  • Stunning.Beautiful song and a video that compliments it perfectly.

  • Beautiful song. I thought the model in the video was Ingrid Chavez. They look very similar.

  • This has to be David Sylvian's 'silkiest' song. Truly beautiful and inspirational.

  • well said 'nalanostrebor'! silky indeed.

  • Comment removed

  • This song was part of my "survival package" during terrible youth days in the 80´s. It still brings back the feelings of those days - and I still love it!

    A timeless treasure!

  • @ghlieme The same goes for me. David Sylvian and Japan were the soothing to my early twenties' pains and tribulations. Maybe this is why I stopped listening to them for a long time. Watching these videos again, made me remember why I loved them in the first place.

  • I FREAKING LOVE SYLVIAN!!!!!!

  • This is the best pop song I ever listened!!!Truly the best artist today with dignity and respect!!!His concept of artistic view of music is remarkably!!!Poisonly sounds of sax and other instruments are awesome!!!!Absolutelly out of time!!!Masterpieces!!!

  • Excellent in every respect!

    Alex

  • He cancelled a show date at Michigan Theatre and it killed me. Have everything on vinyl from the early years to bid my time until he comes around again. Truly the biggest disappointment of my life when he cancelled...

  • Il più grande di sempre !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this man still is god saw him last year in London....it was 2 hours of bliss..

  • i was there in the 80's this man was god!!!

  • caro david scommetto essendo uomo ti fai il servizio sulle donne ho detto fate l'amore e mai più la guerra nobody home.

  • love for body love fisic and kisses for this year no spirituality... and you in the eros passionalyty watz your vote :0 2 o 10 e lode this year 2009 new year veneration and adoraztion comunity world abut my.this love for ever people.good year.

  • baby, I have to tell you...there is no easy way out...

How does he come up with his lyrics? they are genius!

  • das melhores musicas do david

  • One of the most beautiful of Sylvian's songs, this one. Long, a favourite of mine.

  • Amazing!!

  • Gone to Earth is such a beautiful album. Thank you David.

  • se dio avesse voce sarebbe quella di david!!!

  • Concordissimo...

  • I remember hearing the album being played, in of all places Harrods!!!

  • I know what you mean. Whenever you meander about a town/city shopping precinct background music just sounds like noise but when you hear it is Japan or David Sylvian you just can't help going to the shop after listening to it and quizing the person playing it as there is an immediate affinity with that person. Thats the beauty of this music not being mainstream.

  • que bonico este tema che, bonico del tó.

  • It's always amazing to see anything David Sylvian. I have loved him forever. I'm almost 34 now and have loved him/Japan since I was 8 or 9. Gone To Earth has been my #1 album since 86 when I first heard it (I was 12!!). It was a complete awakening for me that album. I remember not leaving my room for an entire weekend when I first bought it because it was so beautiful! I remember crying and not being able to tell anyone why since I thought they'd think I was a freak for an album making me cry!

  • I was the same way for 3 years! This album is more than talent. It's giftedness.

  • ditto ditto ditto!!!!!!

  • Ore mo sou omouze!

  • I know what you mean, almost identical to me, though I discovered the album in 1991 aged 19!

I used to set my alarm clock extra early so I could listen to it before leaving for work, it had such a lovley calming feeling.

    er.. anyway, great comment!

  • @roygbiv08 Roy, I have felt the same way about certain music, including David's music. Today music is so banal. The fact that it can be downloaded, that the albums and all it's art have pretty much disappeared, that a few dance moves can make anyone a "star' is proof of that. Sylvian, with Japan, solo, with Fripp or Ryuichi has done very magical things. What i call ART ...

  • Would you please tell me what album is this song from?

  • it's taken from the double album "gone to earth", a first time in cd but not with the integral LP, and now with all the lyrics and music.

this album is in a 60% part musical.

    (a french sylvian specialist)

  • Thank you!

  • I managed to find that album last year on record. I love it to bits. it's played well!

Being 17 I feel lucky to have discovered David.

  • You are 17?

I am also 17 and I am happy to discover the beautiful music of this beautiful man too.

  • haha... I discovered this stuff last summer, when I was 15... i really liked it!

  • This is the worst sounding of 4 versions of this song and video presently on UTube... the other 3 are quite similar... just a little helpful info.

    -

  • I've known about David Silvian ocasionally lately and his music impressed me so much!I've never heard him earlier because there's no information about such beautiful artist

  • It's so interesting reading these comments. I too have listened to GTE for the past 20 years. Are there any other artists who will endure like this? This music brings back amazing images/feelings of places I've played it all over the world. Every Sylvian album is such a joy discovery. Thank god that voice has been there to soothe my heart.

  • Music from one of the best albums ever made, Gone to Earth! Thanks for posting this video.

  • Thank you for posting. A beautiful, haunting tune, I never realized there was a vid. All of Japan's music, and Sylvian's solo work is timeless. I dislike when Japan get lumped into the "New Romantic" movement, I think that was done largely by the media at the time, and by people who didnt know any better. It was an easy catagory to throw them into. But let's face it, musically, artistically, emotionally, Japan was pretty far removed from and light years ahead of bands like Duran Duran!!!

  • hi,

you have no idea what the nice things you said cheered me right up.

ive loved them since 1978(there blows my age).when they split i followed sylvian and hehas continued writig some of the most full sounding deep music( for me anyway).one thing that was great fun, i happened to look like steve jansen his brother, done me the world of good that.hope im not boring you, been along since talking to a fan.

thank you and al the very best to you and your,

    dean.

