Actually, I think you're wrong about the hope diamond. I think it actually does not fluoresce in UV light, but rather is phosphorescent. This means that AFTER you remove the UV light, the hope will glow. These are driven by two distinct physical processes and are quite separate.
BTW. I love fluorescence in diamonds. It's beautiful.
