@groovindj Okay, thx for the fast answer! I ordered some LED lights and a DMX board three days ago, and ur tutorial is made very well for beginners like me. :-)
Is there a way that I can set up a scene using the method you described, and then set my lights so each fader matches the channel?
For example, say I want all red lights, so I create a scene where my 10 LED Lights are red. Then, can I set up the board so that I can use each of my faders just to dim the corresponding light, as opposed to controlling all of the colors, etc?
Hi again for got to add in the booklet it said to set dipswitch 10 11 12 to off theunit is in dmx mode .Also the dmx channels may be set by dipswitches 1 to 9, in the range of DMX channel 1 to 507 .Dipswitch 1 is the first channel , dipswitch 9 is channel 256
HI groovindj hope you can hep ? i have a stairville DMX master I and 4 par 64s LED with 12 switches on the back ,these are stairville as well, I have read the booklet and watched your vid and i am lost big time can you help kind regards Darren
@01Carmaster, they're called LED PAR cans. A traditional PAR can, as used in theater, stage and TV, would have a large glass high wattage lamp called a parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR). The new LED based ones replace that lamp with LEDS but in the same housing, so they're still called PAR cans although the PAR is gone. :-)
I hope you are a professional teacher because you just made an incredibly difficult subject........actually quite understandable! Your place in heaven is now secure!! THANK -YOU VERY MUCH!!!! cheers to you my friend!!!
@FlightSimPro5, most LED PAR cans like these will have a mixture of red green and blue LEDs, each controlled by a fader. To create other colours, you simply mix the three levels. So having all three up creates white and so on.
Some lights use RGB tri-colour LEDs, which have all three colours inside one LED housing, but they tend to be more expensive.
Awesome. Very thorough. Next vid - How to control via midi so that a keyboard can trigger a whole song light program. Is this possible? Thanks anyhow groovindj.
Awesome videos. Very useful and extremeley thorough. Cheers. Would love you ti bring out a part 3 to show how a midi device ie - keyboard can operate a dmx controller so a midi signal can trigger a song light program... Is this possible anyway?
I have two different lights from different manufactures with different color slider mapping. Do I create a scene for each light? And, when I turn off the channel 1 button, light 1 goes off. Is this a function of the controller or do I have a dip switch wrong?
explaining lights can be so confusing! hehe, i just played around with the desk and learnt that way :) oh btw i love the way your camera defracts the light :) they should use defraction more in lighting, its a cool effect
I set up my new lights for the first time tonight and was really confused until I ran across your two videos. Thanks, I learned several important things by watching them!!
Great video. Helps me alot. I've got the Showtec Scanmaster 1 and 4 led Pars. (pas56) One thing went wrong. If I want to make a scene, and put my first Par to Red, push out the scanbutton, and push the fader, that Par, where I put out the button, stil reacts on the fader. So, to make scene of different colors wont be possible. Mabey you know what I did wrong? Thanks alot.
Thanks, its solved. I fotgot to push the Record button. Its working and I made a couple of scenes. While playing a scene, that scene can't be dimmed. With black out it can be dimmed at once but not a slow dimming.
I have been looking for ages on the internet to try to understand how dmx controllers and LED par lights can be used together. I was wondering if you could help me with what i need. I need 4 RGB led lights and a controller.
What products should i get to have the lights colour change and turn on/off automatically, but the dj can select dimming, speeds, etc.
If I understand correctly, if I have a par 64 that uses DMX channels 1 thru 6 on scanner button 1, then channels 7 thru 16 are unused and available to use with another 6 channel par 64 for example with a starting address of 9. This still allows for individual control of each fixture while minimizing wasted DMX channels. Is this correct? If so, can you recommend why this might be a bad/good practice.
Let me think - er, yes you are correct. Just bear in mind that there are only 8 faders, so you would have to switch 'level' in order to use them as faders 9-16.
Hi I have just watched your video again as I now have 4 starville Par 64s just like the ones in this video but I am greatly struggling with the last 2 lights par 3 and 4 could you tell me what dip switches need to be up on par 3 and on par 4 Many thanks.
Hi Alex. The answer will depend on how many DMX channels the PAR64s have, and which controller you're using. Also, do you want all the lights to do the same, or for each to be different?
@1986AEF hI i know its over a year ago but how did you set your dipswitches. I have 4 stairville leds 64s and a stairville master 1 controller many thanks
hi, great videos, im just starting to try and get my head around DMX and i think im starting to get there. With the controller you have, i see you have 12 buttons to select the lights. So, are you limited to connecting only 12 lights to it?
