The Indians shouldn't have let him go....even if his playing ability would have waned, which it didn't ... in SF, he was still one of the best SS in the league. Too bad he can't retire with the Indians jersey. Man, Progressive would go wild if they brought him back for his last year.
@Chavezoid I know this is a super old post, but I couldn't agree more! I finally just read his autobiography & he is one hell of a man & the greatest SS EVER!! We need him back here in Cleveland!
omar will be remembered as an indian but we love him in sf...after all these years the man keeps playing at a high level. Gotta respect what he has done and continues to do.
he is my favorite player ever to play for the tribe. whenever my dad would hit grounders to me when i was little i tried to be just like him. hes the man
Oh, and about Hall of Fame induction ...OF COURSE fisrt ballot ... his stats are better than Ozzie's in ALL categories (even double-plays) and he's second only to Hall of Famer Luis Aparicio who played like in the 40s or something. So MLB hasn't seen anything like Omar for over 50 years! Of course first ballot! and yes, I'm a fan ..but I'm right!
Yes U R Right! You point out some very interesting stats here. Just for the record, LUIS APARICO WAS ALSO FROM VENEZUELA. We Venezuelans are very proud of our players; especially our short stops (David Concepcion, Luis Sojo, Ozzie Guillen, Carlos Guillen, Melvin Mora and many others.)
Hey, wait a minute ..old man omar ... I just checked the stats and Omar, who was gold glove last year, has the fewest errors again THIS YEAR. So that makes him the best shortstop in the league STILL. So cut the old man stuff! You can change it to "magical Omar" or something.
Hey, I saw that game... that catch was IN CRE DI BLE.. BTW, I agree with somebody2185. Omar is not "old man Omar".. Because of age, he is simply not GOD at his position anymore, he's only ONE OF THE BEST (if not the best)IN THE LEAGUE. Oh, but his value as a team leader is skyhigh. With him and Barry you got two future Hall of Famers for the younger Giants to look up to.
I'd say first ballot. His BA is higher than Ozzie's. His fielding Percentage is higher. Fewer errors in more games. All around his stats are better than Ozzie's. He just didn't have an intro or was a face of a team like Ozzie did.
All this "old man Omar" and "fellow senior citizen" stuff isn't right. If he can still do what he just did he deserves respect. There's plenty of younger guys in the league who won't give that kind of effort.
the Best fielding SS EVER
why this isn't a pat phrase like 'Ted Williams is the best hitter ever' is a shame
there's Omar and then there's everyone else

Does anyone have better video of this guy? Possibly the greatest defensive SS of all-time and yet there's not one good video of his defense on here.
