If you come to a complete stop, and the pedestrian doesn't enter the crosswalk, you will assume that they don't actually want to cross. It can be very frustrating when the pedestrian has the right of way, and just stands there waiting for a stopped car to go.
I have this issue when crossing on a cross walk going to college, people do not stop and some even speed up as I am crossing. How scarry is that? OH and PS, I am totally blind and use a cane at the moment but am in progresss of applying for a guide dog.
People who drive in Berkeley are TERRIBLE! They stop for no one. I know the area in question and Berkeley could solve its money problems with tickets alone at the crosswalks.
Yep. If it was you trying to get across the street, you would not be happy. Sure, people think they can just slip by and not be inconvienenced ....it looks more efficient, you got by...but actually, it is better to let people get across safely
Mr. Roberts, I really had a hard time giving this video a 'thumbs up' not because of you and your work but because of what I just saw. The whole time I was watching this video my jaw was laying on the floor, at how hard it was for that woman to get across the road. And notice the one person that stopped for her was a person on a bike and he almost got hit from behind.
This is easily desernable in the West Coast but in the East Coast where there's a lot of trees directly adjacent to the side of the road, you can't see any pedestrians. I went through this same experience on rural Richmond roads, I couldn't stop safely or I'd be impeading traffic, and getting myself into a rear end accident.
all it would take the cops is a few hours a day in verious cross walks around town for a month. along with a lot of news medid coverage both tv and raido.
This is a problem here in Maryland, too. I know an Orientation and Mobility specialist who shot video of a blind pedestrian with a white cane extended into the street who frequently had to wait several minutes until drivers would let him cross. Blind pedestrians and O&M instructors often complain about driver behavior, but no one seems to understand until they see the video.
That poor lady is going to get hit! I agree with the person who said "people are in a hurry to go nowhere" I see it all the time where I live, people rush and nearly hit other people, just to get to the hair salon! but this lady should try carrying an air horn to get people's attention. (I know I would just hit the horn, and step out) first person that hit me, (if I didn't die) would be up shit creek with thier insurance company!~ Me I'd be rich!

I would immediately stop and allow her to cross and if safe I would pull over and help her cross.

people are in such a hurry to go nowhere. they think they're getting somewhere faster by not stopping, only to stop at the next block at a stoplight.

That's a good story, not something that's suprising. I try to stop for peds when they are visible.
Good job by the bicyclist. He almost got rear-ended, though.

@dex123ter
it was a close call too! I hope that BMW driver gets karma...front bumper of that car was only inches away from the bike.

Its funny how the bike fallowed the rules before the cars did. This is a little known, and thought about problem. Thanks for picking up on it.
