This song was part of my "survival package" during terrible youth days in the 80´s. It still brings back the feelings of those days - and I still love it!
@ghlieme The same goes for me. David Sylvian and Japan were the soothing to my early twenties' pains and tribulations. Maybe this is why I stopped listening to them for a long time. Watching these videos again, made me remember why I loved them in the first place.

I know what you mean. Whenever you meander about a town/city shopping precinct background music just sounds like noise but when you hear it is Japan or David Sylvian you just can't help going to the shop after listening to it and quizing the person playing it as there is an immediate affinity with that person. Thats the beauty of this music not being mainstream.
It's always amazing to see anything David Sylvian. I have loved him forever. I'm almost 34 now and have loved him/Japan since I was 8 or 9. Gone To Earth has been my #1 album since 86 when I first heard it (I was 12!!). It was a complete awakening for me that album. I remember not leaving my room for an entire weekend when I first bought it because it was so beautiful! I remember crying and not being able to tell anyone why since I thought they'd think I was a freak for an album making me cry!
@roygbiv08 Roy, I have felt the same way about certain music, including David's music. Today music is so banal. The fact that it can be downloaded, that the albums and all it's art have pretty much disappeared, that a few dance moves can make anyone a "star' is proof of that. Sylvian, with Japan, solo, with Fripp or Ryuichi has done very magical things. What i call ART ...
I've known about David Silvian ocasionally lately and his music impressed me so much!I've never heard him earlier because there's no information about such beautiful artist
It's so interesting reading these comments. I too have listened to GTE for the past 20 years. Are there any other artists who will endure like this? This music brings back amazing images/feelings of places I've played it all over the world. Every Sylvian album is such a joy discovery. Thank god that voice has been there to soothe my heart.
Thank you for posting. A beautiful, haunting tune, I never realized there was a vid. All of Japan's music, and Sylvian's solo work is timeless. I dislike when Japan get lumped into the "New Romantic" movement, I think that was done largely by the media at the time, and by people who didnt know any better. It was an easy catagory to throw them into. But let's face it, musically, artistically, emotionally, Japan was pretty far removed from and light years ahead of bands like Duran Duran!!!
you have no idea what the nice things you said cheered me right up.
ive loved them since 1978(there blows my age).when they split i followed sylvian and hehas continued writig some of the most full sounding deep music( for me anyway).one thing that was great fun, i happened to look like steve jansen his brother, done me the world of good that.hope im not boring you, been along since talking to a fan.
I ought to mention that a lot of the guitar work on this song (and album) are by Bill Nelson, no idea why he gets overlooked. Especially the clean atmospheric parts. He's all over "Before The Bullfight" in particular - check him out.
Watching this brings back some deep feelings of my late teen uni years. I still have the original vynil record album of this. I remember listening to the entireity of this album for the first two years I had it. I got it in 1987, and still listen to it regularly to this day in the 2003 CD re-release. Gone to Earth means a lot to me.
Being a bit of an old reactionary bastard as far as Sylvian is concerned, I think he never bettered Gone To Earth, SOTB, Alchemy and Brilliant Trees. These are the records that will stand the test of time. Blemish I find too difficult. Anyway, Silver Moon..Top Song fae the Top man!
Try 'Nine Horses' and his Album 'Snow Bourne Sorrow". Particulary the track 'Atom and Cell' with Ave Hendriksen on trumpet... It's absolutely sublime.
Incredible video at the time, though the wild-haired head-swirling vixen was unnecessary. The landscape combined the female body is very Dali-esque. Yay David!
David Sylvian is a genious and Gone To Earth with Robert Fripp is a masterpiece. Those of us working in radio at the time pushed for airplay but conservative FM stations would only spot play instead of rotation. One of the those records you never tire of. Check out his album Dead Bees On A Cake if you like this type of stuff. Songs like Darkest Dreaming (which was briefly featured in Season 3 of CSI) and Cafe Europa are worth a listen.
I so remember that CSI episode, with the dominatrix. Luckily, in the '80s I was dj'ing for college radio, so we played all the Japan/David Sylvian that we wanted.

I feel so privileged. I was DJing college radio when both "Gone To Earth" (1987) and "Rain Tree Crow" (1991) came out. In both cases I taped the album immediately, so as to have them until my local record store could order me copies. Actually I kept the Gone To Earth (2 LPs, vinyl) tape so as to be able to put it on auto-reverse when I went to sleep.
Although both albums went nowhere commercially, they have been trusted companions in my life ever since.
David is one of the best lyricist of all times, he also owns one of the most beautiful vocals that humanity has ever put out. This track got me hooked onto his stuff (from 120 minutes on MTV a long long long time ago). He is what music is about. His next album "Secrets of the Beehive" is a must have.
i've been searching for an artist that captures my imagination like ds, and i've come up short. eno/bowie leave me cold.never liked ferry, that comparison between ds & ferry has to stop. i find ferry's work superficial, but not sylvian.
