  • not like him... he is unique

  • I NEED a full list of these songs!! If anyone can help, let me know!!!

    The Strayaway Child

    Farewell to Ireland/Farewell to Erin

    Jazzy piece???

    Bluegrass piece???

    Thank you!!!

  • This man and Alex DePue are in my opinion, the two most innovative violinists I'm aware of that are active today. Love it.

  • @Volunteers4awesome Look up Ed Alleyne Johnson. He has ripped the string quartet from it's chambre orchestral setting to the 21st century! His main video on youtube is "Awesome busker in Chester". it'll come up if you 'youtube' "ed alleyne johnson". wonderful mesmerising stuff!

  • @JackyRowe The man definitely does good music thanks for passing it along he's definitely the most entertaining electric violinist I've come across so far.

  • @Volunteers4awesome He actually did work with a band New Model Army, on the Thunder and Consolation album. Worth a listen!

  • and what is the last one? chikrug, once someone tells us, you should put it in the video description box, for other people to see :)

  • AWESOME MELODY. I'm listening to it for the first time and I have filling like I have listened to it many times. I hope I will listen to it over 100 times for today.

  • he's my new inspiration

  • absolutely gorgeous

  • he's incredible, just incredible. i have GOT to learm this!!

  • I want to be like him ^^

    hes a genius!!

and i love to play this kind of music :D

  • This is so gorgeous- it's pristine musicality! Some people may find his style controversial, but he's simply brilliant. Brilliant and unique, follows his emotions as an artist, hence a true artist! Gilles Apap's as true an artist as they come.

    5 (million) stars! *****

  • anybody know the name of this reel?

  • it's not the flogging reel, is it??

  • @carrottoponcrak The one at 1:50 is Farewell to Ireland (also known as Farewell to Erin). I don't know the other, Old-Timey one.

  • thanks a lot man. Very much appreciated. lol, wish i knew the first one, i like it a tad better

  • @carrottoponcrak

The first one's called the Strayaway child

  • Yes, amazing performance!!!!

  • just 2 words: an artist !!! could someone post his ciaccona I think its in a documentary but Im not sure -.-

  • Gilles use to be a classical violinist until my fiddle teacher introduced him to classical music. we can safely say that he hasn't ben the same since!

  • introduced him to irish music you say

  • I meant to say fiddle...... oh well. my mistake :)

  • just amazing... one man one piece of fashioned wood and four strings.. just freaking amazing

  • He is my friend...I have performed with him several times...what a blessing to this earth...he a very nice person, humble, funny and fantastic sense of humor..I miss him very much

  • Pretty much all classic violinists can fiddle but not all fiddlers can play classic music, because of the technical levels. HOWEVER, Giles Apap is a great musician and is awesome at combining the two. So I'm not hating on fiddlers.

  • I would disagree- of the many classical players I've heard, very few can play "alternative styles" with any degree of authenticity. That is changing, though, thanks to camps like Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp and others.

  • I very much so disagree with you and completely agree with fiddlercrab3. Classical music and fiddle music are two completely separate entities where the skills utilized are also completely different. Classical musicians may be able to read the fiddle sheet music, but they will not have nearly the same techniques that fiddlers do. I'm a violinist who grew up playing classical for many years and started fiddling and its taken a long time to be able to accomplish. they're very different.

  • oh well idk. im just basing it on personal experiences. maybe i just have a knack for fiddling :p

  • you can find all the skills used in fiddler music is classical music if you look int he right places. i dont find it that hard, i grew up around it and was forced to play it, i may hate it but i think its ten times easier than traditional music

  • An amazingly original musician and virtuoso, inspired and inspiring !

  • I usually listen to metal, but this is fuckin cool as hell, ill be checkin more of this guy out

  • I love Giles Apap. I used to live in Santa Barbars Ca. and saw him live. He is so cool. He used to play at nursing homes. Just go from room to room and play. I SB I saw him playing great music with a group called Giles Apap and the Mountain Boys. I had a recording but I lost it. His brother played with them as well. Does anyone have a recording of them,Or know how I can get one?

