Not soul not indie not electro not anything. if you've ever seen him live you would know by the crowd that his appeal is his talent not marketing. Wow.. why don't you all relax! Anyway this use it, give us good vibrations. Try, serge Gainsbourg ( it's not soul) on this site, you don't care if you don't understand !!! taste it
I kind of take offense to the whole white people education comment. While I don't agree with the person's commoment about Jamie Lidell stealing soul, becuase I am a firm believer that anybody can have soul, the fault of their comment is not that black people had soul firt, but soul music is a creation of mostly black pioneers. I am pretty sure white people are not the only ones who came with education,a nd the way you said it was kind of like Education is the white man's game,
Do you know we are in the 21st century, the Age of Reason? The time to grow and let old ways teach and new ways bring us together with our intellect? Who cares who invented what-Alexander Grahamm Bell invented the telephone that everyone uses-he helped us communicate all over the world-no one stole what he created because we all learned from him and benefited. There are more things than this argument to spend energy on. We learn from all cultures and we have to grow-we're all here to stay.
bluecafe22, you're an idiot? Stole soul? The African American community did not claim ownership to soul. That would be like white people saying that black people stole education because white people had it first.
Just because he is white does not mean he doesn't have soul. Hell, he has more soul than most people now, white or black. He is doing what he loves and he is doing it well. You're a freakin' moron and should do the world a favor and take a long walk off a short cliff.
Maybe I'm reading too much into your comment, but I find the line about "black people stealing education" offensive. I understand the point you were trying to make, but maybe if you had made a comparison to another style of music to make you point, it would have been easier to digest.
You shouldn't feel offended by that statement. It was a comparison, albeit an extreme one, that was similar to Bluecafe22.
My point is that "white" people cannot claim education nor can "black" people claim soul music as their own. They are both for the people to enjoy and saying that one stole the other is ludicrous.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
White people didn't have education first, idiot. Did you pull that one out of your ass? That is perhaps the dumbest analogy I have ever heard. Soul is an African American form of music, and this douche has essentially hijacked the form of music while pretending as though what he is doing has absolutely no relationship to the African American community.
Its cool if a white person does soul, but this is (real) soul music dressed up and marketed and Indie Rock. Not cool in, my opinion.
While Soul arose out of the African American community, once you release an art form in to public you no longer retain ownership of it. Music is fluid. The influences that go into creating each individual song are often too numerous to understand. So if music resonates with an Audience then good for the audience and great for the artist. That goes for every style, from "Experimental Icelandic Techno folk Metal" to "Bubble Gum Pop". Rate an artist on their own merits not on their race.
1) I did not make mention of Liddel's race (per se'). I wrote that I do not appreciate his presentation Soul music. Soul is not Indie-Rock or Experimental Techno. From watching this video one is left with the impression that Lidell has simply hijacked soul music.
2) Your firt comment was about "songwriting", not production. On that note, both Van Hunt and Robin Thicke produce their own music. While the same may not be true for Gaye, Mayfield and Hendrix.
You don't own Soul music nor the right to say what is legitimate music or not of any style. if you don't enjoy Jamie Lidell then don't watch his video. i urge you to send me your criteria for legitimate music. what excatly must you do. be born in the 50s? be black? be american? be male? mention the US in one of your songs? i don't understand. what is the difference? its all music. you are the one putting all the labels on it. just listen or don't its up to you. who cares what genre.
Real artists write their own music! I think the people you are referring are singers. Singers generally have somebody else write their songs and music for them.
Personally, I do not listen to a single person who does not write their own music, unless they are exceptional singers. My favorite artists include Marvin Gaye, Jimi Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, Van Hunt, and Robin Thicke (etc). Unless you listen to bubble gum pop, artists will generally write their own songs.
I have to agree with you there. Though I think the remarkable thing about Lidell is that he does all the production on his albums hemself, and it is done to a very high standard. Nothing against any of the people you have mentioned. No one is debating the genius of Gaye, Mayfield and Hendrix. and while Hunt and Thicke are great they have both used used major producers on their albums, while this doesn't detract from their artistry, I believe when an artist does all three, its worth a mention.
as a black girl... i notice that black people have been willingly giving up soul. using repititious robot beats and taking all the soul out of their voices and music to make more money cuz our new thing is "gotta make it, gotta make that money fast".... SOMEONE'S gotta appreciate soul. cant let it die. i love ol' jamie he's in it for the art and love of music!
I did not say anything about the fact that he is white - I really like Robin Thicke and Eric Clapton, theyre white. I just can't stand that this guy is fronting like his music is some kind of alternative style, when it unabashed old school soul!
Its like he stole black music, but does not wants to give credit where credit is due. This guy isnt just barrowing elements of soul This is soul music, straight up!

hello there, im searching for 2 different vids of Lidells "whats the use", sung live for Dutch television..
One, beautifully sung with around his neck a tapedeck or something. The other, a capella with Mocky on guitar.. goosebump shit.
Someone who knows a link or can upload these again. They were taken off.:(
