While solar arrays generate typically 50-150W per kg. In space, weight is king. The only time RTG's are used is when the mission is too far from the sun, or too long for fuel cells.

However you're forgetting that not only are they contending with the daylit sun (which from Earth you can't see stars), but also the reflectivity of the Moon, which washes things out. @nasafakedit Solar storms and Cosmic Rays were known about then. It was a calculated risk that NASA and the brave astronauts took at the time. If you've read anything factual about the Apollo missions, you'd already know that.
The main issue here is concerned more with MARS missions, not LUNAR ones. A Mars Mission would leave Astronauts to fend against possible Solar Flare ups for months, nay, years at a time. (Counting stays on the Martian surface). That is a real concern.
They aren't very well understood, but to state they are not understood at all is false. In addition, like I said, it was a calculated risk. Something that they could afford to do with a Moon mission as the total duration is rather low. However for a longer duration mission (Re:Mars) the probability of having a major solar event goes up exponentially.

@nasafakedit NASA had previously calculated the odds of a catastrophic solar flare up to occur during at 11 day period (time of the original lunar missions). It was low enough that they went for it.

And yes, while there were detectable solar flares during the Apollo missions, there were no major Solar Flares during them. The closest call came on Apollo 12, in which external sensors picked up a Minor Flare, but the radiation internally was not any appreciable amount.

@Taimak77 It's a matter of watts of output per kilogram of weight. In those terms solar arrays are pretty much the winner. RTG's typically produce 5-20W of electricity for every kg of weight. While solar arrays generate typically 50-150W per kg. In space, weight is king. The only time RTG's are used is when the mission is too far from the sun, or too long for fuel cells.

However you're forgetting that not only are they contending with the daylit sun (which from Earth you can't see stars), but also the reflectivity of the Moon, which washes things out. Like a sunny day after it snows.

Similar things are of course seen even here on Earth in the "right" type of soil. I have the "original" photo in front of me right now. Printed before Internet and Photoshop existed.

@nasafakedit Solar storms and Cosmic Rays were known about then. It was a calculated risk that NASA and the brave astronauts took at the time. If you've read anything factual about the Apollo missions, you'd already know that.
The main issue here is concerned more with MARS missions, not LUNAR ones. A Mars Mission would leave Astronauts to fend against possible Solar Flare ups for months, nay, years at a time. (Counting stays on the Martian surface). That is a real concern.

They aren't very well understood, but to state they are not understood at all is false. In addition, like I said, it was a calculated risk. Something that they could afford to do with a Moon mission as the total duration is rather low. However for a longer duration mission (Re:Mars) the probability of having a major solar event goes up exponentially.

@nasafakedit NASA had previously calculated the odds of a catastrophic solar flare up to occur during at 11 day period (time of the original lunar missions). It was low enough that they went for it.
Being brave is not "proof" of anything, other than they took a risk. Feel free to actually research this topic if you so desire. If you'd like more history on this topic, let me know and I'll supply you with further information.

And yes, while there were detectable solar flares during the Apollo missions, there were no major Solar Flares during them. The closest call came on Apollo 12, in which external sensors picked up a Minor Flare, but the radiation internally was not any appreciable amount.

Grumman has built several of the most sturdy aircraft for carrier-operations during several decades, so I have no doubt they could build lunar landers who could withstand what they were designed to accomplish.

There You can find descriptions on the Russian LK, and the proposed tiny US landers Langley Light, Lighter and Lightest. After all: They should work in 1/6 gravity and vacuum, so they didn't need to withstand very heavy forces.
