  • so incredible. I have seen it in cinema here. Also "Siegfried" and last weekend "Götterdämmerung". Bryn Terfel is the perfect cast for wotan and Deborah Voigt the perfect Brünhilde. Siegfried was also brilliant. Götterdämmerung lastet almost six hours but time passed b that fast I couldn t imagine. This thing which is the stage is teh best I´ve ever seen.

  • Both are disappointing... are they not?

  • Bryn Terfel LIKE :D

  • @HeidelbergSoprano LIKE?@?!?.. If he was anywhere near me i'd JUMP ON HIM!

  • @breakaliciouskid786 Yes I approve serious fan girl moments ^.^

  • @HeidelbergSoprano.. i love him!.. i wanted to marry him when i first started singing.. But then I realized He was alot older.. But I'm a FANGIRL TO THE MAX!!!!!

  • @breakaliciouskid786 Lol, the only problem being that he's been married already for 24 years, and his first language is Welsh. But, yes, he is WONDERFUL!!!!!! :D

  • Are those the so called "gods" by Wagner... Sorry for the fans, but that's funny crap.

  • Miss Voigt needs to never sing Wagner again. This is a travesty!!!!!!!!!!!! Stick to Strauss. . .

  • @bottomson Well, I don't even think she does Strauss very well. Her Wagner is puny.

  • what the hell is going on in New York? this is what they're broadcasting to the world? this is an embarrassment.

  • Well, at least they knew to cut the clip before that final phrase was uttered.

    This is unacceptably poor singing.

  • She's plain wobbly awful, and he doesn't sound juicy as usual...

  • Thumbs Up if Doug Walker brought you here!

  • das ist deutsch aber ich versteh trotzdem nur die Hälfte :D Thats german but I still only understood half of it :D

  • Not to be mistaken. Terfel is intriguing as always and he has all the qualitiies of an outstanding singer and then some...he has proven his dramatic potential as Jochanaan more than a decade ago and now as Holländer and in other roles he sang...but to me somehow there is something missing in his Walküre Wotan- even though it`s intelligently sung.

  • Terfel's voice did not warm up until very late in this performance. Voigt is generally fine as Brunnhilde - not a powerful voice, but very a sincere and credible interpretation she gave.

  • @Cissy97 I think it used to be MORE powerful. Do you not agree??

  • Glad I could't get a ticket - this was painful

  • I'll in theatre to view the relay of this one at 9 July, 1730hr HK time!

  • deborah cambio demasiado la voz con su delgadez, no esta cantando bien

  • @melisandedebussy , pues yo prefiero esta versión a la que sacó Bayreuth. Halle, por ejemplo, es un robot actuando

  • Does anyone know if The Met has any intention of releasing the lastest Ring Cycle on DVD?

  • Deborah, relax ... calm ... study, rest, rest ... no stress

  • Debora insufficient, good looking she is so different since l saw her in Spain.

  • Terfel's voice, surprisingly, does not sound dark enough for Wotan.

Voigt would be the most beautiful Brunnhile for many a while.

  • I saw the transmission here in Monterrey, and I loved it!! the stage was amazing!! Fricka was awesome!!

  • Saw this on Saturday. Everyone got to their feet when Jonas Kaufmann took his curtain call. He was incredible. Terfel and Voigt were also amazing.

    Can't wait for Siegfried.

  • @lucavigg Siegfried should be good too, coming out of Westbroek's belly.

  • A great performance!

I watched the HD transmission 14th May

  • I saw the screening today, it was simply magnificent! I would love to see it again! Such talented performers, both of them!

  • Terfel é orrendo! Voigt invece é meglio qui che nel repertorio italiano in cui é inascoltabile.

  • HORRIBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!!!!

  • I will be seeing this on Saturday May 14th,2011 via HD transmission to my local

theater from the Met Opera House. Looking forward to it.

  • I just saw this last night and it was fantastic. Terfel was stupendous and Voigt, utterly charismatic. The first act got a standing ovation.

  • Los dos fulminantes!!!!!

  • Los dos fulminantes!!!!!

  • There was, of course, the stumbling of Deborah on her way up to daddy Wotan which, unfortunately, will make Wagner history. When I look at it closely, in this rehearsal, it looks like Bryn has to do a quick sidestep when Deborah is clinging on to him. The construction is wobbly. Luckily their voices aren't.

  • I was at the performance Friday night. It was spectacular, even with Voight slipping and singing on the lower apron. She sounded wonderful, as did Terfel and Blythe and Kaufmann. The sets are STUNNING. The opening of the 3rd Act is AMAZING.

