lets make a deal, we somehow managed to get 492 channel view by showing off other peoples cars and top fuelsers so if we hit 500 il make sure we give you a teaser of the hotrod and the dragster and altered too. and if we hit 600 i will show the 2000hp cuda sitting on the jig thats are backround that know has a set of 36 inch top fuel tires!!!!!
One of the things that car was best know for was the way it could cover the quarter mile... and most of the lane, (and sometimes, the whole track). Willie was always fun to watch, trying to control this beastie.
I have been involved in drag racing on and off for 50 years. Used to watch Willie drive this altered. I was standing on the starting line for this run at Pomona a few years ago and will never forget it. Words cannot describe it, TV and internet pale in comparison. Fuel Altereds Forever?? Damn Right!!
Along with the short wheelbase, the biggest reason these cars were so entertaining to watch, and scary to drive, was that they had full suspension under them... so that on the hit at the line the motor would go off... the frame would react, THEN the springs and stuff under the frame would react... the driver never really knew what to expect.
I was lucky enough to watch Wild Willy Borsch match race the Winged Express at Muncie in the very early 70's.....still the scariest machines ever to race !
Ask ANY of today's top-fuel dragster drivers if they would even THINK about driving their dragster if the wheelbase wha shortened down to what this thing is/was!! They'd faint at even the thought of it!
This car IS the best car on the planet....best sound, best looking and one driver with very big balls!....can anyone send a t-shirt or mousies autograph. They would be gold to me.....Big aussie fan!
I think the AA means over 500 cubic inches, or possibly over a certain cubic-inch-per-pound of car weight. In any case, NostalgiaT01 is correct. It was, and still is the absolute top classification in drag racing for the various car types. 'Fuel' means something else besides gasoline. 'Altered' means the engine is set back in relation to the wheelbase compared to where it's stock location of the engine was.
now THAT was a proper burnout! I saw this video years ago on a website called wediditforlove,dot,com... and that clip was in stereo... you could hear the car reversing closer before you could see it... still, a great video of a legendary car.
someone should talk to all the security gaurds cause when i was with mousies friend jake we were dropping my mom off at the car so she could leave and one of the security were higher then crap he didnt even know who we were but we finally remebered 8 hours later lol
Simply awesome.......the way it used to be....the way it should be. Makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Thanks for posting and bringing back many happy memories.
