@maccollectorZ na your confusing the term. The terminology of PC dates back to IBM and when Microsoft first licensed DOS to them, although MS kept the rights to the software and as such sold it to other manufactures as well. That is where the term IBM PC Compatible came from or more specifically PC as thats what IBM named their units. Apple computers at the time never ran DOS or windows and as such where branded differently, its the easiest way to differentiate between the two.
Does anyone Know what that apple mac monitor is called, i know its a stupid question, but i cant find one that looks like that one. so thought it might have a coded name. cheers.
Yes your right, sort of. The studio displays were 17" inch and 15" inch and the cinema displays were 20" and 23" By the looks of the ad, it is the 23" model.
power macG5 are more powerful and stronger than the mac pro they only have the intel chip which apple continue to developed software for ,Apple discontinue power pc because they want customers to buy thier newer model computers with intel chip mac pro and power mac G5 works similar
The PowerPC runs at 1.6 GHz to 2.7 GHz (Single, Dual, Quad). The cheapest model (1.6 GHz) is 1,999$ whereas the cheapest Macbook Pro with the Intel Proccesor runs at 2.3 GHz too approximately 6.6 GHz. The cheapest model for the MacBook Pro (2.3 GHz) is 1,199$ Which therefore means that the Macbook Pro is better and cheaper at the same time.
@beatrydermusic they work totally different to each other. PowerPC is RISC and intel is X86 Powerpc was the best once, but intel shot passed in around 2004/05 Apple saw this and thats why they switched because they couldn't see a future with Powerpc I own a lot of macs 4 of which are powerPC system they do an excellent job, but you can't compare a G5 not even a Quad to a brand new Mac Pro it just wouldn't be fair
@macnerd93 Well they switched because battery life would be a mere 1.5 hours. So they switched to Intel the same month P.A. Semiconductor had a solution to actually use less energy then a Core 2 Duo. It was because they needed to push it out quick. The reason new Mac Pros are faster are because they have more RAM and quicker RAM and they have much better drives, way better drives. That's why, nothing to do with the processors. Trust me been working with these for a third of my life.
@Justinba1010 as have I, been a mac user since 1998 with the 233Mhz iMAC g3 and PowerPC use to be faster by miles heck I own 9 macs four of which are PowerPC and they still do tasks amazingly well, but intel passed them by i'd say in about late 2004 and 2005. Main reason for the switch was Apple were unable to put the PowerPC 970 in a PowerBook due to cooling etc. I'm even intending to sell one of my 3 Mac minis and replace it with a 2.5Ghz Quad G5
@macnerd93 Amen! Lol, but I agree. The reason is Apple didn't want to pay 11.5 mil to buy the P.A. license, Intel was doing it for free. So they switched, P.A. Semiconductors had an underclocked and smaller, and it beat the Core 2 series in almost everything but lost energy by about ~1.7w. That's right everything but 2w. Anyway it was possible but Apple were acting as cheap bastards and blamed it on IBM.
@CaptainDarren82 oh and the Nintendo Wii has a IBM PowerPC G3 750GXe 1.2 GHz processor, and the PS3 is based on the POWER5 (not PowerPC g5) while the G5 is based on the 2001 IBM POWER4 processor.
@CaptainDarren82 well, both the XBOX 360 and PS3 share similar processors. MS went to IBM and asked for a fast processor for their 360. So IBM gave them a modified version of the Cell Broadband Engine, which is the processor which powers the PS3. And the PS3 uses 1 core for it's OS , 6 cores for the game and 1 main core for data processing.
@CaptainDarren82 as much as I would like to side with the G5, the Playstation 3 is based on the POWER5 processor while the G5 is based on the POWER4 processor, and the Playstation 3's processor has 9 cores but Sony restricted 8 cores to only be able to be used on multimedia processes. And the PS3 does 3.2 GHz.
No Power G5 processor is based on Dual Power G4 Processor and the PS3 is based on the Power G4 Processor and goes 2.44 GHz, while the Wii has a Power G4 and goes 2.0 GHz.
@86123maxxi I never did any extensive research on the PS3, but even though it could be true, I honestly have a hard time believing that a game system costing a mere $300 could have 8 cores and beat the PowerPC G5 Processor. Maybe it could, but I am in disbelief.
I'm picking up a Quad soon :). Im really excited. It's around 600 Dollars but has Quad G5 2.5 GHz CPU, 8GB RAM, 2 X 200 GB HDD'S, NVIDIA 7800GTX Graphics and the owner is including a boxed copy of Adobe CS3 Photoshop.
Are these things good for every day tasks? It wont be my main machine, I have a 27" iMac and 15" MacBook pro, both are i5's, but I have always liked the Powermac g5.
Can it handle Youtube, a few older Mac Games, and maybe some light bit Torrenting? Thanks
@macosftw I believe your computer would handle everything but I would consider getting a better GPU. The Nvidia 7800 GTX may not be able to handle all games on max graphics settings. But it is definately much better than most regular desktop GPUs. I have a ATI Radeon 5770 and it is amazing for everyday tasks but starting to get old for gaming (games like Crysis 2, Fable 3, Brink, etc). But it is able to handle all older games made in 2010.
@AdvancedGamer52439 PowerMac G5's can't support any better GPU than a 7800GTX. It's the PowerPC architecture. And I'm not talking about a gaming computer here, my iMac 27" Core i5 2.8 GHZ has an ATI 5750 1GB that works fine with most games in Win 7 Bootcamp.
@AdvancedGamer52439 My 8800GS is worse then yours. It can only handle 2010 games roughly.I tried to play NFS Hot Pursuit and it will be very laggy when there are many cars on the screen.
@AnotherNutJob Does your playstation hold x2 2T hard drives? Is it 64 bit? The Playstation only has between a 1.2-1.5GHz 32-Bit single core processor. My Power Mac G5 Has a Quad core 2.5GHz processor and 16Gigs of RAM. Maybe graphics could be close, but processors... no way. Try running photoshop on a Playstation, good luck getting it loaded in 50 years!
right great video from apple. BUT MY APPLE POWER MAC G5's LCD Screen Melted! and now it's dead, it's working but all you can see on the screen is black. what the hell?
I never thought that display matched the powermac G5. I think apple should've came out with the aluminum design at the same time they introduced that G5.
I felt like dying when I watched this ad. Why is it that only Apple can get away with ads like this? I mean how many ads can you name that attack other brands BY NAME?
So in other words? A USB Fan is connected to the PowerMac G5 and the fan gets that much power to blow him through 3 doors. Awesome! I loved the old Mac ads until now they get the adds for like showing a 360 view of the new iMac (not as fun as these). I loved that. Thanks!
