The song is about his mother. AND what religious assholes did whilst his mother was in a vegetative state. Judith Marie Keenan suffered a stroke and lived in that awful condition for roughly 27 years. All the while religious types were feeding Judith misinformation about her son and did their very best to drive a rift between the two despite the unconditional love James (Maynard) had for his mother. The song is about the conflict, and the fact that she didn't deserve what had happened to her.

I absolutely agree with the message here, both subliminally (and maybe not so much so, in some stanzas!) and otherwise. This song was indeed written for Maynard's mother, with whom he sometimes becomes angry with because of her blind faith. Hell, I feel the same way about many of my Christian friends and family. I love how Maynard can take this concept and so eloquently pose that burning question: "Why!?".

Stylistically totally different, but I put this with ZZ Top's Just Got Paid. This song is very strong, tight and relaxed. It's very difficult to combine these within one song. I guess it has to do with the musicians really complementing each other. Thus the name of the band. Plus the bass player is magma.

He isn't bashing religion in the song at all...he is questioning how his mother could still be faithful to Christ after she was in her accident, and it left her paralyzed from the waist down, hence the lyrics in the song "praise the one who left you broken down and paralyzed." Maynard's mother is a devout christian, and at the time he wrote this song he was extremely angry and very confused as to how her faith could be strengthened by her being injured so badly. Just some factual information.

A lot of people focus on the singer in a totally wrong way, they're like "this band is awesome and the lead singer is sooo cute".
