have you never heard of soft spoken tough guys in real life? mike tyson? and many movie characters did not constantly shout as if they had throat cancer. to be tough, is in your actions, not the way you talk. goku is the greatest hero in anime for this reason. he is naive and innocent but at the same time, that innocence is the reason he will never understand anything BUT fighting for his friends.

I would agree, the American soundtrack was better because it gave it more a sense of a good scene for each part. Don't get me wrong, the Japanese was good and all for its time, but the American soundtrack made it better. IMO.
His songs are still amazing and the songs that came on mine as the default were the original japanese songs which were trash and i changed the settings to american music which is way better

@inFame7117 he made the original manga wich the anime closely follows. the dialogue is the same, the animation follows the manga fights with filler added in, and he also personally selected some of the voice actors. its akira's story and english dub had gotten so arrogant that they thought thye could completely change the dialogue and characters. its a page 1 rewrite and they got everything wrong. yeah the basic story is the same but the dialogue is too altered for it to even make sense.

Funi DB came out in the early 2000's in America and the music did not appeal to American fans. They changed it to fit an American audience. The electronic, rock style is VERY popular in America and MOST American DBZ fans like Bruce's score more than the Jap score and HORRIBLE voice acting that did not fit the characters at all.

They used female voice actors for male characters who didn't even TRY to sound masculine. Vegeta and Piccolo's voices where far too soft and did not fit their tough, intense persona portrayed in the manga. If you ask me, the American dub and music did a hell lot better than the Japanese, who fucked up.

His "soft" emotions where subtle, but Vegeta has always had extreme anger issues and open fury. He's Goku's opposite in every way. They didn't sound like they had throat problems or like old man. They just had deep voices and both are aliens who LOOK like they would have deep, commanding emotions.

I would agree, the American soundtrack was better because it gave it more a sense of a good scene for each part. Don't get me wrong, the Japanese was good and all for its time, but the American soundtrack made it better. IMO.

@054martinm Sorry, but the Japanese voice actors where mediocre and did NOT match the characters as good as funimation. Goku's voice was a joke. Last time I checked, he was a grown man, not some 12 year old girl. The character personalities where no different and the story was NO different. Dialog was changed to fit english translation, that's all. And they spat in Akira's face? Akira wasn't the one developing the show. He had little to do with it and wasn't directly involved in it.

@inFame7117 the dialogue was completely changed beyond repair. you have such english dub errors as over 9000, bardock was a scientist, vegeta was made evil by freeza, dr gero was the leader of red ribbon army, goku thinks he can beat buucolo, kid buu is twice as strong as super buu, krillin says mondo cool, goku says hammer time, freeza is turned into a comedic old woman constantly cracking jokes. these changes hurt the story. they dont improve it.

@inFame7117 he made the original manga wich the anime closely follows. the dialogue is the same, the animation follows the manga fights with filler added in, and he also personally selected some of the voice actors. its akira's story and english dub had gotten so arrogant that they thought thye could completely change the dialogue and characters. its a page 1 rewrite and they got everything wrong. yeah the basic story is the same but the dialogue is too altered for it to even make sense.

@054martinm And FUNI had EVERY right to change the music. The original music appealed to Japanese fans and was 90's era music. Funi DB came out in the early 2000's in America and the music did not appeal to American fans. They changed it to fit an American audience. The electronic, rock style is VERY popular in America and MOST American DBZ fans like Bruce's score more than the Jap score and HORRIBLE voice acting that did not fit the characters at all.

@054martinm In my opinion and the opinion of others, the Japanese music and audio sucked ass. That happy go-lucky, cheesy instrumental crap did NOT fit a violent, action packed show like DBZ. They used female voice actors for male characters who didn't even TRY to sound masculine. Vegeta and Piccolo's voices where far too soft and did not fit their tough, intense persona portrayed in the manga. If you ask me, the American dub and music did a hell lot better than the Japanese, who fucked up.

