicker!

  • my par cans have a 'Function' section, what should i set that to?

  • I don't know - I'm not a mind reader!

First, I don't know what PAR cans you have. Second, if you read the instruction manual, it should tell you how they work.

  • explaining lights can be so confusing! hehe, i just played around with the desk and learnt that way :) oh btw i love the way your camera defracts the light :) they should use defraction more in lighting, its a cool effect

  • Thanks... it really help me to figure out my setup

    DJ Ruco

  • thanks for posting the two videos!! they helped me sort out my addressing problem. excellent stuff!!!

  • I set up my new lights for the first time tonight and was really confused until I ran across your two videos. Thanks, I learned several important things by watching them!!

  • No problem. It's one of those things where, once you get it, you wonder why it took you so long!

  • Hi Groovindj,

Great video. Helps me alot. I've got the Showtec Scanmaster 1 and 4 led Pars. (pas56) One thing went wrong. If I want to make a scene, and put my first Par to Red, push out the scanbutton, and push the fader, that Par, where I put out the button, stil reacts on the fader. So, to make scene of different colors wont be possible. Mabey you know what I did wrong? Thanks alot.

    Regards, Rooster

  • I guess you have more than one light on the same DMX channel, or a channel that is controlled by the same scan button.

Make sure the channels you use are set far enough apart so that the lights are controlled through different scan buttons.

  • Thanks, its solved. I fotgot to push the Record button. Its working and I made a couple of scenes. While playing a scene, that scene can't be dimmed. With black out it can be dimmed at once but not a slow dimming.

  • hi groovindj,

I have been looking for ages on the internet to try to understand how dmx controllers and LED par lights can be used together. I was wondering if you could help me with what i need. I need 4 RGB led lights and a controller.

What products should i get to have the lights colour change and turn on/off automatically, but the dj can select dimming, speeds, etc.

  • If I understand correctly, if I have a par 64 that uses DMX channels 1 thru 6 on scanner button 1, then channels 7 thru 16 are unused and available to use with another 6 channel par 64 for example with a starting address of 9. This still allows for individual control of each fixture while minimizing wasted DMX channels. Is this correct? If so, can you recommend why this might be a bad/good practice.

  • Let me think - er, yes you are correct. Just bear in mind that there are only 8 faders, so you would have to switch 'level' in order to use them as faders 9-16.

  • You are a gift to mankind...With a light show! Thanks for the great video and answering my question. Cheers.

  • Hi I have just watched your video again as I now have 4 starville Par 64s just like the ones in this video but I am greatly struggling with the last 2 lights par 3 and 4 could you tell me what dip switches need to be up on par 3 and on par 4 Many thanks.

    Alex

  • Hi Alex. The answer will depend on how many DMX channels the PAR64s have, and which controller you're using. Also, do you want all the lights to do the same, or for each to be different?

  • @1986AEF hI i know its over a year ago but how did you set your dipswitches. I have 4 stairville leds 64s and a stairville master 1 controller many thanks

  • hi, great videos, im just starting to try and get my head around DMX and i think im starting to get there. With the controller you have, i see you have 12 buttons to select the lights. So, are you limited to connecting only 12 lights to it?

    thanks

  • No, you can connect as many lights as you like - same with any DMX controller. The limitation is with the number of channels it can handle, compared to how many lights need INDIVIDUAL control.

  • Thanks a lot!

I got a mixer with a probably machine-translated manual telling me absolutely nothing. I agree that this is a new language.

Funny, I figured a bit out, but you certainly cleared a lot up! Thank you.

    - Music teacher...

  • thanks for doing this video. i have just bought one of these little buggers and with all the sliders and multi functional aspects it would be very hard, even just reading the manual, to figure out how to make this work. i am planning on using this to control strobes and lasers via midi notes, which will control scenes. i hope it works! thanks

  • hello friend. I have a dmx LC2412. with whom I want. how can. connect one. spin master 3. and a mojo moon 2. but not how to do it, if you know you can help me?

  • hey friend very good video, I watch a EUROLIGHT LC2412 control which is not good if I have a spin master and a mojomoon 2 make me want to work with this team but not if anyone can help me step by step with tene to do that I would appreciate thank you very much

  • I do not understand.

  • Thanks very much for this video!! It's fantastic, I'm thinking of getting one of these as I have found a website that still stocks them even though they have been discontinued... Next to the "scanner 7" button is that a fog machine control button?

  • I just got two scanners that came with a controller, I am glad!--You made this vid thanks as It so good to learn the way DMX works, Its so much easier for me to learn from hearing and seeing! Thanks!

  • do you know what dmx controllers are£40 pls i need to get one

  • Never buy the cheapest of anything! It's best to go for something in the middle of the price range. You can get a controller similar to mine for around £70. The £40 one will be very basic, with no programming ability.

  • hey on a english keyboard are the $ signs pound signs?

  • how much is a dmx controller?

  • Cheapest is around £40 but they go up to thousands.

  • so what connections do u need in order to use a dmx controller with main powerd lights?

  • A DMX connection and a mains connection.

  • can u use main power lights with a dmx controller ?

  • Yes, DMX is only what controls the light. The power can come from mains, battery or whatever and is separate from the DMX signal.

  • i have the d2 also (:

  • Thnx man You Pwn ;-)

  • Ouch my head.... It sounds so complex compared to sound equipment.. i'm sure i'll learn..

