I always just stick the pencil up to the line ,place my thumbnail about 1/2 inch back from where the end of the brick is (allowing for both head joints) ,and go ! lol
hold it against the face to the line and draw the curve from one end of the brick to the other.takes a good eye but works.you could pass his wage packet between the line and the centre of the arch.
Well if you cant fit the brick in behind the arch to mark it as suggested by pharoahsoulero,(e.g. in a cavity wall construction) this method is the only one that relies on the craftsmans skills and a measuring tape, but each to their own.
Cheers for your comments Pharoahsoulero, ye different methods work for different people, I teach apprentices so this would be a method I advocate for all types of arches. As a craftsmans skills improve they learn how to use their eye more and thus less measuring and marking is required. Ps only the long cuts need to be curved. Thanks
whilst its great that your showing how to do the measuring wouldnt it have been much quicker and just as accurate in this case to hold the brick in place pressed against the back of the arch ,trace the outline of the extrados onto the brick then cut to shape behind the trace,i find cutting 7mil back gives the best result and a much more accurate joint which follows the extrados better than drawing a freehand curve between your 2 measurements, that said im more tham impressed with your vids
