I began watching this when I was about 2 years old when my uncle's didn't feel like playing with me. I loved it. And I still cry to this day every time I see/hear it. Not like, a tiny tear, like crying. Thank you, John Williams. Thank you so much. Thank you for composing a score for a movie that would get me through my teenage years, and bring me hope every time I see it.
I got chills and goosebumps at the same exact time as everyone starts clapping and says oh my god. I can't imagine what it must have felt like actually being there.
You know a piece of music is devinity incarnate when you could be in real happy mood and the music plays and instantly your tearing up. Or you could be in such grief stricken state, but the minute you hear a certain theme/song and the sun has risen in your heart.
@mexgangsta1 yeah people do not know anymore how to react. You are supposed to clap at the end of the song not during it. People need proper theater education.
@misterbearbe Sometimes the emotion is so strong that it exceeds the politeness! All these people found themselves immersed in their childhood instantly at the same time, without expecting!
They had the need to express this intense joy without thinking! And when I see the emotion that video causes to me, I think that if I would have been in that theater for real, I would 've react exactly the same that these people! Then cried of joy!!
@JessOnTheRun Some people, this "misterbearbe" especially, complained about the fact that to applaud in the middle of a "song" played by an orchestra isn't polite, you just don't do it when you're "educated", that's the rule in an orchestra representation. And I admit we see Mr Williams (or the conductor) turn to the public when they applaud like surprised and disturbed. But this time I excuse people's rudeness because it's a magic moment!
@difolk its not considered rude... its of an older tradition to wait until the end of a performance to show your appreciation as it might disturb the performance... but that is thing of the past, and especially with pop cultural music such as film music... and trust me, as a professional musician, we appreciate getting a "rock star's" acceptance... sure does beat the hell out of the snooty, conservative boring types that you have to put a mirror under their nose to see if they are alive.
Even though I was feeling in the beginning that the sound and video quality of this VID wasn't the best, when the audience reacted after they recognized the song- well that was just priceless
once I see huge paragraphs as comments on youtube its either 1. a massive argument about God/abortion/etc OR massive D Riders that go on and on about how this person is a God on Earth/is the greatest ever/blah blah blah. we all know john williams is a good composer lol... stfu please :D
I love that man's response when the flying theme bursts forth at 10 seconds: "OH MY GOD!" My sentiments exactly! If there is a God, it speaks through people like John Williams and Steven Spielberg. There is so much mindless spectacle out there pretending to represent something genuine. Then you hear this, or you see his films. There is such a deep love and humanity in music like this. It's wonderful that all these years later it still feels like I'm hearing it for the 1st time.
Im 18 and im pretty sure that still my favorite ride at the universal orlando resort. because i have memories form being 3 and 4 riding it. and the smell. the ride smells great. lol
I understand it's a magical moment when you realize what song they're playing, but honestly...audience, next time please applause at the END of the piece. so rude!!
Hahaha, you know you're in the presence of something (or someone) special when the applause welcoming a piece of music is enough to drown out an entire orchestra.
One of the most moving scores I've ever heard. Combined by the placement of the film scenes when this is played, brings a tear to your eye.
Does anyone remember the concert when E.T. waddles onstage when this is played and the audience goes into hysterics? I saw it on a TV news report not long after the movie opened.
certainly the greastest piece of music ever made , period. and thats comming from a 15yo who's peers are into rock music and rap music john is a living legend
OMG stelivo1, I know exactly how you feel. I'm 15, and no one understands how amazing John Williams is. The ET theme is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Gah. -dies-
its good to talk to another jw fan who's also 15, hes truely amazing and so is the movie :) also like the movie "knowing "soundtrack similar to jw's work but a little darker particular "caleb leaves" score by marco Beltrami. its also awesome movie like ET is
I'm 16. A total band geek and i totally understand how you and stelivo1 feels. John williams in like my inspiration for music. To know that if i'm good enough, maybe one day i'll get to play under his direction is the boost i need to practice!! Personally I prefer to listen to Gustav Holst. You might wanna check him out!
Hey, stelivo1,It's so great to hear kids like you say that. The media would have us believe kids today are all dim bulbs that only care about whatever crap MTV is pushing. True art like this makes the world better. These are not easy times for people that know how to be human.... how to FEEL! Sentimentality is considered lame. So be it. I KNOW magic exists when I hear music like this. So be sappy and sentimental! Perhaps you'll create art that moves people too. Peace.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN SEE HIM LIVE! He came out to the Baltimore area last Summer...I'm soooo mad that i missed him. He is by far my favorite composer...
I'm so grateful to have been a kid growing up with Spielberg movies and John Williams music. This was a big part of the soundtrack to my life. I'm thankful for the genius that I was exposed to. Jaws was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater. I was 4 years old. The music was awe inspiring and made me want to make music. I will always be in AWE of John Williams accomplishments.
OMFG! The first or atleast one of the first movies I saw was Jurassic Park. The music made me for life. Williams is a true genius and should be in the same line as Bach, Mozart, Ravel etc.
I don't get how John Williams comes up with these ideas for music? No other songs have been so famous as his from star wars, superman, indiana jones, harry potter, etc. Is there any other person as special as john williams who has such a creative mind and knows what will last in people's memories forever.
Well you do have a point. Steven Speilberg does always have good music along with his movies. Still John williams did other moves with Lucas for star wars, and jurrasic park.
Yes, there is always the component of luck and relations in success. But, if John Williams didn't have this awesome talent he would not have gone anywhere.
and I can't believe how amazing, perfect, unbelievable, the transition is in the beginning right into the ET theme song...I don't know if John Williams is better known for his works in composing these songs or how "mint" he makes the transitions. UNBELIEVABLE!
Oh wow, sends shivers through me every single time I hear this. Brilliant. It brings back fond memories of hearing my school orchestra (of which I was not part) playing this during assembly. Love it.
Star Wars theme, Superman theme, Indiana Jones theme, ET theme, Jurassic Park theme, Harry Potter theme, Jaws theme... John Williams makes the most memorable scores than every other composers could have done in their lifetime!! and there's a whole lot more of them than the ones I listed. Good point. I'm extremely fond of the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. Especially the music used in the last few minutes of the film and Yoda's theme. But this ET theme is very magical.

what's funny is that it takes him 10 seconds to realize it's the ET theme. Guess he only knew the popular climax.

I think the whole audience realized it at that point, haha.

haha! I love the geek that goes "oh my god!" On another note, this piece is fucking brilliant. Perhaps Williams best score?

This is william's best Theme. But I think Star Wars has the best score, there are so many great themes in Star Wars

Good point. I'm extremely fond of the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. Especially the music used in the last few minutes of the film and Yoda's theme. But this ET theme is very magical.
