  • Soemtimes Hayden's trick plays cost us. In 1991 he tried a fake punt at our own 40 yard line when we had an 18-6 lead at home against Michigan. They snuffed it out and used the great field position to score a TD. That momentum shift cost us the game, a Big Ten Title and Rose Bowl and a shot at a national title. A poorly called exotic cost us an outright Big Ten title in 1990 as well. There is a lot to be said in favor of conservative play calling and not making mistakes. Ask Pete Caroll

  • @mongoose704 And let's not forget O'Keefe's decision to burn the clock and send the games into overtime against Ohio State in 2009 and Iowa State this year. I mean, come on. When you're on the road and you have time on the clock to try a hurry-up offense to get into position to get a field goal, you take that chance. Instead, we just give it to our running backs so they can run up the middle and lose half a yard. Whoopie.

  • Reiners reminded me of Jim McMahon - he wasn't afraid to take off and run with the ball, just like McMahon for the Bears.

  • Tim Dwight.........should have just played every single position. they should have cloned him and let him play everything. dude could do it all.

  • just mad cause purdue cant hang with iowa

  • I miss Hayden Fry and all those trick plays he used to run.

  • Wait, Iowa went for it on a fourth down, let alone a fourth and four!?!??!

Too bad our coaching staff now is so conservative they'd probably consider punting on a 3rd and 4. *sigh*

Through good and bad still gotta love Iowa

  • where have you been? we tried to go on fourth at michigan state twice, once to win the game

  • @jazzman2021 Ahh America's favorite gloom and doom catchword. Want to sway an argument, appeal to fear and say "conservative."

Our coaches don't take needless risks with play calling. They play by the percentages to give us the best chance at winning. That is why they won two Big Ten titles, took us to 5 New Years bowl games, won three, won a BCS Bowl game for the first time in 50 years and took us to 4 top ten finishes. All at a small school with virtually no recruiting base.

  • @mongoose704 The problem with Iowa's conservative playbook is that somehow Ferentz and Co., have this warped idea that their opponents will also play the percentages. The result? In the last two seasons, we have been fooled by 6 trick plays that were turning points that lost us games. That includes onside kicks from Minnesota in back-to-back years. A punt fake that lost the came against Wisconsin last year. Successful fake field goals this season by Penn State and Michigan State...

  • God I miss the old ESPN2 bottom line...

  • wasnt 1997 as u can c the qurterback wasnt drew brees

  • Yes it was. He didn't start the whole year that year, as you can see from this excerpt from his bio on Purdue's official athletic web site: "1997: Saw action in seven games (six of final eight) as backup to Billy Dicken ... completed 19 of 43 passes for 232 yards with one interception ... top efforts were 11 of 21 for 97 yards at Toledo on Sept. 6 and 4 of 9 for 78 yards at Indiana on Nov. 22. ".

  • i dont think brees started in 97, he was probably a freshmen

  • Gotta love Tavian Banks. Not only one of the best Iowa backs, but a great person. His knee injuries held him back from a good, and more importantly long, career.

Plus I give him extra points for being a soccer player :)