  • I have a CD, album is called "WHO?"

  • Perfect.

  • Jeśli można modlić się muzyką to Gilles to robi, i jeszcze przy tym tańczy z radością dziecka, które otrzymało pod choinkę skrzypce...

  • i love it!

    which music is he playing?

  • The Strayaway Child and Farewell to Ireland

  • His music s amazing....

  • I've played the Uilleann pipes with this man in concert, it was an incredible expirience, he's such a genuinely interesting bloke, great humour, and very welcoming. Absolute legend!!!

  • Wow, this guy can fiddle AND play Mozart! That is an uncommon combination and it is awsome!

  • deaf much? i hate fiddling but i can still hear him play it

  • leopoldauer makes a good point, but he makes it into his own style to where its unique and fun to listen too, which makes him the kind of artist he is now, an amazing artist

    :P

  • actually his fiddling is really good, especially this Irish stuff, and so is his violin playing. Mark O'Connor had him at his camps to teach; I think that says something

  • Wow, this is amazing. I agree, he's a genius, passionate musician.

  • I'm going to see him play with the BPO. I'm so excited. I was his roommate at a festival for a week and was one of the best times of my life. Can't wait to see what he comes up with at the concert and party after!

  • I'm envious of this. Enjoy your time, I know you will!

  • he's performing Berg concerto with Boston Philharmonic Orchestra this weekend.

we had rehearsal tonight, he sounded really really really great!!!!!!!!

  • So the tunes are

    The Strayaway Child

    Farewell to Erin (or Ireland?)

    and the last is...?

cuz That does not sound like any version of devil's dream i've ever heard... haha :)

  • i love how it begins. he's just sitting there like he could care less. i love it. this is THE MOST amazing thing i've ever heard. I know fiddle gets dissed quite a ton, i know i get a lot of crap for playing fiddle.. but this guy is like... the best thing ever.

  • What an artist!

  • i love it!

    5/5!

  • 3:20 whats thename of this tune-?

  • Someone has scores for the first tune strayaway child?

  • "this guy is a freakin' genius! breaking so many boundaries and traditions, although some people may find this offensive and unusual, we need more violinists like this today, to be able to be so creative, improvize and tap into so many different musical genres"

  • What is this guy's name?

  • Great encore...

  • Gilles Apap

  • thanks.super.extra.brawo

  • i know the first tune! but i dont remeber the name! its an irish tune! who knows the name?

  • Strayaway Child

  • Thank u:)

  • 1:55 farewell to ireland, im playing this irish tune

  • That has to be my favorite music on violin. the jig. It's just so lively and up beat. Even on a depressing day it picks me up. BY the way anybody know what the piece he is playing called or did he compose it himself?

    Thanks for the upload.

  • its not a single piece its a medley of irish tunes

  • I'm agree with partygehtimma. This guy is amazing, and love how he make sound the violin.

  • this man is so great!...i love how he plays! we need more of him!

  • very nice

  • gives me shivers

  • i love him

  • Cómo me gusta este hombre!

  • Scratch my last. According to Wikipedia, he's Algerian by way of France. I have no idea why I thought he was an American.

  • His style sounds like that of a native Irishman up until the end of Farewell to Eire. You don't find too many Americans who play like that.

Does anybody know the name of the Bluegrass tune? I've never heard it before.

  • me encanta..!

  • unico veramente!!! io adoro quest'uomo!!!

  • Finally, a real human being behind a violin.

  • I am not too sure I catch your drift, wisc.., but if you mean he is not the kind of soloist who plays very seriously, that is without humor, I do agree entirely. His skill is a lot more eclectic than, say, Midori's, and what he does is simply out of this world. I guess he can play anything better than most. A highly talented artist, and very subtle. Thanks for this vid, chikrug, and the other one too which is even more striking. 10 stars from me.

  • They mean he's not just a technical robot like many people seem to be these days - he has a soul too.

