iPods are great, what he means are that, in iTunes you can buy single songs, and it's not ok, cuz an album is an entire work of art, not just a single song

@handyguy007 Not only that, but what it really is doing is removing what makes music special. In the 60s and 70s, it was a whole setup to get just one album going, and vinyl only lasted for so many listens, that every single time counted. Now, you can just push a button and have background noise to whatever your life throws at you, and music is no longer special. At least, that's why I hate iPods.

An iPod is only useful for storing massive amounts of music for quick reference (on a car trip, on a bus, chilling when you're out-and-about). I would never consider the quality of iPods (specifically mp3 compression) to be overall positive, but they are handy tools.

I see his point about the ipods, but I freaking love my ipod. I listen to way more music than I did before just because it is so compatible and portable. i can bring it anywhere and plug it into almost anything. I love being able to listen to music through my ipod anywhere I go whether it's in my car or through my stereo(s), or just walking around. They are amazing.

The iPod destruction is a joke, not to mention great PR for Insurgentes, but it is also a commentary on how music has degenerated since vinyl was king. Albums used to be art, and thanks to Steven Wilson and other such artists, they are becoming so again.

To find his albums, how about buying from Burning Shed, which is the official Porcupine Tree store? The biggest advantage in buying from them is that, not only are they less expensive, but more of the profits go to the artists.

Ok, to make this clear. I dont think Steven is against Ipods or Mp3s. Hes against the downloading culture that has been spawned from all this. The people who just download masses of cds, not caring about the artwork or anything else that an artist put their time into making.

I do go out and buy Porcupine Tree on cd because I want the physical copy. But if I don't know where I can get certain albums, I have to resort to downloading them, which is sad...

I have no problem with downloading from iTunes really. I mean yes Id much rather have someone purchase the retail album, but I can understand them having to get it from ITunes because lack of any retailers carrying that cd. Thats especially true if you listen to alot of underground metal, or any music thats not well known. As long as your purchasing the album with money I dont really see a problem. The problem is the people who mass download from torrents.

In his opinion mp3 changes the way of hearing music in a bad way.

You have to listen to a whole album with all your concentration and not only to a single song which you can skip as you like. And iPod e.g. prevents people from hearing music the "right way".

I have all of their albums. FOABP was my first, and it still ties with In Absentia for my favorite PT album. I've always noticed the similarities between the album and my life, but there are also differences. I am not depressed. I'm not a spoiled rich kid; I don't even own a cell phone. It's just that there isn't much else I like to do besides gaming and other computer stuff. I hate meeting and being around people I don't know, so that rules most stuff out.

I like to just stay at home by myself or hang out with a couple friends and play video games. If this makes up for it at all, I write music and would love to do a band, except that none of my friends want to/have the time, and I wouldn't feel comfortable playing with other people, if I could even find them. I'm sort of in a band with a couple people, but my friend that plays guitar doesn't have a sense of timing or rhythm, so you can imagine how hard that is. :D

@jackpaice You have to bear in mind that for all the difficulties it is bringing music, it is also so so SO much easier to get decent exposure with the internet. That does also increase your competition but with regards to that particular aspect it's better off in the long run for publicity.

@sonoflife74 Im 1 year younger than this guy. When I was 12 I had a plastic record player that played 45s. I still have it. Guess what? Those 45s sound like shit!! no matter what machine you play them on. Nostalgia is nice but the ugly truth is ugly. The processes we use to record information are state of the art. All my families early pictures got left in the attic ate up and shit upon by mice. If they were digital that would not have happened.
