  • I just LOVE this video!!! And I want my hair like the lady with black hair in the back!

  • this is some david lynch shit right here

  • @plaff990 oddly enough.... i feel the exact same way. o.O' 'Dis shits straight outta Blue Velvet

  • @Multiverse1100 he has a cover of Blue Velvet....

  • L.A.M.E.

  • i like the guy at the start. his jacket is great . this video makes me happy . i love the set up,the stage , the clothes they wear . the piano is great . the backup singers faces. oh yeah and pete drakes awesome skills. wow what a great video. thx very much.

  • Guitars can already speak, no need for a talk box.

  • i have watched this maybe 1000 times . never gets old

  • Thanks for posting this song.....I had heard Pete for many years and often wondered how he was able to achieve the unique sound....just awesome.....I personally apprecitate the effort.......

  • Before Pete Drake, was Alvino Rey doing Singing Guitar and My Bonnie, which can be heard here on Youtube

  • Peter Frampton eat yer heart out... lol

  • Pete Drake used the "talk box" way before Walsh or Frampton.

  • Not really autotuning. More like on the fly tuning. Thanks for the origin of Frampton's talk box.

  • Very cool! Never heard this before...Thanks there, theofirmo for posting it!!

  • sounds like 1st real use of autotune. fantastic

  • sounds like 1st real use of autotune

  • @duttyluke Autotune is completely different to this. Autotune is a correctional tool rather than a creative one. The instrument hes playing here is more like a vocoder synth than autotuning IMO. :)

  • Please comment my new song and let me know what you think. I would appreciate it sooo much!

    Thanks!

  • simply amazing...

  • Pete turned Peter Frampton on to his talk box!

  • @HTVmedia1

Yes he was doing George harrisons "All things must pass " album in the UK and Pete Drake Gave peter Frampton his talk box after the session......Frampton used it for a large part of his career.

  • thanks for reposting

  • Wow never heard of this guy...but man that was some great stuff!

  • @mickeydamon Wow, never heard of the legendary Pete Drake ??

In the 60s he was doing five recording sessions a day,He played on nearly everybodys country stuff and also non country he did Bob Dylans "Nashville skyline" LP, George Harrisons "All things must pass" LP, Joan Baez...in 1966 there was 78 nominated songs for the CMA awards Pete played on 66 of them!

This "talking guitar" was a bit of a gimmick and he has been slated by many steel players for it but he did other truly great things.

  • Just brilliant. Good man.

  • This clip is from a Movie made about Nashville in the 60"s There are lots of Stars on them Hank Jr Porter Webb Pierce and to many to list great thanks.I was there when Pete was inducted into Steel Guitar Hall of fame and talked to him He die less than a year later Thanks

  • Wow, talkboxes go way back. Beautiful playing.

  • Freakin' heck! That's brilliant!

  • If anyone is interested in the marriage of instrument and voice as in this wonderful example, there's a great new book about the history of the vocoder. It's called "How to Wreck a Nice Beach: The Vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop, The Machine Speaks." I couldn't put it down.

Pete Drake used different technology, but the idea was the same.

  • Thank you SubCinemaTV for the information. I have just ordered the DVD ("Second Fiddle To A Steel Guitar").

    Best regards,

    Rip The Reverb...

  • holy crap this is beautiful!

  • A talking guitar!?! What's next, a human killing cyborg? This is the start of a slippery slope to say the least...

  • @geofherman Pete Drake was a pro musician he had to make a dollar, it was his living.

This record sold a million for him in 1964 .......the only steel player to do so , he had vision , knew what the public wanted and delivered.

This was a simple tune with a beguiling sound , nothing technical whatsoever .

Pete Drake the studio session man is legendary, he wasnt as technical as some but he played what people wanted to hear and made more trips to the bank than all the others put together.

  • Did anyone know Pete Drake is from right here in Augusta, Ga.?

My Dad John Hutto knew his Brother ,William Drake, very well. As a kid I remember Dad making trade deals with William. I guess Pete had already moved to Nashville by that time.

He was a real genius inventor and great Steel player.

Thanks for this video, Ray Hutto

  • With all due respect to Pete Drake and Peter Frampton, legends in their own right! Roger Troutman mastered the talkbox and took it to a level that no one else has. I am very astonished at the simplicity of this song and it has become a song that goes into my greatest hits !!! Thanks for posting it!! I really enjoyed it !!

  • Troutman is not using a talkbox, but a Vocoder. Different technology, similar sounds.

  • I've never seen him play his talkbox even though I once owned one of his albums. Thanks for posting this video!

