How much did it finally go for when it was sold. I wish more of these survived. I wish people kept making these things, they would be impressive to bring out at a party or in a theater setting
The magic part is simple, the mechanism extremely complex for the entire automaton. The assistant merely disappears when the back of the box rotates and allows a lever mechanism to move her backward, then the screen moves back into place. The "small" assistant is merely hidden in the base of the table until the appropriate time, when she rises up. A series of cams is used to "program" each movement of the magician.
i think i know what happens, the tall lady goes down from the box but there are mirrors underneath so you don't see it and the mini lady just comes up from under the tablecloth.
he should show the tall box empty after the lady vanishes, before she reappears in the cube. The second vanish could involve the cube falling apart rather than a door just opening (Yes, I know they're mechanical dolls)
my guess is that the full size doll standing was attached to the cover which it is lying on when he shows that the girl had dissapeared the cover turn the other way which means we are looking at the back of the cover as for the girl in the box the cover was actually on top of the doll's head which when appeared u can see a bit of paper sticking out if u watch carefully at the head of the doll which is in the doll the doll in the box actually was in the curtain below the box. thats what i think.
A magician never reveals his secrets ... not even a mechanical one ... psssst .. gears and pulleys and hiding places .... shhhh don't tell anyone ... enjoy.
you would have to see the device in 3 dimension to see where the dolls hide ... it is amazing ... stands about 5 feet tall on its base ... sold at auction in Oct for $70,000.
My guess would be, in terms of clockwork, that the base of the cupboard is actually a lazy susan with a wall seperating the two halves. I had a pop-up book once that did stuff like this, you'd turn the wheel and stuff would flit around, and then when you went to open the flaps again there would be one missing somehow. It was kinda fun, I wish I knew where it was.
The background music was created on the computer using generic beats, washes and flourishes with an added gong splash or two ... enjoy my tunes ... check out Dinosaur Rock or my others.
I don't know. His movements aren't nearly Gob Bluth enough for that. Plus, he doesn't sink anything or set anything on fire, and there are no pennies flying out of his sleeves. ;)
I thought it was appropriate. People are pretty shallow though, it's pretty bunk that they can't handle a simple techno song for not even a minute and a half.
Intel inside maybe?

Better than an x box

@jaimwah haha yes ^^ better. more interesting! ;)
Hyroar 1 year ago
@jaimwah Maybe an overstatement ;)
But having said that, this would be much more worth as an investment and conversation peice than something drab like an xbox.

Am I right?

i think your theory might be correct because notice how the light under the box turns off before he hits the gong

It's actually electric .. 5 foot tall ... made in the 1920s by Phalibois ...

Wow! I would have sworn it was stop-motion animation worthy of Ray Harryhausen.

How does it work? I can figure out the cube on the the left of the screen, but how does the doll appear and disappear from the cupboard.

Well, of course. But where does the doll hide?

Oh, so it drops down into the base. I see. Thanks!
felixshelton 3 years ago
actually ... it doesn't drop into the base ... the base is full of levers and gears and pulleys and other 1930s mechanisisms.
wexrex 3 years ago
so where does it go?
felixshelton 3 years ago
they are full size dolls and are in boxes large enough to hide them durng the sequence

It's actually electrical not clockwork.
wexrex 4 years ago
They make electric clocks! (Never mind, I know what you're saying.)
kiptw 4 years ago
you have it labeled mechanical, implying clockwork.

lol, but as a tribute to Gob, it clearly demonstrates that no mere human can do what he does, NO, Gob can only be replaced by a machine.
UncleBebby 4 years ago
Point taken, my friend. His astronomical illusionary skills can be matched by nothing but a machine.

Fascinating automaton, but seriously annoying music pretty much ruins the video.

Please feel free to turn your volume off to avoid Techno David Copperfield style magic show music ... we thought it was humorous.
