I was there in 1984 as a volunteer road marshal. The race took place in Mission Viejo, California and the place was already buzzing with excitement at 7:00 AM with crowds and helicopters buzzing overhead. The women's road race started and I got a close-up look at the intense concentration on the competitors' faces as they went by. It felt awesome to be part of such a thrilling event. I live in the area and ride parts of the route everyday. There's a special marker where the finish line was.
the design of (womans bikes) with the cut away frame was made because woman often wore dress;s when they rode..this has been done away with now fr many years..you saw this is cheap brands...serious racing bikes are the same basic shape as the mens but woman specfic meaning they are much smaller than mens bikes..but the traditional diamond shape has now changed to sloping top tubing..
@gusfromflorida Bikes were first, motorbikes or motorcycles came later for lazy people. Now those lazy people are to lazy to say motorbiker.... or motorcyclist. Bikes do not have motors....
Wow, the battle of Twigg and Phinney. This is a wonderful reminder of the birth of Women's Road Racing Heroines, for the USA. VERY exciting! These were my heroes when I started racing Tri.

Why did the ladies use men's racing bikes? Won't that be a handicap, using a heavier bike? Thanks.

All women use bikes like that. The bikes are stronger and stiffer and not heavier than the bikes you are talking about.

Sorry, also a real comment (as a biker) this is cool. Seeing '1984' and 'olympics' makes me think of Daley Thompson... an early hero of mine. 5*

"Bikers" are motorcycle riders. "Cyclists" are bicycle riders.
