just buy the best thermal windows you can find and have them installed in your house, then have the attic and walls insulated. Forget about all this far fetched, headache stuff
theres nothing free about firewood, either you waste huge amounts of time cutting and hauling it or buying it, it still costs money, and besides if someone wanted to heat with wood they would use a wood stove, not a fireplace, fireplaces use way more wood to heat a given space than a stove would.
this is a really poor idea and cools the flame encouraging incomplete combustion..you want to take heat out much later in the process, from the flue gasses, not out of the fire..
