ROb, hopedully you will have footage of the 90 in the next test. Sunny scored in in 120 balls, and was dismissed by Holding when repeatedly disturbed by movement at the Sightscreen. Macko states that Lloyd said that that Ahmedabad pitch was the worst he had seen in his life. West Indies routed India eventually, but were on the ropes when Sunny caned them.

Find top all time bowlers. Except Kapil, Sunil scored against everyone. Without helmet. With open pitches. With no restriction on bouncers, fielders and without so much of modern protection.
Concentration, Discipline & Confidence was the key to his success.
Gaveskar got runs in an era when there were uncovered pitches, no rule for bouncers, bat quality was poor and every side use to have an out an out quick bowler .... to me he is the best there was best there is and best there will be
i've got this on video somewhere too - it's from the art of batting by sunny gavaskar, and has a feature batsman from every test playing nation. from memory it's vishwinath, viv richards, barry richards, greg chapell, zahiar abbas, david gower and glen turner, and they all have a feature shot. some great vintage footage for sure
for me wasim, waqar, were far better bowlers than holding and co. because they bowled in flat wickets and still managed to have a better record in test cricket, where as holding and co. bowled in so called "uncovered pitches" and still have similar records in test cricket.
@akash2276 I agree that Wasim and Waqar are also great, but Holding had the company of 3 other great bowlers who used share the spoils. So, the record may not be as great as Wasim who had only Waqar for company most of the time. (You can note that Holding's partner Garner never had a 10 wicket haul, but averaged 20.98 at a strike rate of 51 balls per wicket). Besides, Wasim and Waqar used to indulge in ball tampering which Holding and gang never did.
@sppati123 yep, they never did ball tampering but they were allowed to bowl bouncers after bouncers in an over which modern day bowlers are not allowed to do.
@akash2276 That WI team won everywhere. IIRC, they were the only team to win even in Faisalabad. And no, they played in the covered era. The uncovered era ended with Underwood. :-)
@quizfan1 i had never denied that WI team was a formidable team....the only point that i wanted to make is that likes of holding and marshall weren't as unplayable as everyone says....the modern day batsmen and bowlers are as good as their predecessors....and there is no reason why today's batsmen cannot face them.
people talk about the likes of marshal, holding, roberts such that they were monsters and not humans. At best what can a bowler do?He can bowl fast(140-160kph) and he has three stumps to bowl at.people talk as if the ball used to disappear from the batsman's sight after pitching, when they bowled. There is no reason why modern day batsmen like tendulkar, waugh, ponting, lara couldnt have played any better.
@akash2276 They were formidable bowlers, but in some ways you're right. A lot of their success was based on their physical superiority, outright intimidation, shockingly slow over rates and the number of bouncers they bowled (which you're not allowed to do nowadays). How would they go in today's conditions with today's rules? Hard to say but back then they ruled the world and everyone was shit scared of them.

