that Lebanese lady has got no idea what she is talking about. Marjane Satrapi views herself as a Persian Iranian girl that lived under the ISLAMIC OPPRESSION. That's right, islamic republic's oppression. Marjane does absolutely not view herself as a Muslim. pretty please. You guys know nothing about Iranians.
@DelBrisee I think she understands that Marjane was living under Islamic oppression, but within her culture, even a moderately religious person would have beliefs that resemble Islam, the same way a religious moderate in North America would have a belief system that resembles the Judeo-Christian institutions that surround them.
@ComicBookSyndicate There is no place in this world that slightly resembles a theocracy like the Islamic Republic of Iran. It's an utter insult to even compare western societies, even if they are Judeo-Christians (Abrahamic, nevertheless, just like Islam) to Iran. The story of Persepolis isn’t about religion at all but that Lebanese lady automatically started talking about “being a muslim. Wtf?
@DelBrisee People in every corner of the world share the views and beliefs of the society they are raised in. Are you insulted because we assume that Marjane is a Muslim?
When Marjane speaks to God, is her concept of God closer to Christianity? Judaism? Could be, but she doesn't say so.
It is possible to be a Christian, and suffer from Christian oppression (ie: Catholics living in a Protestant country). Isn't it possible to be a moderate Muslim living in an Islamic Republic?
