His rapping reminds me of something from the late 80's early 90's, when white rich white dudes used to try to put out rap CD's. Drop the black accent, and sing if you want to be taken seriously.
Notice the only positive comments made are, to paraphrase, that it's not that bad compared to most pop music. That it precisely the point. An artwork is not supposed to be a repetition, it is supposed to be inventive, thwarting expectations, revealing possibilities yet to be contemplated. The disturbing aspect of contemporary music is that people no longer seem to be seeking such an experience. To be entertained by repetition and the mundane is something I simply cannot contemplate.
I like it! And for all you haters, he's just repeating all the style, swagger and lingo that EVERY hip-hop artist does. If you don't agree, then try creating something new and NOT derivative. Good luck with that! Hahahah!!!
@covr687 says who you???/ how about who ever makes the best songs??? i dont like the song, but most rappers are fake anyways so who cares.you are probably a black racist.
@lilbeaveymac says me who grew up in 1 of the meccas and birth places of hip hop through the 90's late in the game but still hip hop was at its rite and had roots to its beginning minus a very few handful im not saying i know everything about rap etc my point is pretty apparent and u prob dont understand cause ur some teeny bopper who prob grew up in the burbs listening to Aaron Carter lol.
compare this against the pop charts, it is NOT that half bad. there is FARRR worse talent out there that are americas fucking sweethearts of the minute. dont get me wrong, this music seriously sucks balls, but its not like hes bad at doing what hes doing within the medium.
lol dude aint even that bad, people just hating cause he comes from a position of wealth, atleast hes pursuing something he enjoys, quit hating yeallz we all human.
I think it says a lot about hip hop fans when they can't accept a person due to their location and upbringing. Good music isn't good because the artist grew up in the hood or because they're a thug. If that were the criteria then every rapper from the hood would be a star so quit it. The song isn't amazing but judge it on it's own not because of Chet's family.
It's bland sure, but it is refreshing that it is at least a serenade of a rap song rather than being hoodish. Perhaps there are more capable rappers out there, but I would at least like to see more rap songs in this style anyway. would be nice to hear softer or more charming subjects within the rap medium again, "I made a mistake, take me back" being one of them.
I think he's got talent! :D didn't know at all he could sing! and 4 you people who's talking trash about him, save yourselves 4 your sleasy comments! >:-( my word, some people are jealous!
It's not bad, but it feels ridiculous that the son of one of the biggest movie stats of all time is trying to rap. I'm not saying you have to be born in the ghetto to be a good rapper, it just seems weird...
Its got a nice hook. Not saying I think there is any way the son of a millionaire movie star should try to act street. But on their own merits, the song and video aren't bad.
The Production Value is high, but his lyrical pattern is way outdated. It sounds like a beat from this era, but the rhymes are from the mid-90's. Props to Chet for putting himself out there like this, but I would recommend staying in school and getting that degree.
@covr687, agreed. this is disgraceful. As a musician and music producer, I'm appalled. I'd rather shit myself and leave it than listen to the adult Justin Bieber. His beats are weak, and it sounds like he just compiled some old N'Sync songs (@FrigidArctic) and added in his admittance that his dad is famous. Which Tom Hanks is awesome. But his son would fit more into Jersey Shore (another abomination to American culture).
Hey Im an up and coming rapper called Sammy Laska from the suburbs of MN, check me out and lemme know what you think, please thumbs up my comment so i can get noticed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The video quality is great. I'm not going to hate on Chet if he wants to be a rapper okay then. Just has to keep working on it. He's very lucky for his connections and wealth.
i am a young rapper that wants to get some popularity. i would very much appreciate it if you would go on my channel and look at my raps. we have a breakout single that is coming out very soon called Hollywood by J-Dese thankyou for your time and remember to give your honest opinion on my new song, Just Life-Peytony, remember to subscribe and like!
I'm going to interject some rational sentiment here. I remember a couple years before Eminem came out with slim shady and mmlp people in studios used to laugh at him, discourage him and basically just rip him to shreds. This was mirrored in his home town on the streets where he would go to battles and open mics. He worked his ass off and proved everyone wrong. There is a great deal of improvement in Chets last 3 songs not only in lyrical content but in style and delivery.
@MrCaltec Eminem did not have the internet or a celebrity household drawing so much attention to his blunderings before he came into his own and Chet does. Making mistakes and learning and growing is part of the human process. ,That growth process for Chet will unfortunately be played out in the public thanks to Howard Stern.
@MrCaltec As someone who personally witnessed Eminem getting blasted by producers and established rappers in studios and later worked with him on the Grammy winning Marshal Mathers lp my advice to Chet would be, keep the lyrics true to yourself, don't act like someone your not and by all means keep at it if you love it. There is something here in my opinion. Not going to be easy for you. No one gets a pass in the music biz. Good luck.
I can chill or dance with this song. I find myself tappin my foot to it which says its got something. Only reason why everybody calls it trash is b/c he came from a family w/ money & fame. Don't blame him for what he was born into. At least he isn't scared to go out & do something he likes. Most people hide in there little corner & won't let anybody see what they can do. He wasn't ashamed to let everybody see it. I give him thumb's up for even trying.
@Jezzi5683 Well, not saying he is bad or anything , it's not my style for sure. I just don't think it sounds good , generic I guess. Sounds like so much other stuff except a lot of the other stuff sounds better.
Anyone who says this is good, must have just found out about hip-hop, and know nothing about TRUE LEGENDS like Tupac Shakur, Biggie, and, in my opinion, the best up and coming rapper, J.COLE!, WHAT HAPPENED TO REAL TALENT AND HIP-HOP!?
How can I say this without being a hater... Since rap has become what it is today, I can understand why things like this are considered to be that way. However, this is, and never will be, Hip-Hop.
what is this garbage??? i wouldnt listen to this again if someone payed me. youre tom habks son. i know you got money, pay someone yo write you better lyrics bro