Love and Blessings from my 54 yr old mom on being able to watch her fav cricketer Sunil Gavaskar score a century. She never thought she would ever see this..
thanks for uploading this precious video. I had read about this innings so often. Heard about this from my father thousands of times. finally got to watch it. thanks so much!
I remember Sunil Gavaskar had his TV serial - "Sunil Gavaskar Presents" in the mid 80 's. This clip was from that series. Also Ravi Shastri, had his own series - batting, bowling, etc. These were prior to them becomming tv commentators in the 90's.
Those days, Doordarshan with its limited 3-4 camera's & outdated computer graphics - the camera sometimes would search for the ball...lol
Sunny played a great knockagainst great bowlers like Holding ,Mar shall and Roberts. He was being written off as a spent forcewhen his bat was knocked off by the great Marshall in the previous test at Kanpur his wifeshometown.Sunny wastruly a great player. Heplayed genuine pace bowlingwith courage, class and determination.
One of Gavaskar's finest innings against a terrifying bowling attack. Before this series, there was talk of how he was past it and should retire. Then, in the test match previous to this, he had been bounced out by Marshall with a throat-ball where the bat flew off his hands and the ball ballooned to gully. After that game, his mentor Vasu Paranjpe told him the story of Stan McCabe in the Bodyline series and how extreme pace cannot be defended, it must be counter-attacked. This knock followed,
Gavaskar played this knock after a pair in Kanpur.Everybody wrote him off and asking for his retirement. He played this knock to prove everybody wrong. That's why he played so many hook and pull shots. This knock made everybody shut their mouths for ever. He was a real jem.
Tendulkar has struggled with Mcgrath, Saqlain, Wasim Akrams, Muralitharan, Vaas and many more, and more recently anderson. Gavaskar was more strong mentally than Tendulkar. Though Tendulkar was naturally gifted than Gavaskar, gavaskar was miles ahead. He played during the era, when there were top class bowlers around the world. Todays bowling attacks are friendly ones. An average of 50 plus during 70s and 80's is special.
Having seen Tendulkar over the years I dont think , He is capable of playing such a innings against such a quality attack. I agree with Prongs1810 analysis. Tendulkar is lucky to be born in this era where most of this batting was witnessed on television. He wouldnt have surived the 70's era for sure. Gavaskar was way ahead. His technique, temperament , intelligence, assessment of pitch and conditions were explemary. He was a true master. He could play adverse fast bowling , swing and turners
He scored his 29th hundred , equalling bradmans record and what was amazing bout this inning was , He got many runs in this test match playing the hook shot, which he had given up , few years ago. It was one of the most aggressive test innings by gavaskar. 100 of some 94 balls, which included 2 sixes and as many boundaries. One of them was a straight lofted shot over the head of Malcolm marshall. He was unstoppable that day.
I remember watching this series. This was a series that was dominated by west indies all throughout. Only Gavaskar and Vengsarkar were able to stand the might of the windies pace attack. Even in the flattest of the pitches, the bowlers troubled the indian batsman. This inning from Gavaskar was special. Before this inning, gavaskar was going through a bad patch and there was lot of talks around that he should retire and quit the game.
@Prongs1810 you have no opinion of your own, have you even seen Sachin play? You are just rambling off what other people are saying. Go and watch some cricket and stop spamming my videos with your shit comments. I'll say whatever the hell i feel like on my channel, you don't like it- then go and watch some cricket and form your own opinions.
@Prongs1810 Why are you trying so hard to talk up Sachin? he obviously needs it. Listen to yourself, you sound pathetic. If Sachin is so great then why are you coming up with such random statements to defend him?
Great innings!! I still remember hearing the commentary on the radio, superb play from the original little master, especially some of hooks against world's fastest bowler at that time.
And Rob my man, since we are sort of trying to compare Tendulkar and Gavaskar, let me reiterate my opinion on the best wicket-keeper batsman that I have seen. It is Gilli..! Not Matt Prior..!! (I know this comment is totally unrelated to this video but I am just a huge fan of Gilli)
@robelinda2 Gavaskar, Dravid, Vijay Merchant for mine. Our top two are the same :-) Read a lot about Merchant and officially became a fan a few years back.
In my humble opinion Gavaskar's the best batsman India has produced.I cant see Tendulkar capable to face "dangerous" bowlers like Marshall, Lillie etc of Gavaskar's era. It's unfortunate most of young Indians could not see his master-class because TV broadcast tech. was not that advanced .BCCI did everything to make Tendulkar more popular because he was and still is the crowd puller and ensures that Indians watch even Kenya vs India if he's playing. Gavaskar= Original little champion.
awesome really.........thanx so much. Im sure many more around the globe mustve been waiting earnestly for these 7 mins of gold.......also if you can manage to upload Gavaskar's 90 in an odi in Delhi & Viv Richard's whirlwind 149 of 99 balls in Jamshedpur odi from the same series of West Indies tour of Ind in 83/84......................Mohinder Amarnath's form in West Indies tour of 82 & later in Pakistan in 82-83
Thx Rob. Do you have footage of Marshall, I think in the opening spell of the 1st test were he made Sunil drop his bat. That spell they said was quick as any. Do you have some footage of that ?
