This track is from a solo album recorded in 1979/1980, and Richard had nothing to do with it. Although Karen thought it very good, record executives (including brother Richard) thought it not worth releasing. (In fact, Richard reportedly called it "shit.") So, sadly, Karen decided to shelve it, which is why it wasn't released until years after her death.
Rod Temperton wasn't very creative...This is just Thriller, Off the Wall, and It's the Falling In Love combined. However whatever Karen is singing over its alright with me.
You know after reading thousands of comments on you tube, I'm really amazed at how little people really know about the Carpenters, but when you read alot of crap people write they try to convince you, that this is the way it was. The truth is unless you knew Karen, Richard, the band, or anyone in the posse you don't know. Richard knew that people would try to paint him as the bad guy. But let everyone in on a secret don't believe everything you hear, or read. He does so much good for the world!
This album was created too late. By the time this would have made it to the shelves the disco era was officially dead and consumers were moving back to rock n roll. Karen could definitely had some disco hits if they had worked on this in 1978 instead of 79/80. She sings so softly, but with some coaching she could have altered her style to fit the disco sound. This song is a good example of how close she came to doing that.
@steveatl40 The disco sound was still selling in 1979/1980... I think she definitely would've had a disco hit with "Lovelines" and/or "My Body Keeps Changing My Mind" at least.
Richard is so so wrong. Karen could do DISCO. If only they have recorded and release some disco track in the late 70s, they could have a few Top 10 singles. Really thankful that these solo disco track of her manage to see the light of day. Boo to Richard for not wanting to do DISCO with her.

Actually, this is from Karen's solo album that she recorded in 1979. It was never released during her death. Instead, Richard released it in 1996 - 13 years after Karen's death.
Yeah this blew me away when I first found it. If We Try is equally good. She will never be forgotten, her voice is still unequalled, and her songs can bring tears, even to grown men. Were that she was still here, the world is a sadder and poorer place without her. I can still remember the time and place when I first heard she had died. RIP Karen, just hope you're still recording up there.
I found the "Lovelines" album quite by accident a long time ago & didn't hesitate to buy it. So when I sat down to listen to it, I was blown away! Just can't understand why it didn't become a huge hit.
They ( A&M records) should've released Karen's solo album..it was slated for release in 1980..I wonder if it would have added new life to her carrer at that point..one can only guess..great track by RT!
True, her voice is so effort and flawless but RT is the man. I have so many great RT tracks. Have you heard 'Let me call you Angel' by Wayne Hernandez that was 87' and the Mica Paris tracks were awesome and of course the recent track by Mary J. The guy is a ledgend and my hero. So many memories listening to his choons!
RIGHT ON !!! It's all about Rod Temperton -- although the earlier Karen hits were also wonderful. RT is the hidden force of disco-jazz-funk 1977-1981. Not to mention George Benson GIVE ME THE NIGHT album, Patti Austin BETCHA WOULDNT HURT ME, Chaka Khan LIVE IN ME, ANY LOVE, etc etc. Awesome that someone here recognizes his genius -- M.Jackson and all these artists wouldnt have been the same without the right composers/ producers... after 1983 or 1987 or so pop is all downhill! ha ha :-)
Well this is a Rod Temperton penned choon who wrote Thriller, Off The Wall, Rock With You, Stomp (Bros' Johnson), Always & Forever (Heatwave), Yah Mo B There, Razzamataz & a hundred great songs! It suites Karen perfectly!
Well... yes and no. Yes, Karen was an adult, and she was free to do whatever she wanted, just like any other person out there. At the same time, I think it was Richard's way of saying, "before you can go out there on your own, you need to take care of yourself first", and Karen wasn't exactly doing that. She was starving herself to death. I see it as Big Brother watching over Little Sis.
This is actually a solo effort produced by Phil Ramone and written by Rod Temperton of "Rock With You" and "Off The Wall" fame. Richard was just out of rehab and out of commission when she worked on this material.
Something tells me the pitch was sped up...

This was Karen's solo album.....not Carpenters. Just Karen and Phil Ramone. Brilliant record.

This is a Rod Temperton masterpiece IMHO. Richard Carpenter IMHO prejudged that album.

....Lovelines never fade. Neither does the flawless voice of Karen Carpenter.

I've heard this a few years ago. Obviously a Carpenters disco arrangement. Nicely done.

@kkll02 Oh, she had perfect pitch. Not once did she miss a beat or did her voice crack. She was absolutely flawless in her singing ability.

The original version's tempo is a pitch lower than this one (issued in 1989). This is a fine song regardless.
timmy841212 2 years ago 2
Richard wouldn't touch disco with a 10 foot pole. This was all Phil Ramone's and Karen's idea. It's dated, but fun nonetheless.
