I know what you mean, Brian. Once God finally got through to me, I found that Jesus is not only able to save me from eternal hell, but he also lifted me straight away out of the living hell I had created for myself in my lustful quest for sex, drugs and rock and roll. God Bless.
As for the "horns" thing, you're not going to get my ire by mocking Jesus with a reference to organized religion's cartoon character devil. In fact, what you don't realize about the very real devil (aka serpent, aka satan, aka lucifer). is that he appears as magnificently beautiful and tempting (i.e. immoral sex, drugs, etc.).
Don't worry, jhl, I don't feel offended. You seem to be a nice person, and, interestingly enough, your beliefs and thought pattern are strikingly similar to what I used to think/believe.
You see, I didn't grow up indoctrinated into a religion. In fact, I went through the gamut of beliefs/theories in my teens and twenties. I had eventually settled on my own concoction of new ageism and secular humanism, when, in my mid-thirties, I had a biblically supernatural experience which changed my life forever ...
... all I can say now is that I KNOW that Jesus is the truth, the way and the life, and it was the Spirit of God that convinced me of this (no, I didn't attend a church crusade or anything of the sort - this was personal and sans human intervention). I also know that I cannot make you or anyone else believe ...

I can only hope that the messages I'm given to preach will cause people to think. jhl, my hope and prayer for you is that you will at least keep your mind open and think about the possibility that there is a creator God and that he has a purpose and plan for his creation. I think he believed he was and therefore did what he did.
I think he was a good and kind man.
But I don't think he was closer to God than you or me.
