in 20 years Florida has gotten hit by Andrew Erin Georges Charley Frances Ivan Jeanne Dennis Katrina the most costlilest hurricane in history Rita and Wilma
I was 5 when this happend our mobile home survived this thing we had 4 trees down in our backyard none hit the house but we did lose power for a week and had to live in a hotel school didnt even open for 2 weeks so many memories i got really interested in hurricanes after this thank you for uploading this it brings you back
I was living in AL when this hit.. I was 10 yrs old it was crazy. We got a spin off tornado on it.. a tree went through our house..it was really bad I only remember it slightly..
I live in Crestview which is around 30 miles north of where it came in and it was bad. Try imagining two adults, a 13 year old and a dog in 1 small bathroom. We decide to evacuate Ivan nine years later because didn't want to go through that again. Well imagine three adults a dog in a small bathroom. At least the dog would have been slightly smaller. Now my uncle moved in and it would be four adults and one dog in a small bathroom if we don't evacuate next time.
I remember wathcing live that morning as it bombed to a cat 5 and every new report cantore reported had the pressure substantaially lower, probably still have it on tape. lol
1992 was actually fairly quiet with only 7 storms and only one significant hurricane - but that was Andrew. The next strongest hurricane that year was a Category 2 that remained mostly at sea.
And while we're at it, they kept talking about this hurricane over and over and over everytime there was a catagory 4, starting with georges and floyd.
This storm brings back memories for me from the year that I had first started getting interested in the weather. 1995 was a memorable Atlantic Hurricane Season. Thanks for this post.
The only problem with '95 being the first hurricane season I ever paid attention to, was it never occurred to me that this was a busy season until a couple of years later. So in '97, I was bored out of my mind because of the lack of activity. I remember I was watching Hurricane Erika like a hawk, even though it wasn't going to come close to hitting the US.
omg gonna have one like that on sunday o_O scared!!

Opal had the lowest central pressure for a hurricane that did not reach Category 5 status. That's a record that remains intact today.

Ahh the good old days of Weather Scope and Jim Cantore with hair.

Translation: Opal was forecast to hit New Orleans, but it missed Louisiana and hit Florida.

I remember this hurricane, too.
I was 5 years old & it got pretty bad at my house.
I wasn't really scared...just amazed.
I believe this is what really geared my interest in weather.

A 5-7 mile wide eye? Hurricane Wilma had an eye that was only TWO miles wide at one point!

1992 was the worst season of 20th Century. Hurricane Andrew showed Florida a new meaning a pain.

I got interested after Hurricane Dennis. 2005 is actually the MOST memorable season where it had 28 systems.