  • so dope

  • mcsunka, if you visit this page again, could I bother you too to help get me in making a copy for me? I will send you my information of how to contact me. I love this song soooo much. Thanks Alot and thank you theofirmo for posting this beautiful song!!!!

  • No one but no one will EVER top Pete Drake. He will always be the best!!!!! I remember when this song first got radio play and I was mesmerized and had to buy it!!! He was the epitome of pedal steel genius!!!!!!

  • @BigDuckKetterer

I have to disagree. You always new when Pete was on a record. He played the same licks over and over. That shivering slide must be on dozens of recordings. Mr. Emmons is THE true PSGenius.

  • Hello theofirmo, Could you tiell me where you got this video from? What show was this? Can this show as well as others be found on videos that can be bought? Any info would be much appreciated.

    Thank you very much,

    Ripthereverb...

  • I am sorry but I don't know. I had the video saved on my computer, but it was first found here. By the way I suggest you all save the videos you love in case they disappear...

  • Seconding the 'save the videos you love in case they disappear' advice. I've had good luck with Youtube Downloader HD, and prior to that, keepvid. Thanks to theofirmo for sharing this.

  • @theofirmo How do you save them?

  • theofirmo, How do you save a video?

    Tks.

  • @ripthereverb Go to IMDB and search for Pete Drake. In the expanded results, there are 2 movies. Hint: its not the first violin, but rather the .... You can then go to dvdpricesearch to find online stores that sell it. Or rent it from Netflix.

  • @ripthereverb This clip is from the 1966 movie "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar". Many of the Grand Ole Opry stars of the day are featured in this film.

  • @ripthereverb This footage is from film

Second Fiddle to Steel Guitar from 1965

  • @ripthereverb It's from the 1966 movie "Second Fiddle to a Steel Guitar". I uploaded the video originally, by the way.

  • Amazing! I love it...

    Thanks for posting.

  • What year is this?

  • Does anyone have any idea where I can find a list of all the songs that Pete Drake used his talking steel guitar in besides his solo work? For example, Roger Miller's Lock Stock and Teardrops.

  • I have all Pete Drake's cds made from vinyl lps - if you would like for me to burn them for you, I'll do it. He recorded for the Smash/Mercury label in the mid-1960s. If you're interested, there is no charge at all, I love to share these outstanding recordings, since they don't have a big following - I was always a fan - let me know!

  • That is a most generous and awesome offer! Can I email you my mailing address? You sure you don't need shipping or anything?

  • Please do - I'll burn them off tomorrow. No need for shipping fees or anything - 'tis the season to be jolly and to share Pete Drake Lps on CD. I like doing stuff like this. . .

  • oh that's amazing, I love seeing this happen from the video I posted :)

  • @mcsunka I have two treasured LIVE Starday LPs of the 39th and 40th anniversaries of the grand ole opry where Pete plays on both albums, His steel on Red Sovines "Giddy up go",Adrian Rolands "exactly like him" and "Stronger than dirt" by Glen Barber is pure genius. I have been a big Pete Drake fan all my life since getting the LP "Nashville Steel guitar" and hearing his tracks " Stargazing" and "Southern Sunday".. For years I wouldnt buy an LP unless Pete was playing steel on it .

  • Hello mcsunka, Is it possible to do the same for me? Love Pete's music and is impossible to find.

How do I get in personal contact with you?

    VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!

    Best regards,

    David (rip the reverb)...

  • @sputnik78 - some of the other songs where Pete played his Talking Steel include Roger Miller''s "But I Love You More", Jim Reeves' "I've Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand", Sheb Wooley's "Blue Guitar" (1964 version), and Ruby Wright's "Billy Broke My Heart At Walgreens, And I Cried All The Way To Sears". He also played it on one of Willy Nelson's songs, but I don't remember which. There might be others, but those are the ones I know of.

  • @phantom1170 That Willie Nelson song you are thinking of is a studio version of "Hello Walls". It's here on the Tube!!

  • Excellent! The first time I ever saw Pete and his talk box was in the movie "That Tennessee beat". He's a cool guy.

  • Those are the anita kerr singers backing up, not a moribund group as described by some.

  • lovely

  • Wonderful to see Pete actually performing. It seems it was was always elusive for him to be seen on any kind of TV appearances.

.... What show was this? ....

Does anyone know if anything is avaialble on video/DVD? Thanks for posting this.

    Regards,

    Rip The Reverb....

  • Awsome!

  • The Framp has nothing on the Drake.

  • Drake did it first!

  • groovy dood
