would someone explain to me the glamour of this? i appreciate a resonating bass voice that can deliver a melody with great presence, this is just random shouting with no melody and not all that low even
@Tonkiainen He is a deacon chanting a prayer as is often done in the Russian Orthodox Church -- chanting the words on a single pitch, rising a half-step with each new line. It is not supposed to have a melody, at least not in the ordinary sense.
He is a basso profondo and a large one too. Just because he isn't going under F#2 and is not showing off his low range means nothing at all. His resonance is hellish, typical of a Russian oktavist, the F#2 sounds central on his voice and he sounds very close to his highest extreme on a D4, and that's enough. Whoever fails to understand that is youtube nincompoop or a frustrated baritone. By the way, whoever thinks profUndo is the correct spelling of profOndo is quite ignorant.
It's not a basso profundo, as we all know, any self respecting singer, sings his whole entire range in every single song they sing, even when it doesn't call for that.
He was a basso profondy without any doubt. He don't show his full range here (as professional singers should hesitate to do unless called for by the composer), but if you search a little on youtube you will find a scene from Ivan the Terrible were he sings a loud B1 and sounding like a octavist.
@OperaBorealis Totally agree. The sound in his voice is a natural, and that of a basso profondo at the volume. It was a jab at the others who think that these singers need to hit a low C every song. I also think some don't realize that this guy is clearly not a high/lyric bass like Samual Ramey, It's definitely deeper and heavier, and thus must be a basso profondo.
I think that, from other videos I have seen this particular basso profundo sing, that he only has the upper range of the basso profundo range. By that assumption, I think that he is still below the basso cantante. In this video, if you happen to listen carefullly, his voice does fill the room. It is hard to judge a performance by an electronic box like a computer. You just have to see it live. otherwise, I like it. I have seen the video over and over again. Don't judge a vocal talent.

This clip doesn't really showcase the low end, but it shows you just how powerful the mid and up registers of a Basso are. Anyone stood next to him would have been deaf!
Is it just me or does this guy seem to go sharper and sharper the longer he holds notes? I think he drifts up through about four keys during the ...incantation or whatever....
I also agree with others:... He may be a basso, ma non profundo.
@mykstor He is doing very well exactly what he is supposed to. Im a Bass & Sub-Deacon in the Russian Orthodox church. The Chant that he is doing is used in different parts of the service. It starts low and increases by half steps. As far as Maxim Mikhaylov goes his low G and F were outstanding. In his profession as an opera singer the Profondo highs are what the emphasis is on. If you Check out Basso Profondo Maxim Mikhailov-Litergical Scenes from Ivan the Terrible. You can here him singing low
Eisenstein was really a genius! He used the voice and mimic of Mikhailov to express the mystic horror; such a voice is literally extended between the underground and Kremlin; this is the Russian power of immortality.
Too right. I shared a sea trip with some Russian singers. In the middle of the night we spent about half an hour trading songs on deck. I was a dead calm night no wind and sea like glass. When they let go the air pulsed and slammed you in the chest and the deck plates shook under your feet.
Not assess the Russian vocal in terms of vocal traditions of European culture. This unique culture, which is based on Russian folk song developed over centuries, when Russia was insulated from Europe (12-16 century). Later Russian vocals took some of the basics of European vocal school, but remained special. And listen to Europeans Mikhailova as unusual as listen to many other cultures of the East
My favorite Tsar would'nt have been Nikolai II, Pyotr Veliki (Peter the Great), but Tsar Alexander II, the Liberator of Serfs and the People of Bulgaria.
I think that from time to time Russia has produced tyrants such as Iosef Wasirionovich Dzhugashvili (Stalin) and Ivan Grozni (Ivan "The Terrible").
One must understand that Russia was an enormous country and that from time to time there arrived leaders who deemed it necessary to use brute force to govern those they perceived to be unruly.
A mastepiece of Historical Epic Film. Eisenstein was genius who influenced number of other film-makers.
I prefer "Ivan the Terrible" to "Alexander Nevsky" in terms of dramatism, psychology and empathy. AN is a great battle movie, still a battle movie. ItT is a drama at its best.
JD Sumner. Yeah. The five decibel double low C monster? Pfft. Gimme a break, without a mic he would be powerless, while any church/opera/whatever singer has to fill the room with his sound.
Honestly, I'm suprised how well the southern gospel guys have people fooled. They literally eat up the mic, guys. A true basso profundo, on the other hand, will literally deafen you in his mid/high range if you are standing next to him. The low notes are no exception, loud and majestic, no need for a mic.
That Book has NOTHING to do with this Fine opera performance. Nothing! I like fruity pebbles when i want something sweet.Neither does that. Stop promoting your own agenda and just comment on the video.
trust me he is a very powerfull profondo!! I have heard his low G!!! he sings it in this same movie, its insane!! he is not using his profondo voice here but he is indeed among the profondi
before arguing you should know one thing. Within the opera you cannot sing your low notes as a basso profondo...it just isn't the place to do that. A church is ideal for low tags... I have no doubt that Maxim Mikhaylov was a basso profondo. We should honour his work instead of arguing over little things:)
all you shit talkers need to shut the fuck up. this dude is way low and he sounds good at the same time. i can hit a note that low, but it sound like Im burping. this guy is incredible.
Then please explain it to an intellect as humble as mine. How is Maxim Mikhaylov not a basso profondo, in your opinion? How do you know how low his voice was? Since you are writing such comments, I assume you are well aware of the fact that Mikhaylov's depth was, and still is, legendary. In which other roles have you heard him?
I think notdeadjustlazy was referring to this clip. This clip is not low enough to be considered profondo. Just this clip. Read his comment again. I agree with him and do know something about the voice. Ufelan, what makes you believe you know something about the voice? Just curious.
I might ask you the same question. I myself believe I know something about the voice because I study singing and spend a lot of time reading about phoniatrics and vocal technique. Besides, Notdeadjustlazy was indeed referring to this clip, describing Mikhaylov as "...just a boring standard round plumbey russian basso.", which left me with the impression that he really doesn't understand the beauty of Mikhaylov's singing or that of russian opera as a whole.
And he also left me with the impression that he doesn't really know what "basso profondo" means and so did you. No offense guys, I really don't want to go through the senseless profondo-or-not-profondo debate (let's not talk about opera as if it were, as another youtuber once wrote, "a d**k measuring contest"), but I just can't help but think you need some more education in the field.
Basso profundo doesn't mean he just sings low notes, massive upper register he demonstrates here is definitely the one of a deep bass, sounds like a volcano! a basso cantate would sound like a tenor on this part...I find this extract very impressive!
be sure to hear the russian basso Ivan Rebroff on one LP he sang low g below low c and an womans high a an octive plus a 5th above middle c ( in falsetto of course) and it all sounded beautiful
Hmm, I suppose it's more just that I have not really heard James Earl Jones voice in such a context. He defenitly had a commanding voice however, and I feel that he would be a powerful singer had he had training. My comment was more referring to the use of his voice, as its I suppose more in what you do, as oppose to your actual ability to do.