  • lovely song gr8 fan in the 80's didn't know he was still going i have missed so much since brilliant trees album

  • ops i never knew that was a video version from that song lol thanks once again for that ^_^

  • OMG i love that song and i never knew that is a video , thanks sooo much for posting ^_^

  • now this song is summer.. and love..and nature....poet

  • so what does david play then?

  • he plays a red guitar

  • I ought to mention that a lot of the guitar work on this song (and album) are by Bill Nelson, no idea why he gets overlooked. Especially the clean atmospheric parts. He's all over "Before The Bullfight" in particular - check him out.

  • Bill Nelson is fantastic, but on this album I am pretty sure most of the guitar work is Robert Fripp. This is from GONE TO EARTH.

  • Fripp actually only plays on a few of the songs. He is spectacularly good as usual, but Nelson can be heard on a lot more of the songs.

  • David Sylvian and Japan - one of the best examples of emanzipation of musical minds over the buisness. A genuine hero!

  • Does anyone know if the girl in this PV is David's ex-wife Ingrid?

  • No it's not...

  • grande artista.Purtroppo non conosciuto da troppa gente....

  • LOL

  • the video is pretty good

  • Watching this brings back some deep feelings of my late teen uni years. I still have the original vynil record album of this. I remember listening to the entireity of this album for the first two years I had it. I got it in 1987, and still listen to it regularly to this day in the 2003 CD re-release. Gone to Earth means a lot to me.

  • Sublime.

  • Every thing he does is PERFECT

  • David Slyvian's voice matches perfectly to this kind of moody song!

  • gran tema

  • Snow Borne Sorrow is indeed a beautiful record. Atom and cell is probably my favourite track from it. Video for it is on you tube as well.

  • grande canzone ispirata dalla natura

  • Amazing!!!Beauty in everything he does!

  • Being a bit of an old reactionary bastard as far as Sylvian is concerned, I think he never bettered Gone To Earth, SOTB, Alchemy and Brilliant Trees. These are the records that will stand the test of time. Blemish I find too difficult. Anyway, Silver Moon..Top Song fae the Top man!

  • I totally agree with you, still this guy is beautiful!

  • Try 'Nine Horses' and his Album 'Snow Bourne Sorrow". Particulary the track 'Atom and Cell' with Ave Hendriksen on trumpet... It's absolutely sublime.

  • don't think it is ingrid chavez as I dont think they met to 1992 and this was done in 1987 when she was with a certain prince

  • You're quite correct it's not Ingrid...

  • One of the most beautiful video clips ever made for a song - simple, beautiful and understated.

The use of Ingrid Chavez [???] in the film clip is also very affecting.

    Bravo, Mr. Sylvian.

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • David Sylvian is a truly spiritual artist.I feel both at peace and well being on hearing this beautiful song again.

  • Lovely song .......

  • Incredible video at the time, though the wild-haired head-swirling vixen was unnecessary. The landscape combined the female body is very Dali-esque. Yay David!

  • David Sylvian is a genious and Gone To Earth with Robert Fripp is a masterpiece. Those of us working in radio at the time pushed for airplay but conservative FM stations would only spot play instead of rotation. One of the those records you never tire of. Check out his album Dead Bees On A Cake if you like this type of stuff. Songs like Darkest Dreaming (which was briefly featured in Season 3 of CSI) and Cafe Europa are worth a listen.

  • I so remember that CSI episode, with the dominatrix. Luckily, in the '80s I was dj'ing for college radio, so we played all the Japan/David Sylvian that we wanted.

  • I had never seen this video until just now. It is a breath-taking video and the lyrics and vocals are just... words fail me. David is truely a master of his craft. Thanks for posting this video!

  • I feel so privileged. I was DJing college radio when both "Gone To Earth" (1987) and "Rain Tree Crow" (1991) came out. In both cases I taped the album immediately, so as to have them until my local record store could order me copies. Actually I kept the Gone To Earth (2 LPs, vinyl) tape so as to be able to put it on auto-reverse when I went to sleep.

Although both albums went nowhere commercially, they have been trusted companions in my life ever since.

  • David is one of the best lyricist of all times, he also owns one of the most beautiful vocals that humanity has ever put out. This track got me hooked onto his stuff (from 120 minutes on MTV a long long long time ago). He is what music is about. His next album "Secrets of the Beehive" is a must have.

  • i've been searching for an artist that captures my imagination like ds, and i've come up short. eno/bowie leave me cold.never liked ferry, that comparison between ds & ferry has to stop. i find ferry's work superficial, but not sylvian.

  • maybe patrick wolf?

  • I think the only way they can compare is that they're both considered very stylish. Other than that there's not much to go on. I do love ferry though.

  • I always enjoy this mind

  • Sylvian is one of the best kept secerts of those who truly love real music. His music is so adictive.

  • many many thanks for all these sylvian videos, your tops.

  • fantastico!!!

  • never seen it before great thanks

  • Excellent song from his masterpiece Gone To Earth. Thanks for posting it.

  • gone to earth is a great album , thanks for the video , not seen it before .

  • Really beautiful. Both video and song. I've never listened it before.

  • So beautiful

  • I remember seeing this on 120 Minutes on MTV and going out and buying GONE TO EARTH the very next day. Fripps emotional guitar work coupled with David's brilliant vocal and melody is soooo very sublime. Love these visuals and scenery. One of my all time favourite Sylvian tunes.....