  • sorry that how to make a roller coaster on (rct3) i didn't meen to put it on there please take it off groovindj

  • Thanks for these videos. I have been banging my head against a brick wall trying to sort DMX out. The manuals totally confused me

  • Nice video,

the only thing I wanna to see in an other video is how to set up the lamps. Which cable in witch one. I'm not sure If I understand that good. One cable from your dimmer into led 1 then from led 1 to 2 from 2 to 3 from 3 to 4 and from 4 into the dimmer? Is that right?

  • It doesn't matter which order the lights are in, as long as the cable goes in a chain from one to the other, and doesn't make a loop.

It does help to know which lights are on which channels though, so keeping them in some sort of order is sensible.

  • So it is from dimmer to led 1 from led 1 to 2 from 2 tot 3 en from 3 to 4.

    Oke thank you!

  • Hey groovin Dj thnx for the info and it will help me wen i get my led light fixtures

  • Hi Groovin DJ,

What is the unit underneath the DMX Control board, is it connected ?

  • That's a Numark D2 Director. It's an MP3 player. I made three videos on it ages ago.

It's connected (to my audio system) but it's not related in any way to the DMX controller.

  • hmmm, it seems easier than I thought. I had one question though. Does a dmx 512 controller require any cords to send the signals through, or for the lights to receive the signals, or is it wireless?

  • You can get wireless DMX but it's fairly new and not cheap. Most people simply use normal three pin XLR DMX cables (although the official standard is five pin XLR).

  • not a bad job, spends way to much time on things he's already explained, and their called instruments.good tutorial though!

  • Not a bad comment, but did not realise that "he" is me, and that "their" should be spelled "they're".

  • lol too complex for me i think ill just try and get some sound to light ones

  • hey when you have it on fixture one and you set the lights how you want them and then turn the buton off and the lights stay on but mine dont how do i fix this

  • What DMX controller do you have? They work in slightly different ways depending on who made them. I only have experience of my controller.

  • i have the chauvet dmx-70

  • and remember. practice and enjoy.

  • When you say "set" do you mean write them or save them?

  • do you have also scanners?

and can you lern us how dat works?

  • Can u show us how to program a joystick or somthing like that?

    Thnx

  • Take a look at the DMX videos by briansredd which follow on from mine.

  • can this be for inteligent lighting? such as djspot250,,,,, ect.

  • Yes, it can be used to control any light that has DMX. The DMX/Y that I use has controls for pan and tilt so that you can control the position of moving heads.

  • so confuzed !! lol but good teaching !!

  • How do you connect 4 lights to only 1 port from your DMX mixer?

  • You connect them in a chain. You can see each light has an input and an output. Out from the controller, in to the 1st light. Out of the 1st light into the 2nd, and so on.

  • This is great. Very good teacher. Cj

  • great video thanks, can you show us how to hook up the lights as well as of master and slave and so on? thanks a lot

  • what controller are you using?

  • Transcension DMX/Y as seen in video part 1

  • Thanks. You help a lot.The only bad thing with these lamp is a bit smaller output, but all other specs.like lifetime, colourmixing and the most:power consumption makes us a good deal of buying that. The only problem is money course our eurolite par 64 rgb led 10mm models costs 115 eur and you need at least 8 of them.Good instructions, keep on

  • fantastic! try explaining scans and such in your next video

  • you are very good

    thanks

i'm 14 and i'm very intrested in theatre lighting and all that

    and the chases and stuff

our school has just got a new theatre buildling and they have a zero88 FROG and i'm the Offical lighting man for that lol

and i programe all the chases and scenes on that , some stuff manualy but i find it all really fun and i enjoy it! keep thsese type of things posted thanks alot :D

  • Hi, we need to get in contact. Im 15, And bassically do what you do, but on a larger scale, Example concerts etc. Whats Your Msn? Ollie

  • Hi, im 16 and interested in lighting. my school is really crap and only has a very mis-matched collrction of par cans, so im not pert of their lighting 'team'. i wanna get 2 chauvet intimidators 2.0 and a usb DMX for my party in march. thanks

  • Comment removed

  • I've not noticed any problems, and have programmed lots of scenes, banks and chases. Do you have exactly the same controller?

  • Comment removed

  • what LEDs are those? Controller? Do you like them?

  • They are Stairville LED PAR64s from Thomann in Germany. I am happy with them. Much more versatile than using filters in front of filament lamps.

  • Looking forward to part 3!

  • What should be in part 3?

  • I dunno, do you have Skype? We could discuss it.

  • Perhabs some scans? using the moving wheels?

  • There is 10 types of people. Those who understand binary and those who don't. Great video.

  • hahaha i want a binary watch.

  • hi how much was that controller were from nd will it work on dynamo?

  • There are many variations of this controller from different companies. You can get a clone from Thomann in Germany for under £80. It will control any standard DMX lighting fixture.

  • You can get that type of OEM controler for under 200.00. My first DMX controler was of this type, it wasn't very good. Then again the new one I just bought for ~$2,000.00 isn't turning out to be much better as of yet.

  • good information, explained very clearly

  • A+ Video

  • A brilliant set of videos. Loved the end :D

  • Another Beautiful Video! This is GREAT information. Thank you so much :)