No, you can connect as many lights as you like - same with any DMX controller. The limitation is with the number of channels it can handle, compared to how many lights need INDIVIDUAL control.
thanks for doing this video. i have just bought one of these little buggers and with all the sliders and multi functional aspects it would be very hard, even just reading the manual, to figure out how to make this work. i am planning on using this to control strobes and lasers via midi notes, which will control scenes. i hope it works! thanks
hello friend. I have a dmx LC2412. with whom I want. how can. connect one. spin master 3. and a mojo moon 2. but not how to do it, if you know you can help me?
hey friend very good video, I watch a EUROLIGHT LC2412 control which is not good if I have a spin master and a mojomoon 2 make me want to work with this team but not if anyone can help me step by step with tene to do that I would appreciate thank you very much
Thanks very much for this video!! It's fantastic, I'm thinking of getting one of these as I have found a website that still stocks them even though they have been discontinued... Next to the "scanner 7" button is that a fog machine control button?
I just got two scanners that came with a controller, I am glad!--You made this vid thanks as It so good to learn the way DMX works, Its so much easier for me to learn from hearing and seeing! Thanks!
Never buy the cheapest of anything! It's best to go for something in the middle of the price range. You can get a controller similar to mine for around £70. The £40 one will be very basic, with no programming ability.
the only thing I wanna to see in an other video is how to set up the lamps. Which cable in witch one. I'm not sure If I understand that good. One cable from your dimmer into led 1 then from led 1 to 2 from 2 to 3 from 3 to 4 and from 4 into the dimmer? Is that right?
hmmm, it seems easier than I thought. I had one question though. Does a dmx 512 controller require any cords to send the signals through, or for the lights to receive the signals, or is it wireless?
You can get wireless DMX but it's fairly new and not cheap. Most people simply use normal three pin XLR DMX cables (although the official standard is five pin XLR).
hey when you have it on fixture one and you set the lights how you want them and then turn the buton off and the lights stay on but mine dont how do i fix this
Yes, it can be used to control any light that has DMX. The DMX/Y that I use has controls for pan and tilt so that you can control the position of moving heads.
You connect them in a chain. You can see each light has an input and an output. Out from the controller, in to the 1st light. Out of the 1st light into the 2nd, and so on.
Thanks. You help a lot.The only bad thing with these lamp is a bit smaller output, but all other specs.like lifetime, colourmixing and the most:power consumption makes us a good deal of buying that. The only problem is money course our eurolite par 64 rgb led 10mm models costs 115 eur and you need at least 8 of them.Good instructions, keep on
i'm 14 and i'm very intrested in theatre lighting and all that
and the chases and stuff
our school has just got a new theatre buildling and they have a zero88 FROG and i'm the Offical lighting man for that lol
and i programe all the chases and scenes on that , some stuff manualy but i find it all really fun and i enjoy it! keep thsese type of things posted thanks alot :D
Hi, im 16 and interested in lighting. my school is really crap and only has a very mis-matched collrction of par cans, so im not pert of their lighting 'team'. i wanna get 2 chauvet intimidators 2.0 and a usb DMX for my party in march. thanks
There are many variations of this controller from different companies. You can get a clone from Thomann in Germany for under £80. It will control any standard DMX lighting fixture.
You can get that type of OEM controler for under 200.00. My first DMX controler was of this type, it wasn't very good. Then again the new one I just bought for ~$2,000.00 isn't turning out to be much better as of yet.

KomieDeon 3 years ago
It doesn't matter which order the lights are in, as long as the cable goes in a chain from one to the other, and doesn't make a loop.
It does help to know which lights are on which channels though, so keeping them in some sort of order is sensible.

I've not noticed any problems, and have programmed lots of scenes, banks and chases. Do you have exactly the same controller?

what LEDs are those? Controller? Do you like them?
justinoverland 4 years ago
They are Stairville LED PAR64s from Thomann in Germany. I am happy with them. Much more versatile than using filters in front of filament lamps.

hi how much was that controller were from nd will it work on dynamo?
gjdjdisco 4 years ago
There are many variations of this controller from different companies. You can get a clone from Thomann in Germany for under £80. It will control any standard DMX lighting fixture.

You can get that type of OEM controler for under 200.00. My first DMX controler was of this type, it wasn't very good. Then again the new one I just bought for ~$2,000.00 isn't turning out to be much better as of yet.