Action and violence has always been a focal point and that cheesy, classical music did NOT match. it sounded like it belonged in some shoji anime, not a shonen. That rock music is perfect and is widely more popular in America than that Jap version. On youtube, most DBZ fans HATE the Japanese version and rightfully so.

@inFame7117 a very dark show that doesnt need screeching metal rock to get that point across. its called subtle. nothign about cheesy techno screechy non stop blaring rock music screaming at us "LOOK ITS BADASS AND DARK, SEE HOW BADASS THIS IS! RAWR ROCK THE FUCKIN DRAGON!" is subtle. but classical scores like kikuches know when to have silence and when to have sad music and when to have exciting battle music etc. it was a masterful score.

@inFame7117 but thats the point. making a character TOO masculine was what the dub did. vegeta and piccolo sounded like they had throat problems and constantly yelled. it got fucking annoying. they sound like old men. in japanese they are tough but at the same time retain the class and subtle emotion that those two have. vegeta is not just an angry screaming old man who smokes alot. hes a classy prince who loves to talk trash. i get the feeling you didnt read the manga at all.

@054martinm Actually, Vegeta is a very intense man full of raging emotions and inner turmoil. He has a rough, harsh personality. He's never had "class" or subtle emotions. His "soft" emotions where subtle, but Vegeta has always had extreme anger issues and open fury. He's Goku's opposite in every way. They didn't sound like they had throat problems or like old man. They just had deep voices and both are aliens who LOOK like they would have deep, commanding emotions.

@054martinm Vegeta is the prince of a WARRIOR RACE. The Saiyans were barbarians and lived like barbarians. They weren't elegant and eloquent like Frieza's race. They lived to fight, destroy, and plunder. Nothing more, nothing less. NOTHING about the Saiyans were "regal". He may be a prince, but he's the prince of a barbarian race. He won't act like the royalty of Earth, who are just snobbish rich folks that have never had to get their hands dirty. Sabat's rough, brutish voice fit Vegeta better.

@inFame7117 vegeta WAS elegant and eloquent in android arc. he grew out of the barbarian brutal nature which is why he has no respect for buu. buu fights for no reason and vegeta doesnt believe that. EVERYTHING about saiyan royalty under freeza seemed regal. look at king vegetas outfit and speaking patterns. he demands respect. hes not like the low class grunts he commands. you think every saiyan is like bardock, a brutal grunt killing everything in his path. which isnt the truth.

@054martinm But look at Goku. Goku was nearly 50 at the end of DBZ, yet still sounded like a 12 year old girl. His voice was the most unmatched, horribly placed voice ever. You think I wanna hear his high pitched voice when he transformed? It sounded like nails scrapping against a chalkboard. Sean was a great voice actor for Goku. His voice was soft and gentle, yet could be fierce and powerful at the same time; which was essentially Goku's persona.

He's a grown man who's knows how to get the job done, even if it means killing your enemies. Goku's a warrior, through and through. And NO, I DON'T want to hear his shitty Jap voice. It DID not match his character. That voice belonged to a snot-nosed, obnoxiously loud brat, not a veteran martial artist.

@inFame7117 yes he has. goku is almost always goofy and soft due to his gentle nature. he is still naive and innocent like when he admitted the only reason hes training uub is a rematch. he doesnt care too much for the safety of earth, just a good fight. goku is an alien, and the voice is anything but shitty. masako is an acclaimed actress and is considered irreplaceable as goku in japan. masako never played goku as obnxiously loud.

goku is still assertive and powerful when he needs to be. except its high pitched. like you said they always use voices that arent typical. america loves stereotypes. so goku had to sound like superman.

@054martinm But I'll acknowledge that SOME voice actors fit better. Such as Frieza. His Japanese voice actor was incredible and fit him as a mockingly polite tyrant who regarded everybody as dirt beneath his feet and expendable. However, I still believe the voice actors for Goku, Gohan, Krillin, etc. are just too much for my ears (and other Americans) to take. The Japanese may not mind it, but I don't think Americans are too fond of grown men sounding like squeaky toys.