yes. Marshall was devastating in this series taking 35 odd wkts at high pace on placid pitches..but the same can be said of KapilDev who bowled menacingly in this series taking 31 wkts including 9 in one inng at Ahmedabad & a superb crisp spell of seam & swing before lunch on 2ndday at Eden Gardens in which he blew away the Windies top order of Haynes,Richards,Dujon before Lloyd played a matchwinning 160odd. At least Marshall had great support bowlers..Kapil had none whatsoever
@amitava0112 Also worth mentioning that Kapil played five of those six tests with a nagging knee injury. He, of course, could not pull out knowing fully well that India would have been obliterated (possibly whitewashed) in his absence. Shastri, Binny, Madan, S. Yadav and R. Bhat could not have contained West Indians in their raging might!
That makes Kapil's bowling even more commendable. Marshall and Holding got their wickets with fire and pace in this series; Kapil with persistence and swing.
Rob-I will worship at your altar......................this is GOLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD! I've waited 28 yrs to catch this innings after watching this live on telly as a kid. I remember Sunny hitting 2 couples in the 1st over of Macko and then suddenly exploded later with ferocious hooks, pulls, cuts and drives. Macko was simply devilish in this series......the best ever strike bowler! This one innings alone should be sufficient to say Sunny shades Sachin! Thanks a gazillion!
a priceless video...this & the other one of Zaheer's 186...only because of Rob..we many of us are able to go back to our childhood days ..reliving priceless memories of world cricket....Rob should be knighted..I never thought of ever watching Sunny's 29 th again.until this happened
Rob ...if u can managed some footage of Marshall's bowling spells in this 1983 India V WI series (in india)..then pls upload
This was his fastest 100 ever. In the previous match in Nagpur, he was out fending off Marshall and the bat flew off his hand. For Indians, this was unbelievable. Especially considering Windies had scored 500+ on that wicket. So everyone said Gavaskar was finished. In this 2nd test, he pulled out the hook shot which he had put away for a long time. After all that he was bowled by Larry Gomes
@ssjumbo2 "In the previous match in Nagpur, he was out fending off Marshall and the bat flew off his hand."
That was Kanpur, my friend. Not Nagpur. The match finished within three days with Marshall's pace and lusty lower-order hitting proving too hot for the Indians to handle.
@robelinda2 I personally know a few Trinidadians who loved this knock. Just sending this link across to those guys. They love Sunny in that part of the world, ya know!
@robelinda2 Robbie if possible please download Miandad's know of 280* against india. i have been searching it for many yrs i bought a CD but the video quality is very bad.. wil ya rob? :)
bah! I come here to say thanks for a fantastic piece of work and this place just shits me out .. wouldn't mind eating you all for a living ... easiest baits in the world
Wow so much hatred against Sachin in the comments section. It's like some of these guys stop their obsession with Sachin hatred even in a video totally unrelated to him. I pity your lives. You must be living a gloomy life full of hatred. Good luck with your suicide attempts in the near future.
@robelinda2 Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time.......way better than Gavaskar or any other Indian batsman.............he could easily play this kind of an innings over an over again...........have you forgotten the thrashing he gave your own Aussies in 1992 in Sydney and Perth................and in India on countless occasions.................Sachin has scored runs all over the world and in all conditions at a much better average and strike rate than Gavaskar overall..........
@Prongs1810 The thrashing in 1992? Are you kidding? Soft bowling attack, flat itch in Sydney- drawn match on a featherbed, then played a lone hand against a weak bowling attack at Perth, hardly a thrashing by any means. Sachin didn't proposer against any of the great bowling attacks in his career, but Sunil did, he thrived against the very best bowling attacks ever seen in the cricket world. I would imagine you did not watch any of the 1991/92 series in Australia, Sachin was all at sea.
@robelinda2 How can u say that he was all at sea when he scored 2 hundreds in the series when he was 19 and it was his first tour? He has scored the highest no. of runs against Australia, the best team of his era, against Warne, McGrath, Donald, Murali, Wasim and Waqar...the best bowlers of the last two decades.....I dont know what more a batsman must do to be great in your book....
@Prongs1810 Did you see the series? Go see his innings in the 1st, 2nd and 4th tests, all at sea, he no clue at all. He scored in 2 innings out of 10 in the series, hardly dominating stuff against a weak attack.
@Prongs1810 I have no grudge, i deal in facts from watching every Sachin innings since 1989. Its not my fault people have come along in the last 5 years and have nothing to base their judgements on except random stats with no context.
@robelinda2: I think u do not understand cricket. Unfortunately, most of the cricket followers do not understand the game, but just worship their idol & in doing so, they make insulting comments to other great cricketers. This is true for both gavaskar & sachin fans all across the world. I believe, gavaskar & tendulkar are the two finest cricketers, world has ever produced. Gavaskar, Tendulkar, and Dravid are India's three all time best test crickers. Merchent comes next. Educate yourself Pls
great upload!

