maybe I'm crazy, but I really don't feel like this sounds any good at all. I like Ben Folds, but I hear him scooping up to pitches and missing piano notes all over the place? Does anyone else think this is really overrated?
@idunbin From the looks most of these comments, it seems apparent that no, no one else agrees with you. Sorry. Except that song1010 fellow below us. He agrees with you. There you are then. It's not a complete loss for you. Maybe the two of you can critically deconstruct emotionally charged art work together to find tiny, arbitrary flaws and then post about them on the internet. Sounds dandy.
@potsos I hardly think intonation is arbitrary in the world of music, but I'll give that dude a call and we'll bring everything wonderful down together!
@idunbin It's arbitrary because the medium is art, not because pitch doesn't matter. What matters is if you like what you hear. If you don't, no worries. But *why* doesn't matter because that is only important to you. In fact, it may only be apparent to you as well. Think of how two different people can look at a painting and one thinks it is a magnificent masterpiece and the other thinks it is worthless trash. When such chasms can exist, why bother examining the individual brush strokes?
Though I don't know how a version being played so close to the original should be better, I have to say, it's a very good cover, done with lots of love by Ben. And I love how he's embracing Elton's performance style, even though he's missing the essential gap between his front teeth. ;)
ben folds is incredible live. ive seen so many concerts where the band is just awful live compared to the CD and stuff. ben folds is just talented up the ass!
I love Ben Folds! My piano teacher just lent me his album and I just love his songs!! This is a great cover too! I'm attempting to learn it on the piano :S
Hilarious that he's got Elton John glasses on (in a good way)! It'd be hilarious if he came out in a Donald Duck suit one night to do this as an encore...
This song always makes me grin and gives me goosebumps - anytime my brother is down for a few days, even the opening notes to the song have us singing it at the top of our lungs all around the house.
Very good cover. I've been listening to this song recently. For some reason it reminds me of ghetto spots in backstreet Hollywood, police helicopters and smoking with sketchy(ish) characters.... Great times....
So if a homosexual sings a song it automatically makes it "queer"? What about films? Is Good Will Hunting "queer" because it was directed by Gus Van Sant? Or was Brokeback Mountain NOT homosexual in any way because it was directed by Ang Lee?
Benny is a hellofagood musician man.

This is an awesome cover. Elton John wins for the original writing and performing, but Ben Folds just does an awesome cover of this.

I love this song, but why does he do the wide open mouth thing? Did Elton used to do that or something?

Most people either love Ben Folds or just don't know about him. Well, of course ,that is, pre-Way to Normal and Chatroulette.
Regardless, this is amazing and Elton John's is amazing.
