  • not only that they sold electric car battery technology to the oil company

they'll probably do the same with the Volt

do you trust this guys ?

  • I just love the car,I can go have Breakfest

And pay for no gas,go to the store ect

I'm retired this is great stuff

  • Nerd debate - fools are debating batteries.

  • Ugly, underpowered and overpriced. Three strikes against it already, no matter how good the intentions. Good luck with that.

  • Who's going to spend 40,000$ on a electric car?

  • Comment removed

  • in production?? it's truth

  • Crap! I liked the concept design way better! Use that instead... with NiMH batteries and I'll buy it!

  • The concept was like a brick. It wasn't aerodynamic at all. The production version is much better.

  • lithium ion polymer batteries hold more, build it with that and i'll buy it!

  • @karn33333 Lithium polymer holds 15% more maybe, they're also banned from air transportation due to catching on fire, lose large amounts of charge meaning you need to charge up often even if you don't drive and last only a few years to name a few problems. Advanced NiMH are safe, 100% recyclable, only lose about 15% of their charge in a whole year being idle, and OUTLAST the car itself to name a few. Still for lithium you puppet?

  • @scorpsx

you obviously don't know shit about li ion batteries.

  • @karn33333 I know the second lithiums are made they start to degrade, they are banned from air travel, about 15% smaller then NiMH, last on average 3 - 4 years and plenty more dumb ass.

  • yes li ion batteries last 3 - 4 years while NiMH last up to 15 years how ever since NIMH loses capacity at a much higher and faster rate it won't be much use to anyone if your car gets only five miles for every 6 to 8 hour charge. so after you use the NiMH for a 5 years the performance takes a major dive. while li on polymer batteries are using new cells making it possible to get 90% charge in 10 minutes. also my laptops battery has never exploded.

  • @karn33333 Again you're wrong, as I just mentioned look up LSD NiMH and you'll see they are a better choice for long term power storage. Plus now there's quick charge NiMH batteries as well. After 5 years of use NiMH will still be at 100% as proven with the old NiMH in Rav4 EVs. Get your facts straight.

  • @karn33333 Further GM has doubled the lithium batteries giving an 80 mile range, but set the generator to kick in at 30% to make them last longer. So in fact using NiMH battery would take less room.

  • Li ion batteries can be formed into a wide variety of shapes and sizes so as to efficiently fill available space in the devices they power, also Li ion batteries do not suffer from the memory effect. They also have a self-discharge rate of approximately 5-10% per month, compared with over 30% per month in common nickel metal hydride batteries, approx. 1.25% per month for Low Self-Discharge NiMH batteries and 10% per month in nickel-cadmium batteries. so in Fact your statements are wrong.

  • NiMH can also be used to fit any shape, and do not suffer from memory loss. Lithiums may be able to also be shaped but do suffer memory loss. This is why they recommend conditioning lithium either by you or at the factory. Further the life of a lithium cell is only a few years, this is why the Volt has doubled the battery to make sure it will last during warranty for the guaranteed range. NiMH low self discharge lose less then 1% per month (take a look at eneloop for example), show me a lithium.

  • so lets recap I'm a "puppet" because I'd prefer a different battery then you. Then I'm a dumb ass because you make a list of things you "know" about the li ion battery which just happens to be incorrect or down right misleading. for example "I know the second lithiums are made they start to degrade". in what way do they degrade? or degrade any dif then any other battery? so maybe if you'd stop sucking NiMHs cock you could spend that time to actually look up facts instead of making them up.

  • Here's the facts, and I have shown examples you haven't so who's making what up?

    NiMH

-100% safe for the environment, fully recyclable, allowed for air transportation

    -Suffers no memory loss

-Advanced NiMH allows quick recharge and only loses about 1% power a month when stored

    -Will outlast the vehicle

Plus a whole lot more, only thing lithium has is a better capacity thus doesn't take as much room but only lasting a few years negates even that. Why also is lithium banned from air transport???

  • @karn33333 Here's an easy task for you genius, show me one lithium battery that has lasted 10 years and still 100%. Is there even any that lasted 5 years? Now look at Rav4 EV, still 100% today and 140 mile range. Then look up NiMH Ovonic which gave about 316 mile range back in 1997. That's not even the advanced NiMH that's out there today!

  • As of January 2008, the United States Department of Transportation issued a new rule that permits passengers on board commercial aircraft to carry lithium batteries in their checked baggage IF the batteries are installed in a device. Types of batteries affected by this rule are those containing lithium, including Li-ion, lithium polymer, and lithium cobalt oxide chemistries.

  • @karn33333 Yes portables are allowed, but shipping battery packs are not due to the unstable nature (catching on fire / exploding). They are considered a hazard and can only be shipped by ground. The closest battery recycling plant near me caught fire 4 times in the last couple years!

  • One of the major advantages of Li Ion batteries is their power to weight ratio, which easily exceeds that of NiMH for a lighter, smaller power supply. yes NiMH can but be made in virtually any shape but they are still heavier then the same shape and size of a li ion b. Unlike NiCad and NiMH, li ion batteries can be stored for 1 or 2 months without significantly losing charge. actually its the li ion that dont have memory loss its NiMH that does get your facts streight. god damn.

