It looks like he came out of the turn wide left of the runway then turned right to get back on the centerline. Anyone agree? He probably should have gone around.
For you guys dissing this pilot why don't you take a 747 and land it in this kind of crosswind than talk. I hate when people diss others for something they couldn't do in a million years.
Well, the pilot saved the aircraft, but this was hardly a good landing and he should have gone around. There is hardly any crosswind because the windsock is flopping down, and from the look of the approach, it appears the pilot either turned too late or didn't turn enough during the final right hand turn on Kai Tak runway 13.
ALL of the old timers I know who used to fly into Kai Tak all the time say this guy seriously screwed up and should have gone around. He did a really good job of compromising safety. But then again, just look at the paint job on the airplane, they have a long history of compromising safety.
Not only did he touch down way short of the threshold, but he was obviously waaayyyy behind the airplane. Also, he came very close to getting a strike on the #1 engine. An all around horrible pilot.
Hey, his a good pilot because he managed to land safely in heavy crosswinds without crashing. If he landed sideways like in the vid he might crash the plane, but he managed to use rudder to prevent the plane from crashing.
As a matter of fact, this video footage of this landing is installed on every computer in airbus and boeing office computers. It shows how a landing gear is supposed to be strong enough to withstand the weight of the whole plane and is shown to every landing gear engineer employee
infact that wasn't a good landing. you can find the full video, the pilot stuff up the intially approach but turning too late on final. so therefore adjustment is needed to line up on runway and i wonder if the crew been THINKING OF GOING AROUND...

why did he come in at that angel hes good in the sense he can land like that but there is a point to having different angles runways if theres strong winds and such. could he not have landed on another runway?
This is Kai Tak! There is only one landing strip which means 2 runways, but as most airports, traffic has to be in the same direction to prevent runway incursions.

This actually happened in an emergency landing aboard an Air Canada flight.. it was a 767.. don't remember the f#.. it was 26 years ago i think..
XxCAPTMitchxX 1 year ago
I think it was a 747, look t the top, you can see the second "floor" (sorry, I don't know the word for that)

@XxCAPTMitchxX ???? this wasnt an emergency...u confused me...

@thefsxandREALpilot
in this video, it looks like the pilot is "crossing the controls" to quickly lose altitude without gaining speed.
search "air canada gimli glider" and watch that episode. it's either air crash investigation or mayday

not to mention this is kai tak with an approach of around a mile which is really short for a b747.

Your right.. Bad landing. Pilots should have executed a missed approach. That almost ended up in a pod strike.
Buy hey.. "REAL MEN DON'T GO AROUND"

I belive that every landing is a good one if the plane is on the ground in one piece after it :)