That was Kanpur, my friend. Not Nagpur. The match finished within three days with Marshall's pace and lusty lower-order hitting proving too hot for the Indians to handle.

He hooks Marshall between two fieldsmen posted at deep fine leg and deep square leg. What surgical precision!

Wow so much hatred against Sachin in the comments section. It's like some of these guys stop their obsession with Sachin hatred even in a video totally unrelated to him. I pity your lives. You must be living a gloomy life full of hatred. Good luck with your suicide attempts in the near future.

@vickyr9909 The only one tailing about hatred and suicide is you. Go away.

SACHIN WILL PLAY THIS KIND OF KNOCK VS KENYA SOON :P
Come2PaaPaa 6 months ago 11
@Come2PaaPaa KENYA U/12 team more like it, even then he'd probably choke and India would lose.
robelinda2 6 months ago 8
@robelinda2 no i guess india wud win coz whenever sachin fails, more often than not india wins. and whenever he scores heavily india loses..
btbharat 6 months ago
@robelinda2 Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest batsman of all time.......way better than Gavaskar or any other Indian batsman.............he could easily play this kind of an innings over an over again...........have you forgotten the thrashing he gave your own Aussies in 1992 in Sydney and Perth................and in India on countless occasions.................Sachin has scored runs all over the world and in all conditions at a much better average and strike rate than Gavaskar overall..........
Prongs1810 6 months ago
@Prongs1810 The thrashing in 1992? Are you kidding? Soft bowling attack, flat itch in Sydney- drawn match on a featherbed, then played a lone hand against a weak bowling attack at Perth, hardly a thrashing by any means. Sachin didn't proposer against any of the great bowling attacks in his career, but Sunil did, he thrived against the very best bowling attacks ever seen in the cricket world. I would imagine you did not watch any of the 1991/92 series in Australia, Sachin was all at sea.
robelinda2 6 months ago
@robelinda2 How can u say that he was all at sea when he scored 2 hundreds in the series when he was 19 and it was his first tour? He has scored the highest no. of runs against Australia, the best team of his era, against Warne, McGrath, Donald, Murali, Wasim and Waqar...the best bowlers of the last two decades.....I dont know what more a batsman must do to be great in your book....
Prongs1810 6 months ago
@Prongs1810 Did you see the series? Go see his innings in the 1st, 2nd and 4th tests, all at sea, he no clue at all. He scored in 2 innings out of 10 in the series, hardly dominating stuff against a weak attack.
robelinda2 6 months ago
@robelinda2 you should not let your personal grudge against Sachin cloud your otherwise excellent cricket judgement
Prongs1810 6 months ago
@Prongs1810 I have no grudge, i deal in facts from watching every Sachin innings since 1989. Its not my fault people have come along in the last 5 years and have nothing to base their judgements on except random stats with no context.
robelinda2 6 months ago
@robelinda2: I think u do not understand cricket. Unfortunately, most of the cricket followers do not understand the game, but just worship their idol & in doing so, they make insulting comments to other great cricketers. This is true for both gavaskar & sachin fans all across the world. I believe, gavaskar & tendulkar are the two finest cricketers, world has ever produced. Gavaskar, Tendulkar, and Dravid are India's three all time best test crickers. Merchent comes next. Educate yourself Pls