  • @karn33333 You need to get your facts straight, look up LSD NiMH! They only lose about 1% power a month when being stored. Which lithium can beat that? Lithium may be smaller but you'l always have to keep it charged, it DOES have memory affect and you'll need t replace it after a few years. NiMH is 100% safe, recyclable, maybe 15% bigger and will outlast the car itself!

  • the concept was a bajillion times cooler looking than the production model, but i guess it wasn't aerodynamic, and too extreme looking for the elderly.

  • GM right is more interested in buying Chrysler another dead comapny than developing technologies like these.

a loser company buying another loser company= ZERO

    dumb dumb dumb !

  • Yeah it looks a bit more like the Prius than the concept Volt but I can still recognize it.

  • the crazy thing is these cars cudve been out a long time ago...the EV1's were out in 03' but crushed them..they bought the technology so that big oil cud keep making money

    "who killed the electric car"

    watch that

  • yeah that movie is pretty powerful. but i don't think they even mentioned the money GM got from the government (i.e. us! you and me!!!)

    bastards

  • yea i know..its all bulllshit...this whole governents rigged...if tha electric car wouldve taken off we wudent need oil...and chances are we wudent be in tha war we're in today in tha middle east..then more money to keep...more money for our stuff...then no stock market depression..lol i went a lil haywire but yea u get tha picture..everything wud be better

  • well, thats wat happens when a bunch of idiots run the country, lol...

  • It doesn't really matter whether we give GM any credit, or talk smack about them. Products sell themselves. If they produce the best product at a competitive price, they will be the winner. They have failed to do that so far in a big way, so its no wonder people have lost confidence in them, But we will let this, their latest venture speak for it self. As for me, I'm not hearing anything to get exited about. Still smells like self interest and corporate greed.

  • folks the VOLT RUNS ON A 1.4 LITER GASOLINE ENGINE

this is a quote from Rob Peterson of GM reported today by msnbc 9/25/2008

"A small amount of power from the generator will recharge the batteries, but most will be used to directly run the car, he said."

"GM did not intend to deceive people by maintaining that he motor would only be used to recharge the batteries."

he said DID NOT INTEND TO DECEIVE !!! is deceive also LYING?

  • You know what, you almost sound like a LOBBYIST trying to kill GMs product before it even ships.

The car is ALWAYS completely driven BY THE ELECTRIC motor. The driving wheels are connected to the ELECTRIC MOTOR ONLY. I stress this, because in the Prius, it is connected to the GAS motor with the electric motor acting as a helper. The Volt will drive for the first 40 miles on pure electricity, then the small gas motor will kick on to continue powering the ELECTRIC motor AND RECHARGE the batteries.

  • How is it that a new start-up company, like Tesla Motors can create a new electric car that BLOWS AWAY the specs of any electric car made by any of the major multi-million $ auto manufacturers? The big auto manufacturers better wake up to the future and stop catering to the old ways of oil, or they may be sitting on the side-lines in the future shaking their heads. It will be an exciting next 10 years for the auto industry (and the battery)!

  • Ah, because they can charge $100,000 FOR IT.

Unfortunately, GM doesn't have the luxury of only building cars for the Donald Trump's of the world.

  • The politic games that these super large auto manufactures play will be there demise in the future. It will be the "small" innovators like Tesla Motors that will eventually rise to the top! I keep hearing people say "we" the consumers have to change our perspective on alternative fuel concepts. It is up to the large multi-million $ corporations to make these new innovations/concepts available at an affordable price! Once they do that, the public will respond with support!

  • gm's in bed with big oil - it will be interesting to see how this plays out

  • the BATTERY that they will use for this vehicle does NOT EXIST

the factory that makes the battery does NOT EXIST! all they have are prototype batteries!

this is a publicity stunt to get free money from the govt. w/c are taxpayers like you and me !

  • Yeah, and then we can keep bitching when GM totally ignores alternative fuels altogether. Give them credit for doing something.

  • If they have prototypes, then that kinda kills your assertion that they do not exist, doesn't it?

  • This vehicle will be a winner - no question. The only problem GM will have is not being able to build enough of them. Home Run.

  • The longer i sit here and watch this video the more upset i become with GM and there rhetoric! Just as i lost hope i just seen Chryslers Ceo on msnbc unvailing there production ev sport coupe and the electric jeep and van. There EV sport coupe is HOT!!!!!! The liberty looks like the gas burning type too. Chrysler may actually come from behind and knock GM and Ford out. After the cut and gut of the volt im cheering for Chrysler now! GM.. bit me!@!!!!!!!!!!

  • The EV sport coupe is a lotus!!! Chrysler didn't build it from scratch. They are using current vehicles because they jumped in so late. If they would have got in the game earlier, they might have had something completely new like the volt.

  • The Volt is just the Tip of the Spear.

Why? According to the USDOT, 78% of daily commutes and 92% of one-way trips are LESS than 40 miles. The Volt uses NO gas during these trips and electricity is 1/10th the cost of gas per mile!!

