I didn't see Alonzo as the villian. Not a victim of his job. The ends justify the means. "It takes a wolf to catch a wolf". Alonzo doesn't hurt any "innocents" only the criminals. Takes money from a low level drug dealer to catch a higher drug dealer. No one complains that these low lifes die. NO ONE. I thought he brought Hoyt in a little too fast. But he had a back up plan for that, Hoyt has drugs in his system. All Hoyt had to do was play ball, that's it.

Alonzo is a great villain - cold, calculating and brutal. And I think it's great that the director wasn't afraid to put a black man into this role: it makes his come-upance in the Jungle all the more satisfying that the good black residents aren't willing to back up a corrupt cop just because of his skin color. What's even better is that nobody kills him: they leave it to the Russki's, the REAL bad guys, to take care of him.
