Alright, it's official now. Hognose snakes are the cutest reptiles ever.

I'm a little curious how you got the little guy interested in non-rodent meals, or if this was a taste he acquired on his own, lol.

I have an 18-month female corn who eats small f/t mice, and I noticed that whenever we cook eggs she wakes up and starts smelling around to "hunt." I sliced an egg into quarters and gave her a piece with white and yolk, but she didn't see it as food. Makes this even more curious!

Are hognoses known for eating different things other than mice? That is the one thing keeping me from getting another snake. I have a boa and I wont be able to afford feeding another snake a mouse once a week. But I can afford feeding it a mouse every other week. So if I could feed it a minnow every other week that'd be great. I already know I can do that with garters... But idk.. I have garders in my yard, I'd rather keep something I dont get to see when I go outside.

Any Suggestions Anyone?

Buy frozen thawed mice in bulk from an online supplier, I get 25 rat pups for my rainbow boa and salmon boa for about £10 inc. postage, not that much really :)

I can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be able to digest it just fine. I don't think it'd be an ideal regular food source but I'd do it if I had a hognose. I have no snakes. I used to have reptiles for about 15 years growing up.

I know mice/rats and eggs are totally different things, but someone told me that snakes cant digest cooked meat. So therefore microwaving frozen rats and mice is not recommended, or dethawing in boiling/very hot water. is this true?

I would NEVER defrost my snakes food in the microwave! EVER! The best way to prepare a rat or mouse for feeding a snake is to let it defrost naturally at room temperature, then to warm its head with a hairdryer. This means your snake is more likely to strike directly at its head as they hunt using thermal sensing as well as sight and vibration and smell.

@BADTR1P I'm sure they CAN digest cooked meat, afterall, they can digest bone. I still don't recommend microwaving more than a few seconds, mainly because you don't want the rodent to be really hot, AND, I'm sure you lose nutrients with cooking. (plus, it is kind of gross to put a rat in your microwave. ;) We've done it a few times, though... just to jump-start the thawing process.

Great video and adorable snake! Hoggies are one of my favorites. I used to feed eggs to sav as a treat, but you've got to watch your herp's diet - they'll get incredibly fat with too much stuff like that, which brings on health problems and a potential early death. It is nice to spoil your kids every now and then, though. :)