The 1st years Volt production will sell out the 1st weekend even if it costs over $40,000 and competes with other premium compact cars with unique style and performance, like the $46,000 BMW 135i or $44,000 Audi A3.

    Transportation Revolution, Baby!!!

  • hundreds of fully-functional, highly-regarded ev-1's were destroyed by this very company just a few years ago. i find that offensive.

  • Offensive? Are you joking.

That's about as stupid as me saying "I find it offensive that you buy Miracle Grow instead of shoveling Cow s__t."

The cars belonged to GM, they could do whatever the Hell they liked with them.

  • I'm not a hundred percent on this, but I'm almost 100%, that the United States Government gave GM and Ford 1 Billion dollars to use to develop EV technology, so in a way the people kind of owned those cars, because we payed for probably most of the tech that went in to them. I remember watching I think it was President Carter, handing them the check.

  • the Govt. also just gave the big 3 a 25Billion low interest loan just a week ago.

See without the Consumer/Taxpayers] this will not happen as GM is bankrupt.

btw In reality the govt. does not have money its coming from Taxpayers like you and me!

  • The concept is so cool. I couldn't wait to get one. The production model is an ugly piece of mordern crap. I can wait forever. Who made the decision to change the body style. This is one of the reason why GM is going down the tubes. Let's take an original body style and turn it into a Prius clone. Gas milege aside, I don't want one anymore.

  • keep dreaming this will not go in production because of the battery. it does not exist !

  • This car looks great. I want to see the interior and learn how much it will cost to charge. I might just get it.

  • can you see through the roof?

  • the front looks like a honda civic and the rear end a prius

    can't they be original?

i wont pay $40K for a glorified electric golf cart with a small gas motor to charge the battery

  • dude. you cant afford the car anyway...so just keep it real. I am already on the waiting list. I purchased 2 of these up front. And it only Cost $33,879.76 a piece. not $40,000

  • Mrchichity... anyone starting a statement with "DUDE" would probably have a hard time buying his lunch this week!! Bought 2? lol There is no list for this car from gm YET. And no gm volt blog sites do not count as a waiting list for the car.

  • Oh poor little boy. You just dont get it. There are some people on this earth...who can afford anything they want..when they want. Have you ever spent $30,000 on kitchen tile..?? Have you ever Dropped $40,000 on a Chevy Caprice just because..?? Have you ever spent $11,000 on a Garbage Can from Dubai Egypt..?? I have done all these things...and Dropping A couple G's on a car like this wont be a problem..for me...because I already put alot of money down to make it happen. Watch my videos. Bitch

  • yawn..... was you able to buy your lunch this week? LOL your statement reeeks of redneckness. LOL

Reality check for you skippy. You can't buy one of these yet! I am sure when they are available you would have a hard time buying the insurance on one let alone buying one. Your statement says alot about you and your flat wallet. ;)

  • will be price around 30-40k depending if GM gets subsidies from the government.

  • This what you get when malibu, prius and pt cruiser sleep together.

  • yuk, what the fuck is this shit. Looks very mundane

  • Great car, silly video (zero info and Chevy should'a had a little guy behind the wheel to make it look bigger). If they price it reasonably (Toyota took a loss on the first Prius models just to learn), then this is going to be a huge, game-changing hit. Make it $30k GM, and learn how to build a lot of these and own a new market; you'll make bank soon enough. At $50k you just prime the market for the next manufacturer.

  • What the fuck were you guys thinking it ugly. You dumb asses!

I was looking forward to this car you dumb dumb dumb asses!

  • What's that car ?

Where is the Chevy Volt ?

    :-(

  • Looks great to me. But will someone please explain to me why you would need a 1.4L 4 cylinder engine to simply charge a battery? Couldn't a 750 cc motorcycle engine do that? Since the gas engine does not provide power to the axles why have such a big engine in there?

  • It has to be able to drive up a mountain with the battery totally empty. In other words, the engine must be able to supply all the power the car needs. It is a good tradeoff to get unlimited range. Added mass does not significantly reduce range since it can reclaim energy on braking. It does add cost however. Hey, pure electric car 90% of the time + unlimited range = win.

  • Conservation of energy. Darn physics, lol. a 750 cc engine is simply not powerful enough to keep this thing moving if the battery ran out of juice on the freeway or on a hill (unfortunately). The engine has to be able to drive the car without any help from the battery.

  • this car looks like a fucking chevy malibu

  • It doesn't look as mean as I was expecting. The car now has a nice and friendly compact look to it. It's a nice looking car just the coolness took a big hit.

  • I actually like it better than the concept.... Needless to say, I'd take one.

  • The standing ovation was rightly deserved.

  • the concept looked ugly, it was a driving brick!

  • at least it doesn't look like a prius.

    uughhh

    *shudder*

  • it's called cost and aerodynamics...have you EVER seen a production car that looked anywhere near as good as its concept?

  • are they tring to make it ugly so it want sell? is that the goal? What happened to awsome concept body style

  • I'd agree

  • so it want sell? learn to speak English asshole. the car isnt about looks... even though it look better than about 90% of the cars out there.