  • @wiscsnowlover that would be a stupid comment. what makes you think that classically trained traditional violinist are less "human" than he is? Itzhak Perlman, David Oistrakh, Gil Shaham, Joshua Bell...Gilies Apap is great, and he is a wonderful violin player, but stereotyping other violinists to be not human just because they don't HEAVILY experiment with country music and fiddle music is a very, very bad idea.

  • @hsl1993 Come on, you have to admit it -- Gilles Apap has a much more down-to-earth approach to performing than most other violinists. And though he may not be technically better than the violinists you mentioned (though he is by no means inferior, and is certainly better than Joshua Bell), he is much more entertaining.

  • wow

  • Sorry, first 4 minutes and 14 seconds are my favourites! ;)

  • Magnificent!

  • Very nice sir. I'd not heard the first piece, The Strayaway Child, which you play beautifully indeed: One can feel the music when u play it so.. This video reached me, inspired me to pick up a violin again, and play with feeling.

  • This man is a amazing person. There is incredible amounts of skill involed in learning any one style (genre) of music (i.e. classical or irish) but to do them both perfectly? Incredible, absolutely incredible, this guy's like my hero.

  • First 50 seconds are my favourite part!

  • The violin is a wonderful instrument. But it takes an extraordinary talent and imagination to make it truly magical, to take it to the next level. An example? Gilles Apap! The piece he's interpreting in this video is absolutely fabulous. It will haunt me for some time. Farewell to Ireland is a beautiful irish song, but Gilles makes it wonderful. Absolutely extraordinary!

  • the multi sytle skills of this man are my ultimate musical goal in life. Having the technical and musical ablility to switch styles and techniques like that is my dream

  • He kind of reinvents the genre for 'hardcore fans', while making it interesting for a completely new group of people, not only with his playing, but with his attitude

  • GENIUS.

  • this is really isnpiring

felling like going to play a reel right now

  • WOW!

  • Excellent!

  • woah, thats cool

  • lot of soul put in that violin, cool!

  • My new hero. re: also Mozart 3rd movement cadenza. As a classical and traditional musician, he just showed me you could do both in one setting. :)

  • THis man is my new hero. He gave me an entire new insight into music. It doesn't have to be conventional, it just has to be real. This guy is a really great violinist and musician.

  • Amazing.

  • Bu adam süper ya!!!

Daha önce Türkiye'ye de gelmiş Bursaya sanırım.

  • By God, man. Gorgeous, truly a musical spectacle to behold!

  • dear god

    that is unbelievable

    stunning, utterly stunning

now excuse me, i have to go practise...

  • haha i no thats exactly waht i was thinking i havent played my violin in forever im presently blowing the dust off the case =P

  • Süper bir usta Ellerine saglik...

  • mükemmele yakın

  • I understand why people might feel offended! A few years ago I would have been. I met Gilles Apap in Paris and we talked and played a bit together (I'm a violinist n pianist) nd he opened my mind! He is incredible, very simple, natural, original. He wnts to discover other technics, other playings, for example indian violin playing, or country, etc. Having our mind open to all of the cultures of our world MAKES our world, it keeps it together. And he's wright!

  • I agree with you! If we dont open our minds to new styles or culture we'll never progress.

I think this man is great!!

    n_n

  • you met him?! aah! im soo jealous!

  • this fellow is amazing :))

  • çok çok çok iyisin ..

  • why might some people find this offensive??

  • Cuz they think music has to be by-the-book and all the same old stuff.

  • ahhhh, tradition type thing. this guy looks so natural gr8 stuff. thanx for reply

  • Because they're art-fascists who want to see freedom crushed in the one human endeavor that has the potential to be truly free.

  • Mmmmmm-mmmmmm...yep...yep...thankyou for loving the violin, and everything it can do, like I do...

    It's that joy again...

    :-)))

  • It sounds Irish or Scottish!

  • smarter then smart

  • Which music is he playing?

  • I love his music. Really: A Genius

  • I love this man! He plays very good! Is a genious!!!!!

    Fantastic!

  • great work...