Like the song Chet! I'm a 40 something Black woman from NYC where rap & hip-hop started..it's 2011 & Black people are no longer the only rap & hip-hop artists out there just like White people are no longer the only people who sing opera. The beauty about all art is that it transcends everything & truth be told we all know that today it's white males who buy & support most rap & hip-hop records any damn way. So stop hatin on a rich white boy people & spit your own damn rhymes!!!
LARRY CROWNE opens today. it's going to be the biggest flop of TOM HANKS' career. I can't help but think him worrying/crying about CHET took him out of his game, you know?
Wow, I'm a huge fan of Tom Hanks, but this made me sick. The sad thing is you can have 50 million people hate your music, but have 3 million like it... and you can make money.
Its funny because last week I happen to be listening to Stern bashing this kid and I thought it was hilarious. Then I see his name in news that this video/song is out today. The song is actually pretty decent, but his whole image actually makes me NOT want to listen to him. If he went with a preppy college kid vibe, i'd actually respect him and listen to his music. But his "gangster" rap is terrible, this is much more type of music he should be making...
I don't dislike it because he's Tom Hanks' son and doesn't have street cred. I love Tom Hanks. But "Chet" just doesn't have much to say or do as an artist. He is capable of rapping, sure, but he just isn't doing anything very interesting.
@1lovekillsslowly You're right. Lil Wayne isn't dropping knowledge, therefore by some factor that only exists in your mind Chet Haze is now a great rapper. What other people do has no bearing on this guy's lack of talent whatsoever. He still has nothing to say. Nowhere in my original post do I say all other rappers do have something to say. Good luck learning to read and discern things.
It honestly reminds me a helluva lot like the UK Dub tracks I listen to...Fruity Loops all that. I like it. Very cool...not straight rap, which I like.
any fucking body white or black wants to pick up a mic now. hip hop was about struggle, story telling, lyrics, wordplay and delivery. tom hanks son struggle? ye fucking right...story telling? garbage? hes trashhhhh
Sure must be nice to have a rich celebrity Daddy help you cut in line ahead of millions of struggling people who actually DO know what it's like to live in the streets with drugs and gangs, huh CHET?
EARN YOUR OWN FAME, YOU SPOILED ROTTEN RICHBOY FUCK!
1. Lets see some crowd reactions. We need to see some to help sell the fanfare.
2. We need to cut away to some sort of story or something else. This feels looped out and repetitive.
3. Any girls you can throw in would be helpful in connecting with your audience. Booty sells.
4. Maybe throw some more of your dads money away for epic "make it rain" effect. Love love love to see money blown on nothing! Please use Benjamins only.

Sure must be nice to have a rich celebrity Daddy help you cut in line ahead of millions of struggling people who actually DO know what it's like to live in the streets with drugs and gangs, huh CHET?

Notes from the network....
Thanks,
The Network
