Is there any advice on composition of djent drumming? Like, as in anything special you focus on when composing drum pieces for a djent band? I'm hopefully going to be joining a rather djenty band, and I've never had to physically push myself beyond the limits of old school thrash metal, and I'm just wanting some basic advice for djent..
You will EASILY become one of the greatest drummers who has ever played. I know it sounds stupid but as a drummer I try and emulate you more than anyone else! I will meet you one day! Oh yes, I will!
Oh my garsh travis! I cannot get over you! I don't see how any drummer, ever, could ever surpass you! People say alex rudinger but no way dude, you are so incredibly technical I can't even begin to say!
I really love watching you jam. I dropped drumming for about 3 yrs and I had 11 years under my belt. I recently got back into it and you are a excellent motivator and teacher. Also I noticed you have your left bass pedal away from your heel, never thought of that.
@Harrysound term coined by Meshuggah, genre of progressive metal semi-popularized by Bulb. The ultra-compressed drop tune sound of guitar distortion can be characterized by the onomatopoeia "djent", though within the context of prog metal the genre is considered an unconventional use of polyrhythms and creative use of drum/melody syncopation so grooves land on the accents in a mind-crushingly brutal way. This is my understanding, somebody correct me if i'm wrong.
@Harrysound originally progressive metal never existed... it was just metal and some dude created different ways to play and eventually it became a genre. Djent is the sound created by the guitar using amps and mid boosted pickups. Djent is basically a more processed, technical sound. the specific sound the guitar makes is "dj dj dj djent" it's a very front pushing sound. and whether or not it's a genre in your eyes many people say it is... eventually it will be known as a genre as well
All the shells sound nice but I don't care for how the cymbals sound with this setup. I'm sure it's a recording thing. But damn this guy can play. This is the Travis drummer people should be listening to. Hint hint.
With this kind of setup, I can't tell if he's a lefty, or maybe he's ambidextrous. And this is one of the most clever and creative drumming I've seen since Danny Carey, especially at 0:18 and 0:59.
you never cease to amaze me man, seriously. especially your work ethic. i wish i had that kind of discipline. anyways, i have a question for you. when you are required to play fast double bass spurts, as is the case in this video, how do you have your bass drum head tuned? tight? loose? medium? if it's loose, how do you manage to achieve such speeds without it coming out all muddy and wattery? anyways, your answer would be greatly appreciated. cheers!
meh, you made this comment so it prompted me to take a look at this drummer. He doesn't have a 1/4 of the technically flawless skill Travis exhibits when he plays. AAL's drummer is OK, but his skill level is not remotely close to Travis'. Sorry, I have to call out ignorance when I see it.
man , i love this djent style.been trying to perfect the art of playing it , must say though , it is pretty hard and one must be very focused as not to miss a single beat
HI , were Djent worldwide we are currently collecting our favourite djent and making videos of them. please check out our page. we are quite new so dont have many videos but please subscribe and we will try and show you new artists as often as we can.
@Olralph I'm talking about technicality. Travis definitely has a better poly rhythm approach. Well its just my opinion but i see more creative thinking in the scope of "over / 16's" and metronomic rhythms.
I really like the sound of that snare and kick, have you added any EQ or compression to this? Also what kind of mics are you using for your Overheads?
i know its cliche but after hearing how well thought out, tech and precise all your (and musicians like your) sessions are, i look at mainstream money giants like gaga and bieber or what-have-you i get upset. its all elementary stuff. cant say its bc its catchy, this is definitely catchy too. i dont get it!
who plays a kit with one floor tom and no racks? lol it's very odd. also, I never expected TRX to sound that good. they just seemed like they'd be one of those little companies that spent all their money on advertising in Drum magazine