  • Great feeling. You play with empathy and brings music on higher levels. Great tecnics and skills. Whoever loves music should appreciate the freedom you play with. Its never stiff or slavic when u play!!!

  • Hey Gilles,

It cracks Peter and I up to see all the different com

ents about toi, but We know you're bitchin'!

We're both up now. Francine Feldmann, Peter Feldmann

    Grand Arroyo lives!

  • does anyone know whats the name of this song? I'm really interested in learning it myself... thanks!

  • he improvises most of his stuff

  • i love it!

  • I met him!! Hilarious guy - completely and refreshingly out of his mind.

  • I'm so jealous. its not even funny. I hear that he's french.. true?

  • Originally Algerian

  • Piç yaa :D mükemmel çalıyo

  • wheeeeeeejaaa.. muy country XD

  • AMAZING! GREAT! Doing what none of them walruses in those penguin suits sitting obediently on their chairs reading notes like machines ever thought of. Giving it to the fiddle like none has ever imagined possible. This guy is it. But I must say he's off a lot pinching me ears about 50% of times. That must be said!

  • It's kind of hard for cellos to break out of their chairs.

  • Check out Nat Smith, a cellist who plays with fiddler Natalie MacMaster among others.

Or Apocalyptica, the all-cello metal band.

  • I play the violin and I don't sound nearly as this guy on the fiddle/violin...

  • I read music with this guy in Santa Barbara. Very nice fellow.

  • I like Gilles! Such freedom of spirit and pleasure in making music just radiate from him!

  • Last tune is a bluegrass variation on Devil's dream. This guy has awesome style. Would love to hear more of his stuff. 2 Thumbs up!

  • Irish...first part is easy...variation on Glasgow reel. Irish fiddling is awesome! (I do Irish fiddling.)

  • A fun encore. His music and playing makes me smile!

  • why is he holding the violin so low, doesnt he know that weakens the tone?

  • Hang on? Are you listening? This guy's tone hardly needs improving. The guy is just beautiful listen to. I think he's past the point he really needs to worry.

  • becuase it could be better thats why

  • when your as good as apap is whatever is comfortable is what you do. and it works very well to play fiddle music without the violin on your shoulder. almost all in first position and unless youre shifting it doesnt matter where you hold the instrument.

  • Weakens the tone? Thats a matter of how youve learnt to play and what you are used to. And if you look again, he moves his violin a bit up and down also sideways. That can actually help you get the "real" tone. But this man plays whatever is most comfortable. Doesnt matter really how he holds his violin. He has a great tone.

  • So Irish...

  • Does anyone know what the name of the first song he plays is?

  • the Strayaway Child

  • All the genius had been called mad or clown, but someone that high skilled will be remembered in the future be sure of that. I love to see someone that really get fun playing his instrument. He is a genius.

  • Some people thinks that he's a motherfucker who crush classical music, some people thinks that he represents new and fresh winds in the musical environment....anyway he's a genius bravo bravo gilles!!

  • incredible !!! it's much more amazing live !

  • Never heard Irish music played so beautifully.

  • his technique is inhuman... amazing...

  • Just amazing...

  • yuru bea adamım sounds crazy and violinist perfect

  • whats the name of the first song he plays?

  • The last tune was an old-time fiddle tune, the middle tune was "Farewell to Erin" an irish reel

  • Does anyone know the name of the tune he plays at the end?

  • hand is so relaxed... he should jam with Robbie Lakatosh

  • Just amazing ! Like you said !

  • Great!!!!!! He plays that music with such a climate!!!!

  • A very interesting, unique, and cultural style. I LOVE IT!!

  • now this guy is incredible hes just made it into my list of great violinists.

  • Amazing. He is a real inspiration to me and many others I'm sure.

  • another guy that improvises and changes genres is Gideon Fruedmann, he's a cellist

    www.cellobop.com

  • Awesome passionate player!

  • Thanks so much for posting this... I agree with your statement though I would replace violinists w/ musicians

  • Show me another musician who spends more time playing, than a violinist. I dare you to learn to play mlunapiena1?

  • Whoah,man...
