From Talas & the Goo Goo Dolls to Stemm & Every Time I Die, Buffalo has made numerous contributions to the world of rock & metal. Who's the Queen City's next band to make a worldwide impact?
Billy Sheehan is the bass player of record in American Heavy metal, and check out these boys doing Max Webster's Battlescar for his Geddy Lee stylings...
@jeffjdm1 first time in hollywood it was everything people say about it. we were really wasted and my buddy ran into David lee roth, later billy sheehan joined david lee roth's band.it was pretty cool. it was just awesome. the 80's metal in los angeles rocked because everybody had to stop in L A.
any of you guys remember them playing at "The Peirce Arrow" (just about every week)... Had to be 78-79 ???? Im 46... I think they practiced on Klass Ave in West Seneca for a while.
@jeffjdm1 seen them at the hollywood paladium with Yngwie Malmsteen (Rising Force) and another all black band. 84-86 awesome night in hollywood. power went out for about a minute and then it just rocked.
at about 1:05-1:06 does Sheehan's bass fall off the strap? It goes by really quick but his bass does drop. I can't imagine him not having some kind of straplock system. Maybe he's just rocking out.
While growing up in Missouri. My Bass influence was Billy Sheehan of TALAS. Currently I have notice that Billy is currently reunited with MR. BIG. That's OK. I just wanna ask Billy. If he has ever ask Eddie Van Halen to do a Band Project? The (HAMMER-N-TAP-ON) KINGS of Bass and Electric Guitar. It is Cool to Do the ReUnion Thing, but Is there a Chance to Keep Musicianship FORWARD? Keep Rockin' Billy! The Master of Rock Bass!!! From Paul-25yr-bassplayer veteran. Peace Out.
I read an interview with Billy Sheehan years ago in Guitar Player mag. when he was with David Lee Roth. He said that Dave and Eddie wanted to bring him on as Bass player for Van Halen at one point after Talas opened for them in Buffalo, but Alex objected for some reason. Thats all he said about it, but I hope that sheds some light on your pending question for the Bass Master.
Thank you (Bytorsdog). These down-to-earth musicians are working as hard as they can to create music for us, musicians. Maybe Billy or Eddie can hopefully ask other talented drummers? Such as, Terry Bozzio/Missing-Persons, Danny Carey/Tool, Scott Travis/Racer-X, Judas-Priest, or Chris Alder/Lamb of God? I am speaking from a Musician's Point-of-View. I am hoping these veterans can pull this off. I am so tired of these New Rock on MTV. MTV today is ruining today's young musicians. :Paul
Sure they would have gotten heard. I live in Jax, FL (where they evidently opened for Van Halen. LOL) and I was listening to Talas when "High Speed On Ice" came out. My Bass player was from New York and he used to see Sheehan all the time, and he said that Joey DeMaio from Manowar was another regional bass player who was really well known in the late 70's before Manowar was formed.
F'in A! I bought this album back in 1980 and my friends thought it kicked ass. I yep...I still have this lp. I put in on a cassette with Riot "fire down under" and cranked it as I rode around in 71 charger...those were the days!
It's funny that you mentioned these two bands at once because my friends & I discovered Talas & Riot both in 80 & 81 when we saw them in Jax., FL. opening for Van Halen & Rush respectively. Billy totally blew us away & primed us for Eddie, and Sandy Slavin was every bit as intense on the kit as Neil Peart. Good times indeed!
the red and Blue Wristband that Billy was wearing are in plastic bangs in my closet still smelling like him. He threw them to me. I wonder how much they are worth.
I was right there with ya dude...those were great years for Talas and the upstate N.Y. scene. My first Talas gig was at Elliot's Nest in Rochester 1975. Billy Sheen was insane his bass solos would anilate you. Saw Talas many times from 1975-78 in Rochester & Buffalo at The Penny Arcade, Orange Monkey, Stage One, The Purple Moose, Rooftops, ect. Still have all my Talas buttons, pins, l.p.'s and posters "Rock On"
WOW ...the first Talas show I saw was in 1975..My favorite all time band..I was lucky enough to see Talas at least 200 times..75,76,77,78...those were the days ..kevK
Wish I could buy a copy of this dvd ....

I found the SInk Your Teeth Into That vinyl album at a second hand store a couple months ago. I am very glad I found it. I am hooked.
but it makes me think what kind of person would discard a talas vinyl? They must listen to celine dion and perry como.

@SotR59 He has a straplock system, it's just he had it on the other shoulder to look cool and took it off and put it on the other shoulder.

Yamaha endorsement aside, I wonder if Billy could have pulled the old "Wife" P-Bass off the shelf for a few songs? That would have been cool as hell.

It's a great thing that Billy Sheehan became a star after Talas otherwise all of their great songs would never have been heard