  • I don't really get all this Voigt bashing. She's an excellent singer. At least she should have a chance to show her Brunnhilde in the full length of the opera. Then we'll see again. As to her acting, I don't see anything wrong with it, to be honest. I think I would be more nervous about Bryn Terfel. I don't really like his sound here, not dark enough. Doesn't really fit the character, I think.

  • @visse264 I think I was totally wrong about Bryn Terfel. He was the star of the (first) night, as far as I'm concerned. Good job, Deborah.

  • This makes me feel a little nervous... I'm really hoping she's only sounding thin due to the fact it's just a rehearsal. If this is how she sounds in performance, then it will be a real disappointment. People should not be cast simply because the name will sell tickets. It's time for new Wagnerian stars to rise rather than let former ones go out with a whimper. Terfel sounds great, and the stage's shape looks pretty cool.

  • @Jaydoggy531 Wellsaid. It's a shame that this is what the Met has come to. This was a triumph for every male in the cast.

  • @coryisawake I don't really see what's wrong with the other females, exactly. Westbroek, of course, had this throat infection which affected the first two performances. Now she's doing very well. I thought Blythe is terrific as Fricka. But, "this was a triumph for every male in the cast", doesn't necessarily mean the women are worthless, I presume.

  • She's truly awful and he's badly miscast. Egads.

  • It's really not all that bad--in comparison to the casts the Met has foisted on the public in the recent past. Debbie's not the best, but the gurl's workin' it. I have to say that the costumes are really totally cliched and uninteresting so far in this Ring. Really dull. And the set--I really looked forward to something more stimulating from Lepage's people. Nothing controversial or forward-looking in it--just some technological gadgetry and a big bill for the Met.

  • I mortgaged my soul for sat matinee tickets in May - yikes - this is laughable. I was disappointed in Mr. Terfel for Rheingold, but he sounds and looks better here. At least he has an eye patch now and not hair hanging over his eye. I had my doubts about Ms Voigt singing this role, and now they are confirmed. As far as the staging and acting - I hope someone in charge reads these comments - this is awful. The public will hate it. Especially anyone who has ever seen Wagner's operas staged.

  • could anyone tell what part of the opera this is please?

  • @proopsforpresident Act 2, Scene 1 (entrance of Brunnhilde).

  • @visse264 thanks!

  • Opera Artists of this level should take professional acting lessons to try to avoid becoming ridiculous on stage. We dont expect to see Callas or Dame Judi Dench on stage but seeing a Valkyria and start laughing from the way she moves is wrong. How can you concentrate to her singing (her Jotohoho is also not particularly good).

After seeing in the last years singers like Dessay hallucinating they are perfect actresses while they are ridicules I think it is time singers to attend acting lessons!

  • there has been lots of speculation about how debbie will sound singing this role, but i think she looks and sounds great. nice preview. thanks.

  • @asdfopera

why does Voight move like a man? she even grabs him like a buddy ahahahha This is ridiculous... is that all she learnt all these years on stage? Sad spectacle

  • @LohengrinT Could it have something to do with the part she's playing? I think she sounds great, but this little excerpt is too little of course to really judge her. However, based on this I do have confidence she will make a fine Brunnhilde.

  • @visse264

vocally perhaps... but why dont they take the acting part as serious This is Wagner - acting is essential - these are musical/mystical dramas. We dont expect an Opera Singer to be equally talented as an actor but that is why lessons exist. Body stature, looking at mirrors while moving. Each body needs different handling. What looks brilliant for someone is ridiculous for another. Why someone as vocally talented as Voight take her acting so much less serius

  • @visse264

i agree, it's not enough to judge the entire role but enough to determine that i want to hear more.

  • @LohengrinT

i know you know wagner better than i do, but valkyries are rough war-like women, not gentle delicate girls. she grabs him like more like a daughter to her father, not like a buddy. i never touch my buddies like that.

  • @asdfopera

When a certain gesture brings laughter then no matter how "well you meant it to be" it is wrong.

Being ridiculous on stage was Callas' worst nightmare. Because what these people do, sing so difficult music and act requires a brain function of the highest level.

Arent there stage advisors at the met?

  • @LohengrinT

yes, and they'll probably chance certain things later on since they're only rehearsing now.

  • @asdfopera When they take into account the things Lohengrin says it will most certainly improve! But then, there's also the chance of Deborah Voigt getting stage fright...

  • @LohengrinT And finally, this is meant for the theater, right? You're seeing a dress rehearsal close up. What is "laughable"? Seems they're trying to be campy, just a bit, with the spear and all. I love the unusual take. The only folks who will complain are those wedded to only one interpretation.

  • @LohengrinT No offence, but do you expect a warrior to move like a ballerina? I mean, how is Brunhilde supposed to move? Seriously. I think this is actually quite realistic.

  • @100fulallmusic

I expect her not to move like an idiot! :))
