I did a lot of recordings with the Edirol R09, the Zoom H2 and the M-Audio Microtrack ii.
I hate to say this. But the absolute winner is the M-Audio. Better sound, quieter, and much less handling noise. I don't work for any of them, I'm just a musician. I would never accept lying even if they paid me a lot to do so. Sorry Roland, and sorry Zoom. But that is the truth.
Zoom H2 was better than the others...having the XY mic arrangement was what set it apart...no phase problems...Id love to Hear my Yamaha pocketrak CX in a comparason since it blows these away.
First of all, the video cam audio is an auto record level and is compressed resulting in greater bass response.
A very good free program for editing and making mp3's is called Audacity. Search for it.
I had a Tascam DR-1 (no longer available) which is probably very similar to the Tascam tested here. It had very good sound, better that what is evidenced in this test. I would think it is probably the best of the three and I, too, suspect that the levels are not set correctly.
moliba11 was right: edirol boxy and thin, last one sensitive and zoom 2 the fullest sound. I had one Zoom for a year and a half and it merely stopped functioning all of the sudden (I didn't drop it). I was told by the technician (as it was no more under warranty) that it would cost me at least 120 bucks to send it to the manufacturer and they could let me know a price that it would drop my jaw. He calculated me that I had it for 50 cents/day and that's it. Maybe I'll buy another one though.
Anyone have advice on a good MP3 program to use to partition tracks from Digital Recorders? Before I start the Google search was wondering if there are any free ones that are recommended Thanks
me too. vid cam mic sounded best, but I don't think the edi or the tascam had the input limits set properly. it sounded like there was peak distortion
i must be crazy but the sound of the video camera mic sounds the best by a long way. do not like the h2 much. tascam is worse, edirol is the best of the three. something is wrong here, i think the mic placement could be better. would not buy any of them if thats all i had to go on.
doing vocals in a quiet room or playing an insturment at low volume helps if you have it all the way down. there are 3 positions on the boom you can toggle. i only put it all the way up when we have a full band jamming at loud volumes in a garage.

Whatever was used at the start of the video was the best--full, open, no distortion.

@Ninthcircleworld
Audacity is an excellent free program. You will probably have to download the mp3 encoder that goes with it, too.

the H2 seems to be at an advantage with its 4 mic set up at getting a nice warm recording
the GT R1 is advertised as a guitar recorder and it does seem to be picking that up clearer
and on the R-09 there seems to be auto leveling going on as the drums are dipping in and out of that i hear.

notice his boom is all the way up on the gt-r1(which can be ideal) but if he would have brought it down he would have got a tighter sound.

What do you mean? - I own one and would find it helpful to have a tighter sound.
